Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Suspicion Falls on Rory Linden

Rory Linden looked at Sean Harrison.

The man didn’t move from his spot.

Lucy Shaw lowered her voice even more. "I don’t care what you’re thinking, but the police are definitely going to look for you. You need to hide and not drag me into this, understand? If the Harrington family finds out the baby isn’t Miles Harrison’s, they’ll make me get an abortion."

It was unclear what the person on the other end of the line said, but Lucy grew agitated. "Don’t you get it? Even if I love you, my family will go bankrupt if I don’t marry Miles. Do you want our child to be born drowning in debt? I..."

As Lucy spoke, her gaze drifted to the side, and only then did she see Rory Linden and Sean Harrison standing on the other side of the main entrance. Her expression instantly turned to one of terror.

She hadn’t noticed when Rory and Sean had gotten there.

They must have heard her entire conversation.

"My, my, my friend is going through a divorce. I, I was just comforting her..."

Lucy spun a lie that even she didn’t believe.

She wanted to run.

But she knew she couldn’t...

She wasn’t sure how much they had heard. If they realized someone she knew had hurt Miles, they would never let her off the hook...

"Yes, we didn’t catch what you were saying."

Sean Harrison squeezed Rory Linden’s hand and started walking toward the emergency room.

A doctor quickly drew his blood for some tests.

During the short wait for the results, Rory Linden asked in a low voice, "About what Lucy just said..."

"We didn’t hear anything. We don’t know anything." Sean Harrison looked at Rory’s confused face and said bluntly, "Personally, I don’t want any problems to arise in Miles’s relationship with her."

At least not in the short term.

"Because you paid for the engagement party?"

That was the first thing that came to Rory’s mind. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Miles and Lucy’s engagement party had been an incredibly grand affair. Almost every familiar face from the financial news had been in attendance.

Sean didn’t want to reveal too much of his selfish motives. "Miles has always been immature. With Lucy’s pregnancy, he’s clearly started to mature. A little more growth would be good for him. Besides, Miles’s injuries aren’t that serious."

"Then... we didn’t hear anything."

Rory didn’t care whose child was in Lucy’s belly anyway.

’Even if it’s not Miles’s, what does it have to do with me?’

As before, Sean Harrison was diagnosed with a viral cold.

Considering Sean had already been on an IV drip for three days, the doctor just prescribed some medication.

Back home, Rory Linden made sure Sean Harrison lay down, reminding him not to shower, to stay warm, and to take his medicine on time.

Once everything was settled, Rory was about to go get him a glass of water to put by the bed...

She had just started to get up when the man grabbed her hand. "Where are you going?"

"I’m going to get you a glass of water. What if you sweat a lot during the night and get thirsty?" Rory explained patiently.

Sean Harrison hesitated for a moment before letting go. "Okay."

When Rory returned with the glass of water, she saw Sean sitting up in bed, his gaze locked on the doorway.

He was waiting for her to come back.

She was suddenly reminded of what the man had said when he was pretending to be drunk: "For you, abandoning me is much easier than choosing me, isn’t it?"

’Although his original intention was to trick her into talking, was there a bit of truth hidden in those words?’

"Mr. Harrison..." Rory put down the glass of water. "Get some rest. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be in the guest room, so don’t worry."

Rory didn’t leave right away, though.

She stayed with him for a while before going back to her room to rest.

-

That night, the police confirmed that Miles Harrison’s car had been deliberately tampered with. They also quickly identified the saboteur through surveillance footage.

Andre Jennings.

They still needed to run a background check on this Andre Jennings.

While reviewing the surveillance footage, the police discovered that Rory Linden had also seen Andre Jennings as she passed through the parking lot. After spotting him, she had watched for a long time but hadn’t immediately tried to stop him.

The police learned about the relationship between Rory Linden and Miles Harrison from Evelyn Irving.

The next morning, just after she had finished her rounds, Rory was called in for questioning by the police.

The questions, naturally, were about Andre Jennings.

Rory simply recounted the time she had seen Andre helping Evelyn Irving carry something.

The police then asked why she hadn’t gone over to stop Andre at the time.

Rory stated, "I did want to go check on the situation, but I was all alone. For safety reasons, I didn’t approach. Instead, I chose to go home and tell Sean Harrison, who is Miles Harrison’s uncle."

The police asked a few more questions and then left.

Less than half an hour after the police departed, Evelyn Irving showed up at her office.

Evelyn Irving asked directly, "Rory, tell me the truth. That day at the hospital when you saw Andre Jennings and me, why did you suddenly insist on accompanying me upstairs? Did you already know this Andre Jennings?"

"I don’t know him."

Rory denied it immediately.

She had never crossed paths with Andre Jennings.

"Really?" Doubt was written all over Evelyn Irving’s face. "You never wanted anything to do with us before, but that day you suddenly insisted on walking us upstairs... Was there a reason for that?"

Miles had suddenly gotten into an accident, and an Andre Jennings had appeared out of nowhere.

Now, Evelyn Irving viewed every outsider with suspicion.

But she had only seen Andre once, and on that very day, she had not only run into Rory, but Rory had also, completely out of character, insisted on walking them upstairs.

Evelyn grew increasingly convinced that the relationship between Rory and Andre was unusual.

Rory Linden looked at Evelyn Irving quietly and asked point-blank, "Auntie Irving, are you suspecting that I hired someone to tamper with Young Master Harrison’s car?"

"Don’t overthink it. It’s just that Miles doesn’t really have any enemies. If he’s done anything wrong recently, it was breaking your heart a while ago."

Evelyn Irving neither confirmed nor denied it.

She was clearly suspecting her.

"Auntie Irving, I never even cared about that. No matter what, the Harrington Family has been very good to me over the years. They fed me, clothed me, and paid for my education. No matter how Young Master Harrison treated me, I don’t blame him." Rory found it laughable. "I can’t believe that in your search for a suspect, you’d actually end up at my door."

"Rory, do you have any leads, then? Miles also said he hasn’t offended anyone."

Evelyn Irving’s attitude was still relatively polite.

It wasn’t out of old affection, but because of Rory’s unusual relationship with Sean Harrison.

"I don’t."

Rory was not happy.

She really wanted to just tell her about Andre Jennings and Lucy Shaw.

But Sean Harrison had told her not to, so she could only pretend she didn’t know.

"Alright then, I won’t disturb your work."

Seeing that she was unwilling to talk, Evelyn didn’t linger.

She returned to Miles Harrison’s hospital room.

Miles had woken up early that morning. Aside from a broken rib, he also had a mild concussion.

Lucy Shaw was in the room as well.

Ever since Evelyn Irving had gone to find Rory, Lucy had been on pins and needles.

It wasn’t until Evelyn returned and she learned that Rory hadn’t mentioned her relationship with Andre that Lucy could finally breathe a small sigh of relief.

Miles spoke up. "I don’t think Rory could do something like this."

"Stop defending her. The more I think about it, the stranger her behavior was that day. It couldn’t have been anyone but her!"

Evelyn Irving’s mind was already stuck in a dead end.

She was convinced that Rory Linden was the one who had instructed Andre Jennings to hurt Miles Harrison!

Although she had once been fond of Rory, her son was her life.

If anyone dared to hurt Miles, she would make them pay!

Evelyn Irving sat there thinking for a moment, then took out her phone. "I’m going to call your uncle. Your uncle must know something. As long as he doesn’t cover for Rory Linden, she won’t have anyone to back her up!"
