Chapter 130: Chapter 130: "Your Husband Is a Bigger Bastard Than Me.

The girl was only about four feet tall and didn’t look very old.

Rory Linden squatted down and took the little girl’s hand. "Slow down," she said. "What’s wrong with your sister?"

The girl looked at Rory Linden, then carefully asked, "Are you the doctors who came to the village?"

"We are."

Rory Linden nodded firmly.

The girl licked her lips before speaking. "Yes... my sister told me to come find you in secret. She’s having a baby, but she can’t... she has to kneel to give birth, and then... and then..."

The little girl spoke in fits and starts, apparently unable to clearly describe what was happening.

Rory Linden looked at Evan Hollis, who also shook his head.

Evan Hollis squatted down as well, pulling a piece of candy from his pocket and handing it to the little girl. "Take your time. What’s going on?"

"It’s just... My sister’s baby won’t come out, and her mother-in-law won’t let her... so my sister is kneeling..." The little girl’s voice grew more frantic. "That’s why my sister sent me to find you! She said you could help."

Rory Linden and Evan Hollis had planned to get a clearer picture of the situation and gather the necessary supplies before going.

But now, it seemed they had no choice but to head over immediately.

The two of them prepared to run over with the little girl.

As they passed a house, the little girl suddenly stopped, turned, and asked Evan Hollis, "Mister, do you know how to ride a bike?"

Evan Hollis nodded.

The girl ran to the house, and a moment later, the owner came out and lent them a bicycle.

Evan Hollis pedaled while Rory Linden and the little girl headed with him toward her home.

Henry Lancaster, getting restless in his room, decided to go out for a walk.

Just as he stepped outside, he saw Evan Hollis in the distance, riding a bicycle with Rory Linden on the back seat, holding a little girl in pigtails.

Henry Lancaster quickly pulled out his phone and snapped a photo of the touching scene.

He sent it to Sean Harrison.

The caption read: "Whoops, snapped a pic of a family of three."

Sean Harrison’s call came almost instantly.

"What’s going on?"

The man’s tone was clearly sour.

"No idea. I just stepped outside and saw it. Looked so heartwarming I had to snap a pic." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Henry Lancaster didn’t really understand what was happening either.

The two of them riding a bike together was one thing, but where had the little girl popped out from?

The girl had an oval face and big, round eyes. She actually looked a bit like Rory Linden.

Henry Lancaster couldn’t stop his smart mouth and added, "Maybe our sister-in-law really does have a kid."

"Henry, about the fees for using our company’s tech for free all these years..."

"I’m kidding, I’m kidding! Our sister-in-law is completely devoted to her studies and career. How could she possibly have a kid?"

Henry Lancaster immediately backed down.

Sean Harrison knew the three of them must be on their way to a patient’s house.

He got down to business. "Did you find out anything over there?"

If it weren’t for that threat, Henry Lancaster would have definitely tattled that Rory Linden was defending Evan Hollis and wouldn’t let him ask anything.

Now, he didn’t dare.

"Not yet. But give me a few days to get friendly with everyone, and I’ll try to get some drinks with them. See if I can get them to loosen up and talk."

Henry Lancaster had brought plenty of alcohol for this trip.

He had it all—spirits, beer, and baijiu.

More than enough to go around.

After Sean Harrison grew suspicious of Evan Hollis, he’d had someone run a background check on him.

Nothing had turned up.

He also compared Evan to the blurry figure from that surveillance footage.

There was a definite resemblance.

Henry Lancaster was one of Sean Harrison’s guys. Since the boss was suspicious, he naturally had to come along.

Based on his years of experience dealing with people,

he could tell that Evan Hollis was not the sweet, simple guy he appeared to be.

Meanwhile, Evan Hollis and Rory Linden arrived at the little girl’s house.

It was only then that they understood the situation.

The older sister had a breech baby and couldn’t have a natural delivery.

Her husband’s family believed that babies born naturally were smarter and that kneeling could turn a breech baby.

Even though the woman was full-term—forty-two weeks along, in fact—her in-laws refused to take her to the hospital for a C-section.

The woman’s husband and father-in-law were both working out of town.

Only she and her mother-in-law were home.

When Rory Linden arrived, the older sister was kneeling in a corner of the bedroom.

Despite being forty-two weeks pregnant, from the back she looked as if she weren’t pregnant at all.

She was pitifully thin.

Rory Linden tried to reason with the mother-in-law for a long time.

But the mother-in-law just kept repeating the same thing: "Other women give birth just fine. Why is she any different? Who’s she putting on this delicate act for? Besides, it’s just a worthless girl in there anyway."

The pregnant woman knelt on the floor, wiping her tears, not daring to say a single word.

Rory Linden had a million things she wanted to say.

But her two medical outreach trips had taught her that some people’s beliefs were so deeply ingrained that a single incident or a few words could never change them.

Rory Linden glanced at the young woman’s back before saying, "Who said she’s having a daughter? She’s having a son. If your son finds out that you killed *his* son, he will never forgive you."

Her words hit the small room like a silent earthquake.

All eyes turned to her.

The mother-in-law was skeptical. "Don’t give me that. I had a fortune-teller look into it. It’s a worthless girl."

"I have a doctorate from Celestria Medical University and interned in the OB-GYN department at the best hospital in Veridia. Hundreds of pregnant women pass through there every day. I’ve seen more pregnant women than that fortune-teller has hairs on his head, and I guarantee you, she is carrying a son!"

Rory Linden had indeed interned in an OB-GYN department.

But she had no ability to determine the sex of a fetus just by looking at the mother.

She was just trying to save the woman’s life.

’Of course, she could just take the woman for a C-section right now.’

’But what would happen after?’

’The fact that she could be pushed this far meant she had no family of her own to back her up.’

’She had just taken a closer look at the expectant mother. Despite being about to have a child, her face still held a trace of childishness. She had likely just barely reached adulthood.’

The mother-in-law was clearly flustered.

Evan Hollis quickly backed her up. "That’s right. Dr. Linden is our best doctor. Hospitals were fighting over her. What she says has to be true."

It was a classic case of an expert from out of town being more persuasive.

In the end, the mother-in-law agreed to let her daughter-in-law have a C-section.

However, the village clinic wasn’t equipped for the surgery. The closest option was the county hospital.

Rory Linden immediately thought of someone—

Henry Lancaster.

She rode the bike back to the guesthouse alone to find Henry Lancaster, asking to borrow his car to take the woman to the county hospital for a C-section.

He had driven an SUV.

After a quick headcount, he realized he would have to be the one to drive them.

He drove the car to the woman’s front door.

Rory Linden got out to help the pregnant woman into the vehicle.

Henry Lancaster stood nearby, his eyes narrowed as he carefully looked the young woman over. "Your husband is an even bigger piece of shit than I am," he said bluntly. "How old even are you? Letting you get pregnant this young."

The mother-in-law fumed. "This is the age we get married and have children around here! Wait too long and no one will want you!"

Henry Lancaster leaned against his car and scoffed. "Being unwanted sounds a hell of a lot better than marrying into a family that would torture someone just to save a few bucks on a C-section."

The mother-in-law, of course, couldn’t admit it was about the money. "Babies born naturally are smarter!"

Henry Lancaster let out a laugh. "With the kind of brains your family has, I doubt even a miracle could make this kid a genius."

The young woman got into the car.

The car Henry Lancaster had brought was his prized possession, a Cullinan.

It was even custom-fitted with a starlight headliner.

The mother-in-law had been about to retort, but when she looked up and saw the car’s luxurious interior, all the resentment on her face vanished.

Replaced by a fawning expression.
