Chapter 6: Ruined Awakening

The one who awakened was a young man with striking features.

Golden hair, golden eyes; though lanky, he was also especially tall, standing at about 1.9 meters.

He also stood there in disbelief as if he himself was unable to believe his own result, looking at his own hands, which were covered in golden runes.

White’s eyes narrowed, looking at the altar, and he noticed how each of the instructors stretched out their hands towards the boy.

This was it.

If all the instructors stretched their hands towards you, it showed they were willing to accept you, but they wouldn’t speak to you or try to pitch to you.

Ultimately, the choice was left to you, and in the end, White watched as the boy chose the hands of one of the MutantGnomes’ officials.

’A smart choice.’

The boy had awakened with Physically Enhanced S-rank abilities.

Everyone knew MutantGnomes specialized only in Physically Enhanced, so it was the best choice he could make.

He was allowed to return to his seat, which, thankfully, wasn’t that far off for White.

The Ceremony continued, and after the uproar of an S-rank Awakening quelled a bit, White moved.

A Physically Enhanced S-rank ability.

Even if he had no idea what that ability really did, he knew for sure it was better than the B-ranked ability he had awakened in his past.

And since it was physically enhanced, it was even more perfect for him.

There were a couple of adults standing around, clapping for their kids, and through them, White was able to weave his way quietly towards the boy’s back.

When he reached just behind him, two seats away.

He quietly ordered.

’Activate Awakening Copy.’

In that moment, his hands glowed blue, a bizarre rune of an abyssal maw appearing, and he stepped down.

The first step, the second step, and the boy’s row.

The boy seemed to notice him, turning to look at him, and White, putting on his best complimentary smile, spoke.

"Hey, you did quite amazing down there. Congratulations..."

He spoke, reaching out his hands

"Aw, thanks, man, I really appreciate it..."

The boy replied with a beaming smile, his excitement yet to quell, as he stretched out his hands to take White’s handshake.

’Got it!’

White said to himself as his hand quietly closed around the boy’s.

BAAAAANG!

Suddenly, a body came tumbling down, slamming against both of their hands before White could close his grip.

"So...rr...y."

The words were spoken in slow yet fast motion, and White’s eyes widened in both horror and fear as the hands of the person falling hurriedly yanked at his, grabbing him and pulling him down with the weight of her fallen body.

With eyes wide in shock, he was dragged down along with her, both of them tumbling down a couple of rows in the stadium, before White managed to quickly reach his second hand out, amid the fall, grabbing a metallic pillar.

His pause naturally brought about her pause, and it allowed White’s horror to sink in.

His hands, which were still glowing with lingering blue, were grabbed firmly by hers, and he watched the panel appear at the corner of his vision.

[Ability Copy triggered!]

’No. No. No. No. No. NOOOO!’

White screamed in his head, yanking his hands off forcefully.

She had been able to stabilize herself before then, as she spoke

"I’m sorry. I’m so sorry."

She turned to the side, trying to leave, but White’s hands reached out in anger, grabbing at her shoulder and dragging her back.

"What the hell is wrong with you!"

He roared, turning her to him.

His forceful yank opened the hoodie she was wearing, revealing a face that could make a man lose his breath.

A face as white as ice, eyelashes white, and her irises were a bizarre deep blue. Her long white hair spilled all over as the hoodie fell.

She might be beautiful, in fact, beyond gorgeous, but not to White, who felt his soul on fire.

His chance.

She had ruined his only chance of awakening.

"They want me..."

She whispered as she scrambled for her hoodie.

"Them...they want me!"

She whispered to him once more, turning to the side, and White for a moment paused, following her gaze.

What he saw made his heart begin pounding loudly.

It was a group of three, standing at the far edge of the hall.

Their features were completely hidden behind pitch-dark robes, and what White could not believe was that it was like they didn’t exist.

People were walking past them, weaving through their bodies... like stepping right into them and coming out the other side, yet no one noticed them at all.

"What the!?"

He asked, taking his hands back to rub his eyes and opening them once more.

When he did...they were gone.

"You can’t see them.... You shouldn’t be able to see them!"

The girl spoke to him as she slowly backed off from him in fear.

"Who are they?"

He asked the last question he should have been asking right now.

"If you can see them...they’re coming for you. They’ll take you too."

She said, and with that, turned her back, disappearing down.

White felt lost for words.

He looked back at the place he had seen those people, and there was still nothing.

’It could be an illusion.’

He turned to his panel, where a flashing notification was visible.

[Ability Copy Pending.]

[You Touched One on the Precipice of Awakening.]

[You Will Awaken Only When They Have.]

It said, and White immediately snapped back to look around.

He found her quickly since she was wearing a black robe.

She seemed to be reaching for the altar too, and he quickly followed, stepping on top, just as she did.

They, along with one other guy, stood before the three orbs.

The guy touched first, activating a D-grade ability.

Disappointment in his eyes as none of the instructors raised their hands to him.

He stepped down, leaving only White and the hooded girl, who had yet to move.

A couple of students came forward to take their place, but one of the Celestial-looking ladies, an official of the XtremeCybers, raised her hand, stopping them.

"You two..."

She spoke to both White and the hooded girl he had touched.

"Place your Hands on the Orbs."
