Chapter 323: A visit to a mountain.

Mei Mei pinched and stretched the little fox that was sitting on her bed. It felt real, just as it had felt ten minutes ago when it first appeared. She pried its mouth open and looked at the sharp baby canines.

After that inspection, she flipped it over to look between its legs and the little fox closed them tightly.

"What are you doing? Are you trying to harass me?"

Mei Mei sneered, "Why would I harass I a fox?"

"You like younger men, I am a younger fox." C4 replied.

Mei Mei slapped it on the butt. "We are not from the same species you red colored mutt. First explain to me why you have a real fox body? How is this possible?"

She looked into its eyes and for a moment, she was reminded of her mother’s fox that was named T4. Not just it but her mother’s black cat named Smarty pants which always managed to disappear from home and return months later looking like it was from a vacation.

That cat had more than nine lives because it had survived death more than nine times. Thinking of Smarty pants made her wonder where the cat was now. Was it still alive?

She looked at C4 closely, frowning. "What are you?"

"The universe is a mysterious place. Don’t ask questions that I am unwilling to answer. Put the egg in the pod first and prepare for your next mission."

Mei Mei was about to reach out and grab the fox’s tail but she paused when she heard what it said. She had just finished one mission, why was another one assigned already? Was it another egg?

[Mission: Two lost national treasures have been detected in the Hongduan mountain. They must be retrieved urgently. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Reward: A walk in fridge from another world which will put a smile on Mingzhu and Jingzhe’s faces and 20,000 points.

Failure: Lose your senses for a month.]

Mei Mei looked at the time. It was coming to 5:00 p.m. As much as she wanted to stay and listen to Mingzhu recounting her zoo adventures, the mission was marked urgent and the punishment was not something she could afford.

She took a quick shower and went downstairs. Mingzhu and the others had not yet returned. "Mama Su, when the others come home, tell them that I have a meeting in another city and I will be back in the morning."

Mei Mei also left a note on the fridge and she sent texts to Mingzhu and Jingzhe. Then she drove to the private airstrip owned by Kite Air and borrowed Mingzhu’s new private plane.

She was a trained and certified pilot but C4 controlled the plane, allowing her to get two hours of sleep. When she opened her eyes, the plane had landed on a grassland near the mountain.

Before getting off the plane, she changed into a hiking friendly outfit and the gravity boots. All the other things she would need went into the system space or her backpack.

She put a sweet cube in her mouth and got off the plane. C4 made it invisible and then Mei Mei started her hike. The Hongduan Mountain was no place for amateur hikers. It had rocks and ridges that sliced like blades or dragon horns. From morning to noon, the mountain was cloaked in mist and whispers of supernatural creatures.

Locals in Hongduan town told tales of ancient tombs buried in the mountain. Some were supposedly sealed by monks who cursed them, others belonged to ancient heroic generals. In one tale, one of the biggest traitors in the empire had been buried in a landslide somewhere around the mountain when he was burying his stolen treasures.

There were rumors of artifacts sealed within caves or buried in the ground--artifacts that could change fate, bend will, summon rain or turn one into an immortal.

Hongduan town thrived on these ghost tales and tourism was big in the area. So many people were searching for immortality or treasure.

Mei Mei did not believe in ghosts and now that she had a system, she believed in science and technology more than ever.

"C4, scan ahead for trouble. I don’t want to be mauled by something here."

She was focused on the path she was taking but also keeping her eyes on the virtual screen where the system was sending a map of the mountain, highlighting the most dangerous areas.

As with most mountains, Hongduan was covered by trees all around. She could the rustling of there leaves as the wind caressed them. Cicadas chirped in harmony like they were inviting her deeper into the mountain. Occasionally, she heard sounds that were similar to ghost wails.

In the distance, she could hear bells and see smoke rising. She was alone where she was, but she was not alone on the mountain.

"Would you like me to recite some poetry as we move?" C4 asked her. "Something related to nature."

Mei Mei actually found the quiet peaceful but some poetry to accompany her on the solitary journey was welcomed. She had nothing to do anyway.

"Wow me." She said.

"In the jagged plane, where the mist is born,

And the pines lean close to hear,

A woman climbs with silent breath,

Past stone and root and fear."

Mei frowned. "A woman, really! Is it me you speak of in this poem? After all, I am the the only one climbing a jagged plane right now?"

"Why must you find out where the inspiration comes from? Just listen to the poem." It replied.

"Okay." She replied. "Go on oh drunk poetry master C4 Bai. Dazzle me with your skill."

"Her boots press into ancient soil,

Where emperors once tread,

And every gust of mountain wind,

Whispers of the dead."

"Seriously!!" She cut in with an eye roll. "I am in the supernatural center of the empire, climbing a dangerous mountain at night and you choose whispers of the dead!!."

The system huffed. "You are ruining my poem by jumping in as you please."

"Then come up with something more inspirational or simply read me poetry that already exists."

The system huffed again. But the little temper tantrum lasted no more than a few seconds. It played a slow heart tugging melody in the background and started a new poem.

"I called your name into the mist,

But the jagged mountain swallowed sound.

The ancient soil drunk my blood,

The dragon’s spines marked my palms.

The echo came, but not your voice,

Just silence wrapped around."

A smile tugged at Mei Mei’s lips. "Now that was inspirational."
