Chapter 305: The funeral on a rainy day.

The mighty little peepstar: [Funerals are places where the secrets of the dead are revealed.

Like the secret of late Empress Hui. In an interview, she lied publicly about her favorite color.

It was no white, she favored green!!

It is not related to the fact that many consider green to be the color of jealousy.

It is a fact however, that Empress Hui was a jealous woman and she once ordered the feathers of one of her swans to be plucked off after it out shined her at one of her parties.

If you don’t believe me, ask Princess Chi Lian. She was a witness to the incident.

May she rest in peace or feathers.]

The weather surprised everyone on the morning of the funeral. Sudden rain visited the empire as if it had come to bid the Empress farewell. It started soaking the earth as early as 4:00 a.m, and showed no signs of stopping as those that would witness the final journey of the Empress made their way to the Buddhist temple which sat atop a hill.

The Empress’s body, dressed in royal white robes was placed in a glass casket under Bodhi trees, besides a stream of water. A string of wooden beads had been placed in her hands. Other than that, she was not to be buried with any jewelry.

The dignitaries and nobles whose motorcades lined up the road up the mountain like winding serpents stood in the open, under umbrellas. They were silent, with somber expressions on their faces. Those without coats shivered but refused to show signs of being affected by the cold.

Near the casket, the Empress Mother lit some incense, wishing the Empress farewell.

In the large crowd, whispers were not absent. Some were discussing the death and others were discussing the casket. Most were whispering about the peepstar’s post or the past of the Empress. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"She died under suspicious circumstances, the Americans are denying all involvement in her death. Someone claimed it was an inside job."

"The most unloved Empress of our empire died just after whispers of the Emperor possibly taking another wife started to rise. Doesn’t that strike anyone as... convenient?"

Lady An Anju leaned towards Chi Lian who had just thrown a candy into her mouth. "Did she really do such a terrible thing to the swan?"

Chi Lain almost laughed. She stopped herself only because the venue was inconvenient. "She did. And it was done in her presence. The cries of that poor bird were so heartbreaking. I had a royal agent sneak it away later and I nursed it back to health. It still lives in my home to my date but whenever it sees an image of the dead Empress, it goes crazy."

Lady Anju gasped. "On top of everything she was very cruel to animals. I wonder what other secrets she hid beneath her crown and sinister smile."

Ten feet away from them, Ambassador Phakphum from the Kingdom of Thailand scratched his hand and scowled, wondering what insect had just bitten him and why the funeral had to be outdoors.

His aide whispered to him, "Prince Long Feng would like to have a word after the funeral. He is the new Minister for Finance so we should give him priority if we hope to achieve some of our goals for coming."

The Ambassador nodded. He looked at the other dignitaries and wondered how many had come with other goals like him.

The answer was all of them. This was not a funeral, none of them were familiar with the dead Empress. This was a chance to make connections and sign trade deals.

Prince Ender from America adjusted his tie and drew in a long breath. "I need a smoke." he muttered.

His wife pinched him on the arm and hissed as she whispered, "It is bad enough that we are being watched as the enemy but you want to smoke. Do you want to feature on the Mighty little peep star’s page?"

Prince Ender winced. "I didn’t say I was going to do it. Also the peep star has more interesting things to write about like how cozy the Cyprian princess and that Chinese prince are. Are they planning to form some kind of alliance?"

The monks in their robes stood up and began their chants--low, rhythmic and ancient. Everyone raised their heads to witness the last rites.

The glass casket was opened and the body of the Empress was carried out and lifted onto a pyre of rose wood. sandalwood and camphor. It was under a shed which was not affected by the rain.

No eulogies were read, no speeches were given. No wails were heard. No doves or birds were released as the Empress had stated in her will. This was because she had asked her uncle Hui Zhenting to release the doves for her. The Emperor was not about to allow that happen.

As the flames rose, Mei Mei looked in the direction of the Hui family. The Empress’s parents were hugging, seeming heartbroken. Hui Zhenting’s eyes were red and his hand kept passing over his belt, around the area where his gun was.

Thanks to him, tensions were really high. Higher than the flames which were burning the body of the Empress.

Jingzhe leaned toward Mei Mei. "If Zhenting makes a move, who do you think he will try to take out here?"

Mei Mei’s eyes found her brother. "Probably Mingzhe. He blames him for the explosion even though the cause has already been discovered. He also blames the Emperor for failing to protect the Empress even though he was in another city at the time of the explosion. He has blamed everyone but her for actively seeking out her own death."

She thought the Empress was silly for not seeing through the naked plans of the Empress Mother. Why didn’t she ask herself why she was being released from confinement or being asked to speak out against tech companies?

Didn’t she ever wonder why none of the other royals escorted her on her rallies or why they did not express their support for her new cause?

Why didn’t she stop and wonder why despite one assassination attempt, she was encouraged to go out that very evening and keep going with her cause. Under normal circumstances, she should have been protected and the rallies would have been paused until the investigation ended.

Most importantly, why did she have an affair and deliberately get pregnant not once but twice? She was a fool. Throughout history, any Empress or royal concubine caught having an affair had only one end: death.
