Chapter 228: A prison riot.

Mo Chenyu was in the wrong prison. First, he had been transferred from a police cell to a minimum security prison at the base of the Imperial command in the capital.

Just early this morning, he had suddenly been transferred to the old cold prison, a maximum security prison that was known for housing some of the empire’s most dangerous criminals in the capital.

It was famous for its coldness during winter, silence--the kind that drove men mad because inmates were not too eager to chat. One wrong word could get one on the wrong side of a gang in the prison. For safety, most inmates that were not affiliated moved like ghosts.

The cold prison was also famous for its guards that were as cold than the lake at the edge of the prison and even colder than the cells.

On the surface, it was the perfect prison, not an iota of disorder disrupted its systems but on the inside, beneath the unseen walls lay a corrupt system. It was so corrupt that even the news did not dare to publish headlines about the prison.

Rumor had it that noble families controlled the prison. It was their dumping ground for those that offended them. Once one went in, they rarely saw the outside world again. If they did, they came out with broken or missing limbs and scars.

The prison was run on a class system. The rich lived fat good lives in their own section. Their lackeys did not have it so rough as they were taken care of. The ordinary citizens were on their own, physical strength protected them more than monetary strength.

The cold prison was also a house of business. In a section cordoned off and only accessible to a few, bare knuckle fights were hosted and live streamed through special channels. The fighters profited of course, but the prison warden and guards profited even more.

In another section, pornographic shoots were also captured and live streamed. Women were smuggled into the prison through a boat and a tunnel.

Other businesses included online gambling rings, forgery and ID scams, money laundering and information brokering.

Once, they started running drugs but the information reached the higher ups and they put a stop to it.

Still, the economy of the cold prison thrived so much more than some of the largest companies in the empire. But it was not all bad. The prison had a school from where prisoners acquired legitimate knowledge and sat for legal exams.

It had a small hospital where medical knowledge was taught...[as long as nobody held a scalpel or any other sharp object]. There was a church, a temple, sports field, gym and a library.

None of these things concerned Mo Chenyu. What concerned him was the fact that he was in the prison where only few ever returned from. He had a feeling that the Jun family had played a hand in his new accommodation status.

As the prison guards moved him again and pushed him into a new cell, he shouted at the top of his voice, "I am not supposed to be here."

The guards did not respond to him, They just walked away as the doors locked. The beeping sound they made seemed to seal Chenyu’s fate.

He continued to shout for two hours, annoying his neighbors that warned him time and time again to shut up. But he would not stay quiet.

"I demand a phone call. I am Jun Meilin’s brother-in-law, the Jun family is my backer. I know the Imperial commander and I know....." He shouted off name after name of all the important people he knew but it made no difference.

At exactly 15: 00 hours, something unexpected happened in the cold prison. The silence which it was famous for was shattered.

A prison riot began in Block C, when prisoners were being led back into their cells for a surprise general inspection. A prisoner threw a punch at a guard and grabbed a hold of his gun.

He fired into the air two times, sending inmates surging like wildfire through corridors. Radios crackled, metal clanged. Voices roared like a choir inviting the holy spirit to visit the earth.

A new prison guard reached for the main alarm button but it did not ring--every other alarm had also been disabled somehow, twenty minutes before the first gunshot rung.

The prison’s command center was helpless, it had been hacked into and outside wiring had been cut, conveniently. The warden shouted orders to his men, urging them to quell the riot. A thin smirk crossed his face as he monitored one particular cell through the body cam footage captured by the prisoner in the opposite cell of the target.

Conveniently, prison guards were missing from their posts, a fire had been set and smoke was heavy in the air. The riot moved with precision like a well coordinated orchestra, gangs that had not spoken or worked together in years moved along smoothly like one river. Cell doors opened , screams bounced from wall to wall, blending with laughter in places where grunts were heard and blood splattered.

Amid the chaos, two men moved differently.

They were dressed like other prisoners but their uniforms had a green stripe, identifying them as wealthy and untouchable. The two men were code named Spider and the other Racoon.

Wherever they passed, prisoners gave way, fight broke up and whispers replaced the noise. They were quick as the job had to get done quickly.

There was an army base in the Cold town and soon the army and police would be inside these walls. They made it all the way to Cell block E where Mo Chenyu was being held.

When they were about to reach the cell where their target was, Racoon stopped Spider. He looked back and gestured to some prisoners to come over. "Bring him out he ordered."

The warden could only curse and grit his teeth as Mo Chenyu was dragged out of the cell. He had been hoping to get some blackmail material. It was why he asked the prisoner in the cell opposite Mo Chenyu’s to wear a body cam.

They had all figured that Mo Chenyu would not dare to run out in the riot. He was new to the prison after all.

The prisoners dragged him and threw him into the chaos. Mo Chenyu was so confused that it took him a moment to register the fact that he had been stabbed.

One hour later, the military and different law enforcement agencies had the situation under control. Ambulances were rushing the injured to hospitals. The prison warden was addressing reporters.

"This riot was a result of a tensions between a prison guard and one of our inmates. It was a well coordinated attack meant to seek revenge on the guard for punishing the inmate two months ago.

We have also discovered that some inmates were hoping to use the opportunity to escape. Luckily, they failed and the prison guards under my command took control of the situation quickly and neutralized all the threats.

Unfortunately, we have ten injured, many bruised and three dead."

Two men were toasting at this very moment, hidden deep inside a submarine under the Cold lake. Their mission had been a success.
