Kissed and Seduced By the Most Rough Man in the Village-Chapter 543: The Turmoil of the Peng Family
Fool!
Of course, the Peng family might be involved with spies. Otherwise, with the Zhang family’s usual soft and passive approach, how could they have been in such a hurry to divorce?
Su Xiaoxiao silently mocked in her heart.
But Zhang Xiyue clearly didn’t think in this direction, still crying pitifully.
Grandma Wang opened her mouth, as if to explain something. But seeing Zhang Xiyue’s utterly clueless expression, she ended up swallowing the words she wanted to say.
Right now, the national security office might be casting a long line to catch a big fish. If they explained too much and the Peng family got wind of it, the plan would be ruined. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
The Zhang family had been living under the same roof as someone who might be a spy. Now, in order to protect themselves, they had to be very careful. If they disrupted the national security office’s strategy, they could all be arrested and shot as spies.
"Anyway, I’m giving you two choices. Pick one quickly," Grandma Wang said with a stern face, unusually serious.
Zhang Xiyue, however, was still acting like a drama queen from a melodramatic series, crying and shaking her head in protest.
"I don’t want to choose! I want my mom and dad! Why do I have to go to the countryside? I’m about to graduate from the College for Workers and Farmers!" she cried, desperately.
She was only six months away from graduating and would soon be assigned to a small administrative position in a unit. If she dropped out now and went to the countryside to support rural construction, she would not only become the laughingstock of her community, but she might never be able to return.
Zhang Zhiyuan, who had been listening to her, suddenly scoffed coldly.
"Do you still have the nerve to mention the College for Workers and Farmers? With your high school grades, you shouldn’t even have been able to enter the College for Workers and Farmers. If it weren’t for someone trying to use your mother to ingratiate themselves with the Zhang family, you would have already been sent to the countryside."
"And have you cherished the opportunity to attend college? You skip at least two days of class every week. And when you are in class, you would rather daydream than listen attentively," he added, his voice full of disdain.
Zhang Xiyue froze in shock. She couldn’t believe her father knew everything about her behavior, even the things her mother didn’t know.
In truth, although Zhang Zhiyuan didn’t like Peng Huijing’s underhanded methods to gain favor with the Zhang family, he didn’t neglect his children entirely. But even the occasional involvement in their lives was enough to fuel his anger at their misdeeds.
"But I’ve never worked on a farm! Most people who go to the countryside never come back! I’m already nineteen, almost twenty. I could be getting married right now—why do I have to go to the countryside? How long will I have to stay there? Even if I can come back one day, my skin will be dark from the sun, and no good family will want me!" Zhang Xiyue stomped her foot in frustration.
Zhang Zhiyuan looked her up and down and then sneered. "You think getting married will make everything smooth sailing? Your mother got married, but she wasn’t very smart, and she ruined everything—her child’s life, her future, and even dragged both her family and your father’s family into the mess. With your kind of thinking, no family will want you, no matter who you marry. Marriage is meant to forge bonds, not create enemies. So don’t even think about marriage until you’ve learned the meaning of responsibility."
"Dad, you’re too much!" Zhang Xiyue screamed, her tears flowing freely as she tried to run away.
But Grandma Wang blocked her path. "If you leave now, it means you’ve chosen the first option."
Zhang Xiyue froze, unable to move, standing there crying pitifully and wiping her tears.
Grandpa Zhang glanced at the time and spoke calmly, "You have one night to think it over."
He then turned to Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun, his expression softening. "It’s getting late, let’s go eat dinner."
Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun didn’t try to persuade her any further. They followed Grandpa Zhang into the dining room, leaving Zhang Xiyue behind, sobbing uncontrollably in the living room.
Meanwhile, Peng Huijing’s return to the Peng family wasn’t any better. She came back with her divorce papers in hand, and the sight of them shocked the entire family.
"Huijing, you’ve just been released from the detention center! Why didn’t you go back to the Zhang family, and instead came here?" Granny Hu asked, furrowing her brow.
Peng Huijing didn’t answer, her face dark as she sat down on the couch.
The Peng family gathered around her immediately.
"Don’t be silent. What happened? Did you have a fight with the Zhang family? I heard your father-in-law and husband have both been suspended. How badly has this affected them? Are they planning to rescue your brother?" Peng Huijing’s sister-in-law asked anxiously.
Peng Huijing glanced at her and suddenly sneered. "Of course, they won’t rescue my brother! They wouldn’t even rescue the Zhang family’s bloodline, so why would they care about the Peng family’s survival?"
"What do you mean by that?" Granny Hu snapped, her eyes narrowing with anger. "You said that if we saved you, you would help the Zhang family rescue your son and your brother! Now that you’re out, you’re just abandoning your brother?"
"I can’t even save my own son—how could I save my brother?" Peng Huijing’s voice trembled, and fear washed over her face. "Don’t expect anything from the Zhang family. They’ve forced me to divorce for their own protection."
As she spoke, a sense of terror overwhelmed her. She had married into the Zhang family for so many years and had been working hard to raise her son, but now everything was crumbling. It was all because of Su Xiaoxiao’s interference, which had led to repeated failures. Now her son was about to be executed, and her life and future had been shattered.
If her brother were also executed, she would have no family left. She knew too much to be left alive. The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Granny Hu and her sister-in-law, hearing her words, grew even more anxious.
Without thinking, the two of them grabbed Peng Huijing by the clothes and shook her frantically.
"You heartless woman! How can you abandon your brother like this? Your son is a Zhang, so the Zhang family will naturally take care of him. But your brother is a Peng, and he got into this mess because of you! You can’t just wash your hands of it!"
"Right! If you don’t rescue your brother, I’ll report you to the police! Let them arrest you and throw you back into detention!" Peng Huijing’s sister-in-law threatened.
But suddenly, Peng Huijing’s face turned grim, and she slapped her sister-in-law hard across the face.
