Chapter 264.1 - Yokomichi Subjugation Battle 3

BGM: Catch Me If You Can

===

Well, the decoy role of the Twin Shadows had finally come to an end. I couldn't push Yokomichi any further outside and make him expend more energy.

「Finally, it's time for the direct confrontation.」

I looked at the makeshift plaza in front of the church, hastily set up for intercepting Yokomichi.

At a glance, it looked like there was nothing strange about it. However, a pitfall with a 10-meter diameter and 5-meter depth had been carefully dug below it.

Inside the pit, I'd placed the hastily inscribed 『Bottomless Abyss』 and whatever sacrificial items I had on hand. I used it to break through the outer shell in the Yamata no Orochi battle, but this time, it’s for attacking the massive creature called Yokomichi. In the simplest sense, dissolving anything that fell in was the proper way to use the 『Rotten Bog』.

「I'm so unprepared that I feel giddy…」

The only plan I could come up with in my current state was this single pitfall. If this didn’t take him down, I had no plan left.

I did have a last-resort—namely the core bomb I prepared as a backup for the finishing blow in the Yamata no Orochi subjugation battle—but if I set it off here, there’s no way we’d make it out unscathed. It packs enough firepower to blow Yokomichi to pieces, but it was too risky to use. I’d prefer to avoid such a drastic measure if possible.

That’s why the plan was as simple as it gets: drop him into the pitfall and have everyone unleash an all-out attack from above, like a group of cavemen hunting a mammoth.

「I know it's still lacking something, but let’s think about that later, after he falls into the pitfall.」

After positioning the newly created offshot directly above the pitfall, all that was left for me to do was wait for Yokomichi to arrive.

The weather outside isn’t a blizzard, but it's still lightly snowing. The sky has the kind of unsettled look that suggests a storm could break out at any moment.

But for now, the world was wrapped in an eerie silence, with only the soft, steady falling snow. All of us held our breath and waited.

And then, after 5~10 minutes had elapsed, the tranquility was finally disturbed.

「Bwahahahaha! There you are, Kotaro-kyu~n!」

The monster called Yokomichi appeared right from the central plaza.

He rushed from the middle of the street with that disgusting, giant caterpillar-like body.

「Come at me, Yokomichi, I won’t escape this time!」

「Despite what you say, you’re nothing but an offshot, right? But it’s frustrating since it’s an extremely tempting offeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!」

The creature called Yokomichi rushed at once as he screamed happily.

RUMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Thus, he triggered the pitfall.

Well, with this reckless, headstrong charge, there was no way Yokomichi wouldn’t fall for it.

「WHAT THE HELL IS THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!?」

The fallen Yokomichi let out a startled cry, which quickly turned into a scream.

「UGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, I-I’M MELTIIIIIIIIIING! WHAT THE HELL IS DHIS!?」

What the heck is “Dhis”? No, never mind. It seems the poison from the 『Rotten Bog』 was effective. I was a bit worried he might have full immunity to poison or corrosion, but as long as it was effective, there was no problem.

Of course, it will probably take quite some time to completely dissolve that massive caterpillar body.

「NOW, ATTACK!」

This was our first and last chance.

Everyone who could fight—Kyouko, I, Rem, and the corpse doll, and now Kinako and Beniwo—burst out of the church, launching a full-scale assault at Yokomichi who had fallen below.

「BREAK THROUGH THIS TIME————『Terra Fortis Sagita (Rock Spear)』!」

The first to attack was Kyouko.

She had taken up a sniper position on the 2nd floor of the church, allowing her to aim directly at the plaza.

Yokomichi, who had fallen into the pitfall, was still within the line of fire from above. The launched rock spear struck directly at Yokomichi, who was struggling in the acid swamp at the bottom of the pit.

「Nuuuugaaahhh! That hurts, Randou, you biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!」

Tch, missed the headshot, huh.

However, the rock spear pierced through Yokomichi’s abdomen, right around the boundary where it was transforming into the caterpillar body.

Even though the monster part of Yokomichi was cut off, he didn’t seem to be in pain. However, when the attack hit the original human part of his body, he seemed to take damage.

「Aim for his human part! Keep attacking his human parts!」

Though I shouted and gave the order, I did not join the direct attack.

My role was to summon 『Redhair Twine』 from the 『Rotten Bog』.

I bound the caterpillar body thrashing in the acid swamp and extended the tentacles toward Yokomichi. Considering its strength, even my full effort to restrain it wouldn’t do any good, but given the damage from the acid swamp and the ongoing all-out assault, I could keep it sufficiently entangled.

「PUGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!」

「WOOF WOOF, BOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!」

Kinako and Beniwo were fighting fiercely, as if avenging their master.

Actually, since I heard Kinako could throw stones, I entrusted him with grenades and makeshift throwing spears.

It seems he truly understood what I said, since he carefully threw grenades into the pitfall.

As for Beniwo, he relentlessly unleashed fire breath. Though its range wasn’t particularly long, the blazing flame extended more than enough to pour down into the bottom of the pitfall from above.

Yokomichi had high resistance to extreme heat, but that only applied to his monster parts. Even just burning the unprotected human sections could deal a decent amount of damage.

「GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!」

Then, the two grimgore corpse dolls unleashed their sand breath with full force, as if they didn’t care if it drained the last of the magic sustaining their bodies.

However, the real attacks came from Kyouko’s earth magic and the dark knight Rem equipped with her black-horn bow.

「Whoa, that was close! That almost hit me right on the head, ain’t it!?」

Tch, Rem’s arrow was about to land a perfect headshot, but the bastard covered his arms with something like a turtle shell and used it as a shield.

Yokomichi raised turtle shell-like shields, the shell-covered arms protecting his head and body, but it was far from a perfect defense. It was more of a desperate, makeshift measure.

「KEEP IT UP!」

「DREAM, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!」

The tightly bound redhair twine snapped and tore apart with a series of sharp, popping sounds. From within the caterpillar-like body, not just two, but four new arms sprouted forth.

Arms covered in shaggy fur like a monkey’s. Dog-like arms with sharp claws. Frog-like arms with webbed fingers. Sharp, spindly ones like spider legs.

Each of those arms—one of each kind—stretched so long that they reached from the bottom of the pit all the way to the top.

The four monstrous arms that had broken free from their restraints firmly grasped the edge of the pit, slowly but steadily pushing the massive body of Yokomichi up from the bottom of the pitfall.

「Rem, aim for the right arms. Kinako, take care of the left one! Ignore the spider legs, they're too tough. Kyouko, blow off the thumb on the monkey arm!」

I had already anticipated that he would grow arms and climb up from the pit.

In that situation, the vanguard—Rem and Kinako—would take care of the outstretched arms. I had already told Kyouko to assist with just the first shot.

Yokomichi was a tough nut, especially with those strange abilities. To wear him down with just the pitfall tactic, we needed to prepare for other situations, such as when he tried to climb up from the pit.

「OVER THERE! FIREEEEEEEEEEE!」

Kyouko fired her magic, just as I instructed, and it shot through the thumb of the monkey hand.

The reason I targeted only this one was simply because that monkey arm seemed the most capable of bracing itself while climbing the pit.

Thus, my first target was the monkey arm.

Rem, who perfectly grasped my intention, switched from the black-horn bow to her greatsword and slashed at the monkey arm.

Yes, there was no need to slash the whole arm—decapitating the fingers should be enough.

First, destroy the thumb to weaken its grip on the ground. Then cut off the remaining four fingers, and that should be enough to make the monkey arm completely lose the grip strength needed to pull the body up. After that, all it could do was scratch at the ground with its palm.

「PUGUGUGUGU, PUGAAAAAAAA!」

Kinako got attacked by the dog-like arm.

This one’s sharp claws dug into the ground, so it seemed to have strong support power. However, since its shape wasn’t as easy to cut off like fingers, Kinako would have to focus and give it his all in concentrated attacks. The grimgore would also join in to help out.

The frog-like arm was covered in slimy mucus, so despite the size of its palm, it didn’t seem to have much grip on the ground. Also, since its skin was smooth and slippery without fur or armor, Rem’s greatsword should be able to slice through it easily.

If we could disable at least three of the four extended arms, the remaining arm wouldn’t have enough power left to climb up.

The spider legs, covered in a hard shell, remained uselessly stuck in the ground and could be safely ignored for now.

「Ugh, d-damn it, you small fried…」

The escape arms were easily neutralized, and Yokomichi let out an irritated growl.
