Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 457 Nuwa Actually Comes to Coax the Child
So she smiled radiantly, and it seemed as if the surrounding flowers lost their color in the instant she smiled, her vermilion lips lightly parting, "Thank you."
At that moment, He Xi was holding a lollipop made by Chen Nuo while reading a book, saying she was reading, but in reality, she couldn’t absorb a single word. She felt that this sister was different from the brothers who had come before.
It seemed this sister liked Chen very much, and it was that kind of liking. She hadn’t quite figured out what this kind of liking meant, but she always felt something was off, as if this sister would take Chen away from her.
As she was thinking, a sudden knock at the door made He Xi scramble up from the bed, "Chen, how come you..."
But when she opened the door, it was not Chen Nuo but the beautiful sister from before.
He Xi’s facial expression froze for a moment, then she continued with the smile from before, "Oh, it’s you, sister. Do you need something?"
Although Xuan Feng didn’t understand what Nuwa intended to do, she still felt uneasy.
She was somewhat worried that Nuwa, due to her fondness for Chen Nuo, might set aside her own dignity to apologize to this mortal, so she followed Nuwa inside.
She didn’t dare to perch on Nuwa’s shoulder, only flapping her wings continuously as she followed behind Nuwa.
"I wanted to come and see you," Nuwa said.
Although somewhat reluctant, He Xi still opened the door for Nuwa, "Please come in, sister."
Nuwa entered and looked around the room.
The room, though not very large, was compact and fully equipped, with everything inside appearing very cozy. It was clearly a little girl’s room, whether it was the bed, the curtains, or the utensils, all were pink, the color that little girls loved most.
It was not just He Xi who couldn’t resist the charm of such a room; even Nuwa felt her heart stir upon seeing it. Her own residence had never been decorated with such care, and it was evident that Chen Nuo had arranged it.
Chen Nuo claimed that he didn’t like children at all, but he actually cared a great deal about He Xi. The arrangement of the room showed his meticulous attention to detail.
It was precisely because of this attention to detail that Chen Nuo’s concern for He Xi wasn’t just about making sure she had enough to eat and drink. He also cared deeply about her heart, her mental state, and her dignity, and it was for this reason that he would get angry at those who doubted He Xi.
"Did Shopkeeper Chen arrange this room for you?" Nuwa asked as she looked at the large glass window, "This window is really beautiful, as if it holds nothing at all."
"Chen told me it’s called glass," He Xi said. "I clean it every day, otherwise it wouldn’t be this clean."
"You’re quite a diligent young girl," Nuwa praised. "How did you meet Shopkeeper Chen?"
"I was begging on the street when I saw Chen, and he had a big skewer of sugar-coated haws in his hand. I was just looking because sugar-coated haws are expensive, and they’re not something you can fill your stomach with. I had never eaten them before."
Recalling that day, He Xi continued, "When I passed by Chen, I just looked at him a bit longer and then he gave me the sugar-coated haws."
"He is a very kind person," Nuwa said, and just from the description, she could imagine Chen Nuo’s expressions and appearance.
He must have offered the sugar-coated haws to the little girl with a gentle, warm smile on his face. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"Then I took the sugar-coated haws and left," He Xi said with a smile, "but after I had taken just a few steps, I saw Chen picking up something that someone had dropped at a stall, and I remembered what my mother told me, to find a kind person. I thought Chen was the person I was looking for, so I followed him."
Nuwa listened quietly to He Xi’s description. The smile on her face while she spoke clearly showed how fond she was of Chen Nuo.
"I kept following him until we were outside the town, and then he suddenly disappeared with another brother. I went back and told my mother, and she said Chen was an Immortal and insisted that I must get Chen to adopt me. She said Immortals are all very kind and would definitely take pity on me if they saw no one else would take me in."
He Xi’s words were naive; Nuwa knew that not all Immortals would adopt He Xi upon seeing her.
The Immortal Officials in the Heavenly Court actually adhere strictly to the rules. To put it nicely, this means adhering to the rules; to put it unpleasantly, it means they don’t interfere in other affairs.
Unless they are on a mission with specific orders, they generally do not meddle in extraneous matters.
If He Xi hadn’t come across Chen Nuo but a different Immortal Official, they would have, at most, offered her help when she was at the brink of starvation, but they definitely would not take the entire responsibility upon themselves.
"Shopkeeper Chen is indeed a good person; you are lucky to have met him."
Nuwa didn’t plan to hide Chen Nuo’s goodness from He Xi. On the contrary, she thought it was important to tell He Xi about it so that she would feel grateful towards Chen Nuo.
"I knew that, actually," said He Xi. "In the past, I didn’t understand anything. I only knew I had met an Immortal brother. Later on, after reading the books that Chen gave me, I realized that not all Immortals are as good as Chen is."
"It’s good that you understand this," Nuwa nodded, then continued to listen to He Xi’s description.
"When I saw Chen disappear on the outskirts of the town, I just kept waiting for him in the town. Actually, I wasn’t really sure if he would even come back, but I was prepared to live in the town either way. I was all ready to accept that Chen might not come back, but to my surprise, he returned the next day."
"And then he adopted you?" asked Nuwa. "Or did you do something to let him know you were in need?"
Nuwa had just asked a simple question, but upon hearing it, the young girl began to feel aggrieved, her eyes reddening, "I didn’t do anything, sister, how could you think that of me?"
Indeed, He Xi had done nothing of the sort. She should have just told Nuwa outright, but instead of explaining first, she let her eyes well up with tears, making it seem as though Nuwa was being harsh.
"I only asked you a couple of questions, why are you crying?" Nuwa felt somewhat helpless, wondering if the child was doing it deliberately. Opening her mind, she decided to talk while observing the child’s inner emotions.
"After I met Chen again, I just kept following him. I wanted him to take me in, but I only followed him and did not plan to do anything. Chen took me in because he felt pity for me," explained He Xi.
With her mind opened, Nuwa saw into He Xi’s heart. He Xi was not overthinking things; mostly, she felt aggrieved.
A normal child would simply want to explain; they shouldn’t react this way. Nuwa felt puzzled as to why this was happening.
"Don’t cry anymore; I believe you haven’t done anything." Nuwa, having never consoled a child, could only soften her tone and speak slowly to He Xi, "It was presumptuous of me to make assumptions about you earlier. You are not what I had imagined. I have come here to make it up to you."
"Compensate?" He Xi looked up, her large eyes still wet with tears, "Why would you need to compensate me? Sister, did you do something wrong?"
