Chapter 235: Are They Serious..?

Lunch hadn’t even gotten into full swing and another batch of Cultists decided to take another crack at the city barrier, their attacks coming in waves as they launched spell after spell from the mountains nearby.

It wasn’t only spells either, since they must have constructed a trebuchet somewhere in the mountains as well since boulders were raining down onto the barrier too, and the only reason we knew they were real and not made with magic was the lack of mana that surrounded them.

Apparently they were hoping the non magic projectile would somehow be ignored by the barriers and let them land within - or at the very least, hit - the city walls, though that was a very foolish hope that they had.

From the cafeteria we could see the flashes of magic against magic all around the city, and for a few long minutes everything was silent in the Academy as we just... watched, uncertain of what to do and unable to determine if we should be truly worried or just ignore everything.

As the minutes ticked by and the thick mana barrier around the city remained in place, hesitant conversation picked up around the cafeteria once more, and Lu’Shaki was the first to murmur "Well... damn, they must be serious about this..." amongst our group.

I nodded slowly in agreement, watching as a fireball exploded against the barrier before a deluge of water splashed against it nearby, the two conflicting elements being dissipated all the same thanks to our defenses.

"I believe this means that Mythia is officially under siege... which... well, it certainly doesn’t feel like it, now does it?"

The others all nodded in agreement to my assessment, and after another moment Anwen chimed in and said "Honestly I am really surprised that they are this determined to attack Mythia head on. Everyone knows that the city is an impenetrable fortress; it’s why no country has ever bothered after the failed sieges two centuries ago."

"Well, someone always wants to try, and also most people don’t really ’remember’ those sieges since the countries that were involved failed so miserably... and truly, this probably has more to do with the Demon than anything else."

We all began to pick at our food after that, too deep in thought to really start eating but still feeling quite hungry anyways, so for a few moments we all just sat in silence and ’enjoyed’ the atmosphere and the meal.

"It sort of makes me wonder how the Academy is going to go about the explorations that they tend to host for each year. We were meant to head out into the mountains and take a look around, but now... you think that’s off the table completely, or..?"

I shrugged and answered "Most likely, what with it being a Demon and not just bandits." while Kha’Miero let out a huff and said "They might keep them on anyways, just bundle more of us together with additional Professors."

"I hope so, ’cause I was really~ looking forwards to being out in the wilderness sharing my tent with a bunch~ of lucky futanari~!"

Anwen being her usual horny self was a surprisingly effective calming presence for us all, and even as we all rolled our eyes at her she just grinned and began to eat in earnest, devouring her food before coyly asking if Lu’Shaki wanted to ’get some practice’ in for whenever that occured.

They left us first, and a little after that so did Ishtarnii, leaving Kha’Miero, Sera and I at the table, quietly finishing our food before both of us Human’s looked towards the Draconian, who just nodded once and got up soon after.

Our lunch break ended around the same time that they stopped bombarding the barrier, and we got through most of our next class before they started it back up, setting a new ’standard’ for us going forwards as we began to experience a scheduled attack.

It would go on for anywhere between thirty minutes to an hour before pausing for about two hours, where it would then start up anew and hit new areas, like they were searching for a weak spot that ’sadly’ didn’t exist.

Since the Academy was so far inside of the barrier we couldn’t hear much within its walls, but when we stepped outside and just took it in we could hear the distant rumbling and cracks, which if one wasn’t seeing the magic being slung around freely they might actually think that it was just thundering deeper in the mountains.

It continued through dusk and all night long, even resuming again at dawn when we woke up for classes; some students were getting really bothered by it - understandably so - whilst most of us were beginning to tune it out already, though seeing our Professors being rather wound up reawakened some of our unease.

Just like that another day slipped us by, and not once did the attacks stop... yet not once did they ever go stronger or more abundant; they just maintained a constant pressure at allotted times, and the more I thought about it the weirder it made me feel.

Everything was just... odd about this, but there was little that I myself could do about it, so I just focused on heading to class and spending most of my free time in the training grounds, shooting my bow or practicing my spells with whomever was nearby.

Simple conditioning, some weight training, weapons practice and then brushing up on basic magic really helped bolster my foundation just a bit, and the more I practiced the more comfortable I became with all of these things.

It was something that was going to be a gradual, almost unnoticeable change, but the me now and the me from just a few days ago were already rather different, which gave me confidence about what I was doing currently.

If I could maintain this somewhat slow yet steady pace then I was going to be rather competent somewhere in the near future, and that alone made me rather giddy... especially since I was still able to have the fun I wanted whenever I wanted it.

Training was just taking more of my time now, but all that ended up meaning was that the releases were getting all the sweeter every single time that they happened... and that was something that I could appreciate.
