Invincible through Touching Corpses-Chapter 73 - 72: Superpower Alliance
The moment Lin Xinghai stepped into the Mercenary Guild, a huge clamor washed over him.
In the main hall, numerous Mercenaries were scattered about, some standing and some sitting. But without exception, all their eyes were fixed on the massive floor-to-ceiling screen in the center of the hall.
The screen was constantly refreshing with new information. This included mission postings from the Mercenary Guild, recruitment notices posted by Mercenary Corps for a fee of Points, and requests for collaboration.
Of course, there was also information on Hunter squads, but it only occupied a small section of the screen.
Next to the main hall was something even larger than the mission hall... a bar!
The main source of the noise was coming from the bar. Even though it was still morning, the place was already more than half full.
Many of the Mercenaries were talking loudly and boasting, most of them there to blow off steam. Of course, a small few were there to look for partners.
In the midst of it all, arguments would occasionally break out among the Mercenaries, but they never went beyond that.
Here, no Mercenary would let a war of words escalate into a brawl.
It wasn’t that the Mercenaries were particularly civilized, but rather that if they actually dared to throw a punch, they’d be tossed out of the Mercenary Guild in under a minute. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
After scanning his surroundings, Lin Xinghai focused his attention on the information scrolling across the large screen, particularly the section on Hunter squads.
Soon, he spotted three Hunter squads that were on the list Roger had given him.
Having identified his potential targets, he walked over to a nearby public terminal. He scanned his Mercenary Badge and logged into the Mercenary Guild’s internal network.
He then began to look up the detailed information on those three Hunter squads.
Before long, Lin Xinghai had locked onto a squad called the Superpower Alliance.
This Hunter squad had only five members, just barely meeting the minimum team requirement. But amazingly, all five of them were Superpower Users.
For a Hunter squad, such a lineup was truly impressive. Even many Mercenary Corps didn’t have that many members with awakened Superpowers.
However, as Lin Xinghai read on, his expression grew a little strange.
According to the file, the first person listed was, of course, the captain of the Superpower Alliance, Gao Mountain.
Gao Mountain’s Superpower was Earth Wall. He could control the soil on the ground, causing it to rise and form a wall.
The Superpower sounded decent, but since the Earth Wall was made of ordinary soil, its Defense Power left much to be desired.
The vice-captain was named Ling Xiu, and his Superpower was Thousand-Mile Eye, which allowed him to see things several kilometers away.
If all their detectors were to fail, his Superpower would make him a decent scout.
Lin Xinghai’s gaze shifted down. The next person listed was a female member named Zhang Meiling.
Her Superpower was to create a clone that could last for three minutes. However, this clone had no combat ability whatsoever and would pop at the slightest touch from an enemy.
Among the five members, the only ones Lin Xinghai felt were even remotely useful were a pair of twin brothers.
One of the brothers was named Huang Nuo, and the other was Yao Cheng.
So why did the twins have different surnames? Ahem. No need to overthink it; one had simply taken their father’s surname and the other their mother’s. There was even a note about it in their files.
Of course, that wasn’t what Lin Xinghai was focused on. Their Superpowers were.
Huang Nuo’s Superpower was Enhancing. When used, it could increase an ally’s physical condition by 10% for 30 seconds.
Yao Cheng’s Superpower was Weakening, which could reduce an enemy’s physical condition by 10% for 30 seconds.
The magnitude of the buff or debuff from their Superpowers wasn’t large, and under normal circumstances, their effects wouldn’t be very significant. But it all depended on the situation.
If Fang Tianhe was piloting a Mecha and fighting a Mutated Zombie, and the two were locked in a stalemate, one of them using an Enhancing Superpower and the other a Weakening one could very well be the deciding factor in the battle.
One could say that the higher the level of combat these two brothers participated in, the greater the potential impact of their Superpowers.
But cooped up in this Superpower Alliance, they really couldn’t accomplish much.
After reviewing the files on all five members, Lin Xing made an interesting discovery: not a single one of their Superpowers had any Attack Power.
’In a team composed entirely of support-types, who exactly are they supposed to support?’
Lin Xinghai continued reading. According to the Superpower Alliance’s own description, their captain, Gao Mountain, had been seriously injured while hunting Zombies yesterday and was temporarily unable to go out on hunts.
Therefore, they were looking to recruit someone to fill the vacant spot.
After reading their information, Lin Xinghai no longer hesitated. He walked over to a nearby service counter and got in line.
Here in the Mercenary Guild, there were no attendants who came at the wave of a hand.
There were plenty of armed guards, however, so if you needed to get anything done, you had to go to a service counter.
Fortunately, there were enough service counters that each line only had a few people, and it was soon Lin Xinghai’s turn.
"How can I help you?" the attendant asked.
"I’d like to apply to join the Superpower Alliance squad," Lin Xinghai said.
The attendant checked the information and then asked, "According to the Superpower Alliance squad’s requirements, they are recruiting members who either have an awakened Superpower or a Genetic Optimization Level of 60%. Sir, do you meet these requirements?"
"Yes, I do." Lin Xinghai had already seen their requirements before coming over.
"Alright, please present your Mercenary Badge."
After scanning the Mercenary Badge Lin Xinghai produced, the attendant continued, "I have registered you. Please proceed to room 235 on the second floor to speak with the members of the Superpower Alliance squad in person."
Lin Xinghai took back his Mercenary Badge and went up the stairs to the second floor.
The second floor of the Mercenary Guild was almost entirely made up of rooms, large and small, that any Mercenary could rent temporarily for meetings, collaborations, and the like.
After all, not all Mercenaries liked to discuss business in noisy places like the main hall or the bar.
What’s more, some collaborations between Mercenary Corps required a degree of confidentiality, making it quite appropriate to rent a room.
Following the room numbers, Lin Xinghai found room 235.
Since he had an appointment, he swiped his Mercenary Badge at the door, and it opened automatically.
It was a small room, only about 10 square meters, containing an ordinary coffee table and a sofa. Yet the rental fee was 10 Points per hour.
There were four people in the small room. With a single glance, Lin Xinghai was able to match their faces to the descriptions in the files he had just read.
The twin brothers must be Huang Nuo and Yao Cheng, though for the moment, Lin Xinghai couldn’t tell who was who.
The young woman sitting quietly to one side was Zhang Meiling.
As for the stern-faced young man standing in the middle and looking at him, by process of elimination, that could only be Ling Xiu.
He was also the one Lin Xinghai paid the most attention to. As the vice-captain, he was surely the temporary captain for their upcoming missions.
While Lin Xinghai was sizing them up, they were doing the same to him.
"Hello. Did you awaken a Superpower, or is your Genetic Optimization Level over 60%?" Ling Xiu asked bluntly after looking Lin Xinghai over.
Lin Xinghai replied, "I awakened a Superpower."
Ling Xiu asked, "What is it?"
Lin Xinghai had intended to tell them the truth, but the words caught in his throat.
He suddenly realized that his Speed Superpower would be of little use to this particular team. As for his combat ability, they had never seen it firsthand, so they probably wouldn’t believe him.
"My Superpower is called ’Shooting.’ When I use it, I can hit Zombies with one hundred percent accuracy," Lin Xinghai said.
