In This Rebirth, The Male Lead Is Mine [BL]-Chapter 199: First Battle For Fate’s Favor (5)
"There is." The woman answered.
Young Kamille’s eyes lit up, excited for the mission. Usually, their missions were mostly low-level gates and exterminating monsters.
That was not too hard, and he had grown used to it.
However, he did not know yet that it was the last time he would become excited doing missions.
"Uh...?" Young Kamille looked around, his trembling pupils swept his surroundings. His body was screaming in pain, but the shock he was feeling outweighed the pain.
He could not comprehend what happened. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
That monster... was the strongest he had ever seen.
The excited voices of the children echoed in his ears, and then it was their own agonizing screams. They all ran for their lives to escape the pursuit of the monster.
However, their limbs could not keep up, and one by one, the children were being devoured. Of almost two dozen kids who agreed to the mission, barely five were hanging on for survival.
Kamille crawled on the ground, gasping for air, and his snot and tears streamed down his blood-covered face.
This was a nightmare. The start of his years of nightmares.
The roar of the monster resonated with their fear, as young Kamille sobbed and wanted to get away from it as soon as possible.
"Noooo! Help meee!" A young voice drawn out by despair resounded once more. Once more, the monster has started to hunt them again.
Kamille shuddered, his whole body trembling, and he could only lift his head and look at the timer hanging on the door. He wanted to look for the adults, for his servant... but there weren’t traces of them, as though they were already abandoned.
No...
His pupils flickered with both despair and horror. The sounds behind him were getting near, and he knew that once the monster was done with the other, he would be next.
How... How to survive?
"Kana! Save me!" Young Kamille sobbed the name of his supposed servant, a protector, the one who took care of him.
And yet the always reliable servant was nowhere to be seen. Kamille had realized then what the true feeling of being alone felt like.
And soon, he would also realize the true meaning of being a weapon.
"Grr..." The sound of the monster drew near.
Young Kamille crawled until his body could not move anymore; he did not even know what was happening to the others or if he was the only one left alive.
As soon as he lifted his head, two glowing eyes met his.
It was over. Kamille was next to the menu.
Sure enough, the monster slowly slid its huge body across the floor. Its saliva pooled on the floor, mixing with the blood of the children.
Young Kamille’s breath hitched; all thoughts seemed to have left his mind.
Only one word occupied them: Death.
It was his death.
His body already froze from fear, and panic surged through his whole being to even think of trying to escape.
Seconds passed, and the monster reached his side. It leaned forward and faced Kamille’s frozen expression. Its saliva dripped on his face, and just as it was about to open its mouth and gulp down Kamille in one bite.
The wind around the surrounding area move and began to gather around Kamille. It was slow at first and soon picked up the pace until a huge whirlwind was created.
The monster paused, looked at the whirlwind, and then at Kamille. It tilted its head, but it soon ignored its surroundings and instead opened its mouth widely to swallow its meal.
However, before it could do so, its body separated and fell on the ground with a thud. Its eyes still had their confusion, but would not have a chance to know what happened.
[One awakened Esper in this batch.]
[Go retrieved him.]
Young Kamille blinked; he heard the sound echoing inside the room. He still did not have any idea of what was happening, but he was too weak to think deeper and fainted.
At the age of 9, Kamille was forcefully awakened as an Esper and began his full role as a weapon. This was also the time when the light in his eyes began to fade, and so his dream of retirement was forgotten.
Years passed, and Kamille turned 13. The year his life changed once more.
"You have to escape." The woman he trusted but had begun to grow distant after what happened was now pleading with him to escape.
Kamille stared back at her blankly. Where should he go? He ought to asked that, but he did not. Instead, he asked. "Why?"
Why should he escape?
Kana cried and pleaded once more. "Kamille. I don’t want you to die."
Kamille merely blinked. And this expression made Kana sob harder, brush his head, and hug him. "Please... You deserve to live."
Live? Wasn’t he still living? Kamille also did not realize just how his years of being a weapon, fighting nonstop, had numbed his emotions.
He became different, and Kana blamed herself for that, although that was not entirely her fault.
"Why?" Again, he asked.
Kana shook his head, eyes firmly shut, and tears endlessly flowed from her eyes.
"Come with me. This place is hell. They are trying to awaken something, and everyone... will be sacrificed."
Kana’s hands were trembling, and cupping Kamille’s face, looking him in the eye.
"Especially the espers, you. Everyone will die, and I don’t want you to. I’m sorry for keeping you in the dark, and I’m still guilty after all these years." Her tears made her voice muffled; she sniffed and shook her head. "Kamille, you’re like a son I could never have. And I’m so happy that you grew up so healthy, but... I betrayed you, right?"
Kana took a deep breath. "I want to apologize... and atone for my sins. I hope you live, and... fulfill your dreams."
She smiled through her tears.
"Do you know... when you said, you’ll buy me a mansion. I’m so happy that I began to imagine living there. That’s such a wonderful dream."
Her eyes softened behind her tears.
"Kamille, you have always been the hope that keeps on living. Thank you and... I’m sorry. So, please... escape. And never come back."
Kamille reamined his silence, but he felt her feelings and sincerity. He was also reminded of that childish declaration of his, and slowly he nodded.
"Can you come with me?" Kamille asked, which made Kana’s eyes widen slightly, but soon she smiled widely, happy to hear his voice.
Yet, she shook her head.
"I can’t..." She could not say it, but her troubled expression showed the impossibility of the idea.
Kamille was about to say anything but Kana’s expression suddenly changed. "How? It’s scheduled tomorrow..." She mumbled in disbelief. Her pupils trembled again, and then she glanced at Kamille, her expression turned solemn.
"Come with me. You have to leave now." She stood up and held Kamille by the hand, dragging him. Kamille also did not make it difficult for herself and followed on his own.
"I already prepared the escape route and a recommendation letter at the academy. The bank account is also sorted, and it will last you a few years at least." Kana began rambling and hurriedly spoke.
"Other reminders, I already put in the notebook, and you only need to read them once you’re in a safe place. My..." She stumbled as if hesitating, but continued.
"...I already sent him a letter, and once you say your name, he will take care of you in my stead."
"Who?" Kamille looked up and asked.
Kana paused and looked back, while cautious of the surveillance cameras.
"The guild leader of Dark Crimson Guild." Kana’s expression softened slightly when he spoke that title. She soon blinked and continued walking without saying anything more.
The area they traversed was unfamiliar as weapons like Kamille could not possible allowed in the main administrative area. Kana also skillfully opened doors and used means to redirect the other security measures elsewhere.
At some point, Kana became agitated, and her movements became faster. Sweats bead on her forehead, and she began to bite her nails.
Kamille was curious and wanted to ask, but he might distract her instead.
"Come on, faster." She mumbled, becoming anxious with each passing second, and when they arrived exited one of the rooms; she paused.
Kana wore a shocked and terrified expression, looking up. Kamille also did so; he sensed a huge concentration of mana somewhere. When he looked at Kana, she was also looking back.
"They are doing it now..." Kana mumbled, her expression sank. "Why? Why now? No, I should have let Kamille escape a week ago, even if my preparation isn’t complete. I can still..." Kana began mumbling to herself out loud.
"Kana," Kamille held her hand, snapping her out of her hysteria. "I ca—" he could not finish when Kana suddenly burst out in tears and hugged him again.
"No... I can’t let you die. You’re my son... my baby..." Kana’s uncontrolled sobs only took a few seconds before she stopped. She sighed and clenched her teeth.
"It’s not done yet. You can still escape." Kana raa, tagging Kamille along. She did not even care about the surveillance anymore.
The place where the escape route she prepared was a few doors away.
This time, she would not fail to protect someone she held dearly. She would not let her son die again.
"Kamille!" She shouted and pushed Kamille towards a door. Kamille could not even act when his body was pushed forward.
Kamille looked back and saw Kana’s face, smiling at him. "Live... and fulfill your dreams."
As the door closed shut, Kamille’s eyes widened, witnessing Kana’s body exploding and her blood and remains splattered everywhere.
