Chapter 67: The Great Escape

Adam’s Domain

Meanwhile, within his own quiet, separate domain, Adam observed the entire scene unfolding in the Whisperwood Forest through his connection with Eric.

A mass teleport involving nearly thirty individuals, some of whom were weak and injured, across a considerable distance to a specific, unfamiliar safe location within their own kingdom – that was an incredibly complex and draining feat, even for an experienced teleporter.

For Alina, who was still learning to control her powers, it was a monumental task, fraught with the risk of scattering the group, landing them in dangerous territory, severely depleting her own life force.

"She is resilient, and her base power is strong. But lending her a subtle hand here, a little guidance for her energy, might lead to even greater, more precise results, and ensure the safety of everyone involved, including Eric." He also knew that a successful, controlled mass teleport would be a significant boost to Alina’s confidence and her control over her abilities in the future.

Adam within his domain, raised one of his non-physical hands. A energy began to radiate from his fingertips.

Carefully, he extended this energy outward from his domain, aiming it directly for Eric, who stood in the physical world with his hand on Alina’s shoulder, forming a link in the chain of escapees.

Adam’s power slipped seamlessly through the unseen barriers that usually separated his domain from Eric’s consciousness, much like it had when he had reset Alina’s cooldown earlier.

As Adam’s stabilizing energy began to flow towards Eric, the System Window (Millenia) detected his intent. Understanding the benign nature of this intervention – to aid and stabilize and removed several of the minor protective barriers that usually firewalled Adam’s more direct influence from Eric’s conscious mind. The path was cleared.

The Whisperwood Forest Clearing

The instant Eric’s touch, now subtly energized by Adam’s influence, connected fully with Alina, she experienced a remarkable and instantaneous shift.

A profound clarity washed over her mind, like a cool, refreshing wave dispersing all her lingering uncertainty, her fear, and her anxiety about controlling such a massive teleport.

Her senses heightened, and her focus intensified dramatically, becoming a laser beam of intent. She felt a strange sense of calm confidence settle over her, a feeling that she could do this.

"Focus, Alina," she whispered inwardly. The destination. She needed a clear.

That was in their own kingdom. It was a known place. "We need to go to the Baron’s palace grounds," she thought, repeating it like a mantra.

Not inside the destroyed mansion itself, but somewhere safe on the outer estate, away from immediate danger, back in familiar territory. "We need to go to the Baron’s palace grounds."

She repeated this several times in her mind. Soon, vivid memories of the Baron’s estate filled her mind – clear images of the gardens, the outer walls, the surrounding landscape.

Alina drew a deep, steadying breath. She exhaled slowly, reinforcing her mental concentration, her connection to the chain of people holding hands around her, and the pinpoint destination in her mind.

At this precise, critical moment, just as Alina was about to unleash her power, a new sound broke the tense silence of the forest.

Figures began emerging from the dense trees at the edge of the clearing. Soldiers.

Dozens of them. They wore the red and gold armor of the Roland Kingdom. These were the border patrol units, dispatched to investigate the earlier reports of the high-speed flying object.

Their expressions were tense, their swords already drawn as they cautiously entered the clearing, clearly anticipating conflict.

Upon seeing the large, suspicious group of nearly thirty ragged-looking individuals and two better-dressed younger people gathered in their kingdom’s territory, so close to a known sensitive area, the Roland soldiers instantly assumed defensive stances. They fanned out, forming a semi-circle

.

"Intruders!" one of the lead soldiers, a sergeant, shouted, his voice sharp and commanding.

His shout prompted his companions to ready their blades more aggressively, taking a step forward, their expressions hard and unfriendly. They saw a large group of unknown people, trespassing deep within Roland territory. Their duty was clear.

Yet, before any true confrontation could occur – before any soldier could move closer to apprehend them, before the sergeant could shout another command or raise an alarm to summon reinforcements, before Eric could even think to react, Alina could fully process the new threat – Alina’s energy surged.

It wasn’t a wild, uncontrolled burst like her previous, desperate teleport from the Baron’s clutches.

This was different. A brilliant, controlled pulse of azure-blue magical power, tinged with the faint white glow from Eric’s hand on her shoulder, burst outward from the spot where she stood at the center of the circle of linked hands.

It wasn’t an explosion; it was an implosion of spatial energy, a focused warping of reality.

In a single, silent heartbeat, the entire group – Alina, Eric, her mother, her father, her brother, and all the rescued captives, still holding hands tightly – vanished. They were simply gone, plucked from the forest floor as if they had never been there.

They left behind only the disturbed grass where they had stood, the lingering scent of ozone from the teleportation, and an eerie, profound silence in the now-empty clearing.

The Roland Kingdom soldiers, who had been advancing, ready for a fight, halted abruptly. Their eyes widened in shock and utter disbelief. Weapons still raised, they stared incredulously at the empty space where dozens of people had stood only moments ago. One second, a crowd of suspicious intruders. The next, nothing. Just empty forest floor.

Bewildered murmurs broke the tense silence among the soldiers. They looked at each other, then back at the empty space, then around the clearing, as if expecting the vanished group to suddenly reappear from behind a tree or drop from the sky.

"What... what in the blazes just happened?" one soldier finally uttered, his voice echoing softly in the now strangely quiet clearing, his sword still held uncertainly before him.

Another soldier, a younger man, nervously licked his lips and glanced around the perimeter of the clearing, half-expecting an ambush. "Did they... did they all just... disappear?" he stammered, his voice filled with awe and a considerable amount of fear. "Magic?"

The sergeant in charge lowered his own sword slowly, his face a mask of confusion. He had seen powerful mages in his time, witnessed impressive displays of magical ability. But this... this was something else entirely. An entire group of people vanishing into thin air, without a trace, without a sound, in the blink of an eye. It was beyond his experience.

He knew he had to report this immediately. This was no mere border intrusion. This was something far stranger, and potentially, far more dangerous. The Roland Kingdom would need to know.

He motioned to two of his men. "You two, scout the immediate area. See if you can find any trace of where they went. The rest of you, secure this clearing. I’m going back to the outpost to send an urgent message to command."

The soldiers exchanged worried, puzzled looks under the looming, ancient trees of the Whisperwood Forest, the mystery of the vanishing intruders hanging heavy and unsettling in the silent air.
