Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 80: I’ll Prove It to You
After she finished speaking, Frances Bennett’s gaze landed on Sharon Quincy, refusing to miss even the slightest change in her expression.
In truth, she had noticed something was off about this woman for a while now.
While it was true Selina Nathan rarely attended banquets and almost never appeared in public, there was no way she could be such a plain, unremarkable woman.
She had met Linden Nathan and his wife in her youth. The couple looked like movie stars, and back in those days, before cosmetic surgery was common, their looks were all-natural. There was no way they could have given birth to such an ordinary-looking daughter.
Moreover, the young woman before her, judging by both her bearing and her looks, simply didn’t seem like a daughter of a wealthy family.
Although she had her doubts, she hadn’t dared to voice them publicly.
She never imagined that this "Selina Nathan’s" identity would actually turn out to be questionable.
"Of course I’m Selina Nathan, the one and only." Sharon Quincy hadn’t realized Frances Bennett was behind her and struggled to maintain her composure.
"Mrs. Bennett, who is Selina Nathan? She’s the sole heir to the Nathans of Aethelgard, Linden Nathan’s only daughter. Do you think I have a death wish, that I’d dare to impersonate her?" Sharon Quincy pointed at Cecilia Nathan and laughed sarcastically. "Cecilia is just jealous of me. You’re a woman of the world, Mrs. Bennett. How can you not see something so simple?"
"It’s not that I don’t believe you... Miss Nathan. It’s just that our Damian’s marriage cannot have a single thing go wrong." Here, Frances Bennett’s tone became delicate. "I believe for something as important as a marriage, it’s best for the parents to meet. I heard your father, Linden Nathan, will be in Korsyth in a few days. Our families can meet then to finalize the wedding arrangements."
The reason Frances was so cautious was that it had taken a great deal of effort to get Damian to agree to this marriage alliance. If anything went wrong, she was afraid her son might never want to marry at all.
Furthermore, the Hawthorne Family would become the laughingstock of all of Korsyth.
"Mrs. Bennett, you still don’t believe me..." Sharon Quincy sighed, her voice full of sorrow. "But that’s all right. I can prove it to you right now."
With that, Sharon Quincy took out her phone and said as she dialed, "I’ll call my dad right now."
The moment she finished speaking, the call went through.
Sharon Quincy confidently put the call on speakerphone.
When she heard the "Hello?" from the phone, Cecilia Nathan frowned.
It was the voice of her father, Linden Nathan.
She had been trying to call him for ages and couldn’t get through, yet Sharon Quincy connected on the very first try.
If she’d only been suspicious that her phone had been tampered with before, Sharon Quincy’s success had just confirmed it as fact.
Her phone had definitely been tampered with.
"Hello, Dad? It’s me," Sharon Quincy said in a cloying, sweet tone.
Frances Bennett held her breath, and a moment later, she heard Linden Nathan’s voice from the phone:
"Is there anything else I needed to know?"
"Well, Dad, I heard you’re coming to Korsyth in a few days for a business summit. Is that true?"
"Yes, it’s true. The trip has been confirmed."
Sharon Quincy shot Frances Bennett a meaningful look before saying with a smile, "Well, when you get here, I’ll introduce you to someone—the very person you’ve been wanting to meet."
Hearing this, Linden Nathan’s voice on the other end of the line brightened. "Excellent. I’ll be waiting for your good news, then. I look forward to meeting you both."
After that, Sharon Quincy quickly ended the call.
Although Frances Bennett hadn’t met Linden Nathan in person more than a few times, she had seen his interviews on the news.
Linden Nathan had a very distinctive voice. Despite his age, it was still deep, like that of a veteran actor—resonant and full-bodied.
Seeing how easily Sharon Quincy and Linden Nathan conversed, Frances Bennett’s doubts gradually faded.
"So, Mrs. Bennett, do you believe me now?"
Of course, Frances believed her.
Not only did she believe her, but she also assumed the "person he’ve been wanting to meet" from the conversation was either herself or Damian.
News of Linden Nathan’s upcoming visit to Korsyth had already spread through their social circles.
He was indeed scheduled to arrive in the next day or two.
As a result, many of Korsyth’s powerful and influential figures were waiting for his arrival to discuss potential collaborations.
A man of his wealth could boost the local economy of any city just by starting a joint venture or making an investment.
The news of Linden Nathan’s visit had sent shockwaves through the city’s affluent circles.
"I’m so sorry, Selina. I shouldn’t have doubted you," Frances said guiltily. "You know how it is. There have been so many con artists in our circles these past few years, I was just afraid of being swindled..."
"It’s all right, Mrs. Bennett, I don’t mind. Besides... a fake can’t pretend to be real forever, and the real thing can’t be faked," Sharon Quincy said, glancing pointedly at Cecilia Nathan.
Frances followed her gaze to Cecilia, her expression turning a little colder.
If Cecilia hadn’t said what she did, Frances wouldn’t have become suspicious in the first place.
"Cecilia, dear... you need to have a better attitude about these things. Even though you don’t come from a wealthy family, I’ve always thought you were a person of good character. You shouldn’t say baseless things like that in the future," Frances sighed. "Otherwise, I’ll be embarrassed for you."
Faced with Frances’s admonishment, Cecilia merely smiled, her expression calm and confident.
The moment Sharon Quincy had called Linden Nathan "Dad," Cecilia knew there was no use in saying anything more.
No matter what she said now, Frances would just label her as "jealous."
She didn’t know what kind of deal Sharon Quincy had struck with her father, but she could tell from the sound of his voice that he trusted the impostor completely.
"Selina, dear, there’s a banquet tonight. Why don’t you come with me? It will be a perfect opportunity for my friends to finally meet you." Frances affectionately took Sharon Quincy’s arm.
A look of pleasant surprise crossed Sharon Quincy’s face. "Of course! Thank you, Mrs. Bennett."
’Being invited to this banquet means Damian’s mother completely accepts my identity.’
’Not only that, attending this kind of party will help me expand my social circle.’
’Even if my identity is exposed later, the more people I know, the more bargaining chips I’ll have.’
’After all, moving in these circles is about status, but it’s even more about connections.’
’An invitation to this party from Damian’s mother is more than she could have ever hoped for.’
Without a backward glance at Cecilia, the two of them left together.
Cecilia walked up to the Hawthorne villa. Just as she was about to ring the doorbell, the door swung open as if the person inside had read her mind.
Damian Hawthorne leaned lazily against the doorframe, his pajamas hanging loosely on his body, giving him a languid and casual air.
He had clearly just showered; his hair was still damp and defined, with a few droplets of water clinging to the strands.
Fresh from the shower, his features seemed even sharper, and his skin looked a few shades fairer than usual.
He squinted, his narrowed eyes obscuring the clarity of his irises.
"Right on time."
He spoke languidly, reaching out to take the bag from Cecilia’s hands. His own, with their well-defined knuckles, paused when he saw the groceries inside.
"You brought groceries?"
"Yes, to save time." Cecilia didn’t dare to meet his eyes. She quickly changed her shoes and hurried toward the kitchen.
’If it weren’t for the need to repay Damian for his "life-saving" favor, she never would have set foot in the Hawthorne residence again.’
’She had even pre-chopped all the vegetables at home, just to minimize the time she had to spend here.’
An understanding smile touched Damian’s lips. His brown eyes were as dark and rich as undiluted ink.
He nonchalantly strolled over and placed the groceries on the kitchen counter.
Just then, his phone rang.
Damian picked up the phone with one hand, swiped to answer, and brought it to his ear.
"President Hawthorne, I think I’ve found that guy, Hugo!" Justin Bell’s voice was buzzing with excitement.
Heaven knows how long he’d been searching for the man.
If he hadn’t found anything soon, he really would have been fired.
Fortunately, Serena Hughes had provided some information that made the search easier.
Though Serena Hughes wasn’t usually much help, he had to admit she’d been a huge help this time.
"While I was looking into Hugo, I followed a lead and found someone named Miles Sinclair. This guy’s a minor celebrity, so there’s a lot of public information on him."
"And what a coincidence, this Miles Sinclair just recently came to Korsyth." Justin added in a gossipy tone, "President Hawthorne, he came to Korsyth looking for someone."
Damian raised an eyebrow, his voice cold as steel. "Who?"
"He’s looking for someone named Cecilia Nathan..." Justin added. "And I suspect the Cecilia he’s looking for is our Miss Cecilia Nathan."
