Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 81: Running into Miles Sinclair
"But this hasn’t been verified yet. It might just be a coincidence."
"There have been too many coincidences lately." Damian Hawthorne looked up, his profound gaze falling on Cecilia Nathan in the kitchen.
Cecilia Nathan had told Serena Hughes before that Hugo was dead.
’This Miles Sinclair... could he be the Hugo she was talking about?’
"Look into Miles Sinclair’s recent schedule."
Justin Bell replied, pleasantly surprised, "I’ve already looked into it, President Hawthorne. Miles Sinclair’s most recent engagement is a jewelry gala. He and his team are attending at the brand’s invitation."
"When?"
"Tonight."
After hanging up, Damian Hawthorne strode into the kitchen.
Barely ten minutes had passed, and Cecilia Nathan had already finished cooking all the dishes.
Seeing Damian Hawthorne approach, Cecilia Nathan didn’t stop what she was doing.
"Accompany me to a gala tonight," Damian Hawthorne said, his voice low as the words left his thin lips.
Cecilia Nathan shot him a glance. "It wouldn’t be appropriate... and I don’t have time."
"Accompany me to this gala, and starting tomorrow, you won’t have to come here to cook anymore. How about it?"
Cecilia Nathan paused what she was doing and asked suspiciously, "Really?"
’Coming here to cook every day is torture for me.’
’Liking Damian Hawthorne is one thing, but being willing to stay here is another matter entirely.’
"I need to buy some jewelry. This gala happens to be focused on jewelry, so you can come with me and help pick some out."
Hearing that he was buying jewelry, Cecilia Nathan frowned slightly.
"Are you buying jewelry... for Selina Nathan?"
Damian Hawthorne put his hands in his pockets. Watching her coolly, he lowered his voice. "You pay a lot of attention to Selina Nathan. I don’t recall you being this concerned about Serena Hughes before."
Cecilia Nathan’s heart skipped a beat. She said in a low voice, "Selina Nathan kidnapped me. Of course I’m going to keep a close eye on her."
Hearing the word "kidnapped," Damian Hawthorne’s smile vanished.
’Selina Nathan’s hostility toward her is completely baffling.’
’I haven’t even found a reason for the kidnapping.’
Thinking of how Selina Nathan had agreed to let him marry into her family, Damian Hawthorne’s expression turned cold. "This Selina Nathan... there’s something off about her."
Cecilia Nathan raised an eyebrow in surprise.
’I didn’t expect Damian Hawthorne to be suspicious of Sharon Quincy, too.’
’But on second thought, it made perfect sense. Who was Damian Hawthorne? He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing who had dominated the business world for years.’
’Sharon Quincy’s actions were all so clumsy they were cringe-worthy.’ 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
But Cecilia Nathan didn’t expose Sharon Quincy’s identity.
’If I exposed her now, my own identity would be revealed as well.’
"I’ll go with you, but you have to keep your word. Starting tomorrow, I won’t be coming here anymore."
...
The jewelry gala was held at the largest seven-star hotel in Korsyth.
In the Sky Lobby, radiant lights shimmered as people in various formal gowns and suits milled about.
In the center of the hall was a performance stage where a few well-known singers were featured.
Behind the main hall, several handsome men were sitting scattered around a large dressing room.
Miles Sinclair pushed away the hand that was drawing his eyebrows. "Not too heavy."
’At some point, the men in show business had become obsessed with wearing heavy makeup.’
’Heavy makeup made one’s features look more defined on camera, but he didn’t like it.’
Miles Sinclair’s manager walked over. "It’s too light. The brand requires heavy makeup. It’s the only style that matches their jewelry."
"Then they should have hired a woman for the endorsement, not me." Miles Sinclair smiled faintly, but though he was smiling, his voice was cold. "I came to Korsyth to record a show, not to entertain a bunch of rich and powerful people."
"Oh, Hugo, keep your voice down!" The manager was so anxious he was on the verge of tears. "This isn’t an ordinary gala, it’s a jewelry exhibition! Any random piece of jewelry here is worth tens of millions. You get a huge commission for every piece sold. If you run into a wealthy madam, it’s even possible she’ll buy out the entire brand line you’re endorsing!"
"In a place like this, money is nothing; ’face’ is what matters most," the manager pleaded earnestly. "Hugo, you have to show the brand your value!"
"Yeah, Hugo, you usually have the most female fans. If some rich lady buys out your jewelry line today, it’ll take a lot of pressure off us this month," a team member chimed in, trying to persuade him.
Within the entire group, Miles Sinclair was the best-looking, and his singing and dancing skills were top-notch. He was the core member of the team.
In other words, without Miles Sinclair, the group could disband at any moment.
Unfortunately, Miles Sinclair just couldn’t learn to suck up to the money, otherwise his path to stardom would have been much smoother.
"Stop pressuring him. From what I’ve seen, our Hugo only ever smiles when he’s with Cecilia Nathan."
"Too bad that Cecilia Nathan isn’t some rich madam. Sigh, forget buying jewelry, I bet it’s difficult for her to even get into a place like this."
They went back and forth, teasing Miles Sinclair.
...
Outside the main banquet hall, Cecilia Nathan stood in a simple white long dress, clutching a small evening bag.
Damian Hawthorne wore a white suit. With his dark eyelashes, weary expression, and exquisitely sculpted features, he looked both languid and alluring.
A staff member in uniform politely guided them to a sofa.
"Mr. Hawthorne, this is the roster of the celebrities appearing today," the staff member said, handing a booklet to Damian Hawthorne.
Damian Hawthorne glanced sideways at the roster, bent his elbow slightly to take it, and flipped through it out of boredom before handing it to Cecilia Nathan. "Take a look."
Cecilia Nathan waved her hand dismissively. "I’m not interested in celebrities."
When she was young, she’d had a crush on a male celebrity. Her father later had that celebrity perform a private concert at their family company.
Back then, Linden Nathan had told her that if she liked any celebrity, he could have them come to their home for a concert.
Ever since then, she had never been a fan of any celebrity again.
Especially after realizing the extent of her family’s wealth and seeing those same celebrities fawning over Linden Nathan, she lost all interest in the entertainment industry.
’So-called stars and actors... it was all just a job.’
’When faced with immense wealth, they had to bow their heads, no matter how noble they appeared on television.’
Linden Nathan’s grand gestures had disillusioned her with the entertainment industry from a very young age.
"The roster includes the jewelry endorsed by the celebrities. Don’t forget, you’re here today to help me pick out merchandise." Damian Hawthorne’s hand didn’t move; the roster remained suspended in mid-air.
The light was dim. Damian Hawthorne’s face was expressionless as he narrowed his eyes, waiting for Cecilia Nathan to take the roster.
After a moment of silence, Cecilia Nathan obediently took the roster.
Damian Hawthorne’s dark eyelashes lowered as his gaze fell on her fair hands.
Her skin was fair and clear, her fingers neatly manicured, looking almost translucent under the lights.
Cecilia Nathan moved her fingers and turned to the first page.
When she saw a certain name, Cecilia Nathan’s gaze froze, and she unconsciously paused on it for a few seconds.
Damian Hawthorne didn’t miss her expression. He turned to the staff member beside them and asked, "This one, Miles Sinclair. Where is he now?"
