Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 67: I Know Who Hugo Is
In a daze, Cecilia Nathan heard the sound of a conversation outside.
"You look like him. You can get close to her, make her fall in love with you." Sharon Quincy’s voice was mocking.
Cecilia Nathan was already awake. She had come to on a bed.
She didn’t dare open her eyes, keeping them shut, but her ears were alert, taking in every word from beyond the door.
"Aren’t you afraid her family will come after you for kidnapping her? This is abduction. It’s illegal," the man’s voice said, sounding weary.
Cecilia Nathan’s eyes narrowed slightly, and her palms tightened into fists.
’This man’s voice sounds familiar.’
Cecilia Nathan racked her brain but couldn’t place it, so she just kept listening.
Sharon Quincy said sinisterly, "So what? You have no idea the way Damian Hawthorne looks at her. I’d say she’s a bigger threat than Serena Hughes ever was."
"Just who exactly did you kidnap?"
"If you’re so curious, why don’t you just go see for yourself?" As Sharon Quincy finished speaking, the doorknob turned softly, and someone walked in.
The moment he saw Cecilia Nathan, the man’s surprised voice rang out. "It’s her?"
Cecilia Nathan was wearing a long dress, her dark hair splayed across the bed like seaweed. Her skin was fair, her features as delicate as a doll’s.
"You know her?" Sharon Quincy asked, then looked at the man beside her with amusement. "You’re the top guy in your line of work now. You should be able to win over any woman. She’ll be no problem for you. Good luck. She’s all yours."
Sharon Quincy quietly glanced at Cecilia Nathan, who was lying on the bed.
’She never planned on killing anyone, nor did she want to humiliate them.’
’This is a society governed by law, and after all, she was currently using the identity of "Selina Nathan."’
’But this Cecilia Nathan was dangerous.’
’She had to make her pay a price.’
"She chased after Damian Hawthorne for so long. She’s not going to fall for me," the man’s voice was laced with self-mockery.
Although he was handsome enough among ordinary people, in Cecilia Nathan’s circle of the wealthy, he didn’t even come close.
"Don’t be so insecure... You should know, women these days love a pretty boy like you." Sharon Quincy pinched the man’s cheek, then left smugly.
The door slowly closed, and the man walked over to Cecilia Nathan.
"I know you’re awake."
The man’s voice made Cecilia Nathan freeze. Her lashes fluttered open, and the moment she saw him, her face filled with astonishment.
"Finn Hawthorne?!"
...
"What did you say? Selina Nathan and Cecilia Nathan disappeared together?"
Serena Hughes shot to her feet in astonishment upon hearing the news.
Ever since she’d found out where Cecilia Nathan lived, she had secretly placed a pinhole camera not far from her building.
By placing the camera in the public hallway, even if Cecilia Nathan discovered it, there was nothing she could do.
She’d had someone keeping an eye on Cecilia Nathan and Selina Nathan. She had been nervous when she learned Selina had gone to find Cecilia, but she never expected to hear this kind of news so soon.
’What in the world is the relationship between those two...?’
Remembering the ambiguous things Cecilia Nathan had said to Selina Nathan, Serena Hughes frowned, her heart filled with suspicion.
’She had a feeling that Cecilia Nathan knew this Selina Nathan.’
’But Selina Nathan didn’t seem to know Cecilia Nathan at all.’
Thinking about how both of their surnames were Nathan, Serena Hughes’s heart skipped a beat.
’Is this a coincidence?’
’There weren’t many people in the world with the surname Nathan, but there weren’t exactly few, either.’
’Cecilia Nathan’s family background must be terrible; otherwise, Frances Bennett wouldn’t have looked down on her for so long.’
At this thought, Serena Hughes’s anxiety subsided.
By this time, Fiona Sinclair had returned to the Sinclair family estate. Seeing Serena Hughes looking distracted, she spoke in a serious tone, "What are you still moping about here? Your future mother-in-law is already treating that young lady from the Nathan family like her own daughter-in-law."
She had originally planned to announce the relationship between Serena Hughes and the Hawthorne boy at the Bennett family’s banquet, but Selina Nathan’s appearance had completely shattered their plans.
Especially that Frances Bennett, who had said she didn’t want to announce their relationship right now.
Having been in the business world for so many years, how could she not know what Frances Bennett was thinking?
’It was nothing more than Frances having taken a liking to that girl from the Nathan family.’
’Even though the girl was only average-looking, Frances Bennett was utterly smitten with her.’
On one hand, she detested Frances Bennett for doing this, but on the other, she understood her reasoning.
If she were in the same position, she would also want to form a marriage alliance with the Nathan family.
Unfortunately, her own son was a disappointment who refused to marry or have children, which meant she now only had Serena as a grandchild—and one with a different surname at that.
"Grandma, I may be prettier than Selina Nathan, but my family background really can’t compare to hers..." Serena Hughes lowered her head, her voice thick with insecurity.
Seeing her like this, Fiona Sinclair sighed, her tone softening. "Don’t build others up by putting yourself down. Our Sinclair family is nothing to scoff at."
"Fortunately, Damian Hawthorne has deep feelings for you, or else he wouldn’t have proposed."
As Fiona Sinclair’s words fell, Serena Hughes’s heart stuttered, and her face flushed red.
Fiona Sinclair didn’t know the full story behind the proposal.
’She had thought everything would be revealed today and she’d be humiliated at the banquet, but she never expected Frances Bennett to refuse to acknowledge her status.’
’This was actually a good thing for her.’
"I heard that Damian Hawthorne has been looking for someone recently, but he can’t find any information." Fiona Sinclair smiled faintly, a strange light gleaming on her wrinkled face. "If you can help him, you’ll be able to prove your worth."
Serena Hughes tensed. "Can you find him, Grandma?"
"Anything can be found if you spend enough money." The corners of Fiona Sinclair’s mouth lifted in a benevolent smile. "I believe his name is Hugo."
"Hugo?" A hidden memory began to stir within Serena Hughes.
’Hugo... She felt like she’d seen that name somewhere before.’
Suddenly, it hit her.
’In that diary!’
She had once found a beautiful diary and flipped through it. That was where she had seen the sheet music for "Eye of Love."
But only the first part of the score was written down.
She had also read other entries in the diary, and it seemed to have mentioned someone named Hugo.
’It looked like she would have to find that diary again.’
"Grandma, I know who this Hugo is," Serena Hughes said with a brilliant smile.
’If she remembered correctly, Hugo was the person the diary’s owner was in love with.’
’Since Damian Hawthorne was so desperate to find Hugo, she would give him the diary as a gift.’
At that moment, Damian Hawthorne was listening to his assistant’s report.
"President Hawthorne, there’s no connection between Miss Cecilia Nathan and Selina Nathan. At least, nothing we can find through official channels."
"’Can’t find anything’ again?" Damian Hawthorne let out a laugh of pure frustration.
Cecilia Nathan’s background was unclear, Hugo was nowhere to be found, and anything related to Cecilia was a dead end.
"President Hawthorne... Do you think Miss Cecilia Nathan might have some powerful backer? Otherwise, how could we come up with nothing?" Justin Bell was baffled as well.
The Hawthorne family’s information network was extensive; investigating a person should have been a simple matter.
But everything about Cecilia Nathan was almost completely sealed off.
Before, one could say that Cecilia Nathan’s identity was pure and her background simple, but it was *too* simple.
Whose file was ever as blank as a clean sheet of paper?
"A powerful backer..." Damian Hawthorne was rolling a string of Agarwood Beads in his hand. Their dark, glossy surface emitted a unique fragrance that usually calmed him, but now it couldn’t quell the rage burning in his heart.
Ever since Cecilia Nathan had walked out of the Hawthorne residence, walked away from him, everything had spun out of his control.
The Cecilia Nathan of the past had clung to him like a vine, but after leaving him, other men had started to flock to her.
Thinking of Finn Hawthorne and the other men who had hit on Cecilia Nathan at the banquet, Damian Hawthorne’s lazy eyes gradually grew sharp.
"President Hawthorne, do you think... that powerful backer... could it be Hugo?" Justin Bell ventured, mustering his courage.
Neither Cecilia Nathan’s background nor Hugo’s could be investigated. Didn’t that prove that this Hugo was no ordinary person?
Damian Hawthorne lowered his eyes, his palm tightening slightly. With a sharp CRACK, one of the beads shattered.
