Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Rejection

"What?"

I look at my father with my jaw dropped open.

"Please tell me this is a joke."

My father shakes his head and says.

"No. This is not a joke. The king did not force you to marry or be her betrothed but asked you to think about his proposal."

"What does the Vortigern family get from this marriage?"

"Our help."

"What?"

My father takes a deep breath and says.

"Monsters overrun the Vortigern Duchy, and they need someone’s help to ensure their territory is not gone. The situation worsens, and Eleanor must go to the neighboring kingdom for her safety."

"And they want us to help them kill all those monsters? Are they stupid? They are the reason why this event happened in the first place."

"I know, and I agree with you. They take away your left hand and dare to ask us for help for the trouble they create?"

My mother nods in agreement, and I hear her hiss at the mention of the loss of my left arm. I look at my father once again and say.

"What does the king get from this ’alliance’?"

"Territory. As you know, the Vortigern Duchy is near our kingdom."

"But there are two more territories that separate our territory and theirs."

"Yes. Eleanor manages to talk her way through this alliance, and they are willing to betray the Gokuya Kingdom for aid in the form of food and fighters."

"So the same?"

"Pretty much, yes."

I think about it for a few seconds and say.

"I will think about it. However, I don’t think I will accept it."

"I see. That is what the king wants. He wants you to consider it and let Eleanor stay here for a few days."

"What? She stays here? In Shadowfall City?"

"Yes."

I look at my father for a few seconds and say.

"I think that is a bad idea. Not because I hate her or anything. She has not done anything to me, but the people in this city will see her as a devil or something. Her life will be miserable."

"And that is another reason why it is not good to have you marry her. The Southern People will think of you negatively when they learn that you are marrying the daughter of the man that takes your left arm."

"I know. That is a problem. That is why I only think about it and quickly dismiss it. Father, can you tell the king that we did not want her? Not because we hate her but because we are afraid of what will happen to her if she goes to the South."

"I will send an urgent letter to the capital city. We cannot have another problem with the monsters still roaming around."

"Thank you, Father."

"Not a problem, Gwyn. It is my duty to think about your happiness. You have been through a lot lately, and now I want you to have a happy life from now on."

I smile at him and give him a hug.

"Ah! Not fair! Me too! Do you hate your mother, Gwyn?"

"How can I hate you, Mother? Come on."

"Yay!"

I smile and hug her even tighter. After hugging her for a minute, I look at my father and say.

"So, is there anything else, Father?"

"Ah, there is one more."

"Yes?"

"The Baxter Family sent someone here."

"Oh?"

"They heard about us using our money to buy food from other places and decided to help us by sending many caravans full of food."

"I see. Who will they send? Baxter Family’s Castellan?"

"No. Silvanna Baxter, the heiress of the Baxter Family."

"Oh? Silva coming here, huh?"

"Ara~ Silva, huh?"

I sigh a little at the playful voice my mother uses. She will start to tease me from now on, won’t she?

"Stop it, dear. Our son cannot handle your teasing. Do you still remember how he started running after you teased him by calling Catharina her pet name?"

"Fufufufu~ You are right. I will hold myself until she comes here, and then I will start once again."

I can only sigh as the two of them enter their own world and ignore me.

People thought the two of them were the opposite in behavior, but they were always compatible. On the outside, my father is this stoic warrior that focuses on the battlefield, while my mother is a kind and bubbly woman who is always smiling. Many people do not know about it, but my father is as much a prankster as my mother. They are truly a partner matched by heaven.

I can only sigh and decide to break the reality bubble around them.

"Anyway! When will they come? And what is the reason you tell me this?"

"Right! They should arrive tomorrow morning. I tell you this because I want you to take her around Shadowfall City. Lord Baxter already asked me to let heiress Silvanna explore our territory."

"That means..."

"Yup. Take her to another city as well. You will take her to the Blackmore and Weepingmoor cities as well."

Well, I don’t mind taking her around the other cities as well.

"Sure. I can do that."

"Good. Anyway, that is all I want to tell you. Please don’t go and join the hunting party. Rest and have fun. Let the others take care of the monster outside the Shadowfall."

"Fine. I will not join the hunting team this time."

"Good."

Seeing there is nothing more, I leave my father’s office and walk to my room. I sit on the bed and think about what I should do now because I am unable to join the hunting team. I think for a few seconds and open up a portal to my guild base. I think I can do some experiments.

|Eleanor Vortigern - Heiress and Head of Vortigern Duchy|

I look to the ceiling and release a sigh. I know this will come to this, but I cannot help but hope for it. Even the most honorable people have a limit, and when the enemy kingdom summoning monsters to win a war is already past the line.

I want to tell them we did not get involved in that mess, but a person from my father’s personal unit changed into monsters and the chance of saying that word disappeared into thin air.

I don’t know why Father wants to get involved in that mess, but for some reason, he is willing to get involved and even willing to turn one of his most trusted captains to change into a monster.

I’m not a master of war or even understand the depth of war, but I know that allying with monsters is not good or even changing oneself into monsters.

What makes it even worse, they lost. The winner is the one that can change history or information. If they win, they can hide the deed of summoning monsters or becoming one, but they are losing, losing a lot.

Thousands of elite soldiers die in a trap, and now the one defending the Gokuya Kingdom is the peasant with a spear in hand.

It gets even worse as we know that the Mad King decided to sacrifice a city with all the people inside to summon the biggest monster wave in history. That news spread to the entire kingdom very fast. Some of the nobles did not believe that news, but their belief broke when massive monsters destroyed the cities of Gokuya Kingdom one by one.

Among those millions of monsters, one stands out. It was a humanoid creature with white skin and two massive horns on its head. Surrounding the horn is a miniature storm. It is twenty meters tall, and each step it takes creates a small crater on the ground.

This creature’s ability to create a small void crack to summon even more monsters makes it dangerous. Alongside that ability, it has immunity over lightning and fire while summoning a massive lightning bolt that can easily destroy walls. It was a disaster.

The last time I heard about that creature, the best magician in the kingdom sealed its movement by sacrificing more people. However, that sacrifice will be useless as the magician selling its movement says it will not last long.

In a matter of another week or month at the latest, the humanoid monster will get out of the seal and wreak havoc once again.

My father’s trusted man and my surrogate uncle say there is only one person who can beat that monster, Gwyndolin Alexander Cunningham, the heir of Cunningham County.

However, he is also the one who lost his left arm to my father’s last attack. That alone will cross the line, but the king assured me that the Cunningham Family, or especially Gwyndolin, would not care about it.

The people in Shadowfall City are different, however, as they see him as some sort of messiah if what the king says is true.

Now with the letter from the South coming and the Cunningham family not wanting my proposal, which I know is outrageous, it only leaves me with one thing. I get up and look at my loyal servant and friend.

"Natalie, we will start plan B. We will sneak to Cunningham County."
