Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Bad News

|Catharina von Xenotra - Heiress of Baron Xenotra|

I release a huge sigh of relief after the last monster is done. So this is war, huh? The constant fight and constant casting of spells make me exhausted. Even when we are on the top of the tallest tower, I still fight in close combat.

There are many monsters that can sneak into the tower and try to wreak havoc. Lucky for me, each unit has something that Gwyn calls a Sensor. They are the people who are sensitive to magic and know when monsters get close to them, even when the monsters are invisible.

Without them, the people on the tower will be long dead.

When Gwyn gave me a short sword, I thought he wanted it to be an emergency weapon, but I use it often in battle. I think I can count at least seventy monsters that manage to sneak past the formation and reach the tower I stand on.

I can see the blood of the monsters coat my sword and change its silver color into deep red, the color of blood.

This thing is something that keeps me alive in the fight. I look at broken shoulder pads and sigh a little. An Invisible monster manages to sneak on us and break my shoulder pads. That little shit managed to pierce it and bite my flesh.

Lucky for me, there is a healer in my team.

"Cat! Are you okay?!"

I look down the tower and see Jon shout at me with a worried expression. That man... Does he not see how his body is full of injuries?

"I’m fine, Jon!"

After hearing that, he releases a sigh of relief and nods his head. He is about to say something, but one of the healers under Sonia’s command drags him away to the healing tent. I chuckle a little at his protest.

"Here"

I look back and see one of the magicians give me a canteen full of water. He is the leader of the magician group in this tower. He is my captain in this battle.

"Thank you."

"Not a problem, lass. Is this your first battle?"

"What gives it away?"

"Your hands are shaking."

I look at my hands and notice it is shaking.

"That is normal, lass. Don’t think of it as you being weak. You are strong and even manage to kill two or three monsters alone before they can reach the other mages."

"I don’t do much."

"Hah! That is a good one, lass. Your magic is great. Your control over magic is something that many of my men can learn. Your mana reserve might not be on the high end, but your control compensates for it."

This is my chance! I have been wondering how to increase my mana reserve. In the game, you can level up but in real life... I don’t know.

"Can I ask how to increase my mana reserve?"

"Training. Just like a muscle, the mana core can grow when you put pressure on it by using it constantly and making it work hard. Spend your mana by releasing it into the air to the point of almost depletion and rest. Keep doing this, and your mana core will grow in size, and in turn, your mana reserve will also grow."

"How?"

I already suspect this is how you increase your mana reserve, but I did not know how. The only thing I can do is cast spells for hours.

"Right. I always forget that young master Gwyndolin is the one creating this technique."

"What technique?"

"Come to the training ground tomorrow, and I will teach you."

"I can’t do it tomorrow, but the day after, I can do that."

"Good enough for me. Come when you can."

"Of course."

"Good. Anyway, you should go down and go to the healing tent. While we know a few healing spells, the one in the healing tent knows more."

"I will. Thank you for your time."

"Don’t mention, lass."

After saying one last goodbye, I get down the wall using the stairs because I don’t want to jump down a ten meters tall tower. I’m not a fighter, so my bones are weaker than theirs.

After a minute of walking, I get out of the tower and start to walk to the healing tent. A few minutes later, I arrive inside the healing tent, where I can see Veronica and Jon inside the tent drinking potions.

When they see me, they quickly drink all the potion and shout as one.

"Cat! Are you okay?!"

I can only giggle at their behavior. They still worried about me even though they had more injuries than me.

"I’m doing fine, Veronica, Jon."

I look at one of the healers who walk to me to give me a potion. I thanked her and drank the potion. Hmmm, not bad. All the potions I drink taste bitter, and this potion is the same. However, this potion is not too bitter and has an okay aftertaste, unlike the other healing potion.

After drinking the potion, I feel my body get better, and the tiredness starts to disappear.

After drinking the potion, the healer nods and lets me go to my companion.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has been a week since the monster attack, and after seeing no more monsters coming at us, my father decides to search the area before letting the citizens return to their homes. I already did my part yesterday, and now it is Jullian and his unit to explore the Southern Territory.
Speaking of Southern Territory, Cunningham County is not the only one to get attacked by the monsters. The most affected by this monster wave are the Lionheart and Tarrow territory. We even need to send some of our men to help them.
It might sound stupid because they betrayed us, but my father decided to spare the rest of their family as the two houses’ heirs were already dead in the battle against us. The only people left are the small children and the windowed lady.
My father is not ruthless enough to punish them more than killing their lord and becoming the enemy of the rest of the Southern Lord. We did not like traitors and their families already branded as one for trying to kill their fellow lords while fighting against the enemy.
Especially when my father learned that the lady and the rest of the people that stayed in their territory did not know what Lord Lionheart and Tarrow were planning, they were truly innocent and did not deserve to be punished.
Some of the Southern Lords want them to be killed as well and wipe the Lionheart and Tarrow name out of the Southern Territory. However, my father managed to talk to them to forgive the remnant of the Lionheart and Tarrow family.
Other than those two territories, the rest of the Southern Nobles who border the Gokuya Kingdom manage to hold the monster and start to push the monster back.
We also keep our promise. We feed the people of the Southern Territory by giving them enough food to survive for two weeks.
I feed them using the power of [Druid]. I learned a lot of my talent these past months. I have three types of energy inside of me. The first one is mana, the energy that lets me create many types of spells that can achieve a supernatural effect. This energy is also the fuel for all of my spells that I learn from this world or the one coming from the Second Life.
The second one is Druid’s Energy, which lets me control the plant without casting a spell or anything. However, I did not have much of this type of energy. To compensate for the food, I need to use this energy every day to boost plant growth and yield when it is time to harvest and slowly grow it. However, I can only use this energy up to a hectare of land filled with small plants like rice and wheat.
The third one is the most mysterious one and the one I did not know the use of. The third one is Astrologian’s Energy; to this day, I do not know what kind to use this energy for.
Anyway, I can feed the South using Druid’s Energy. Well, I cannot say I’m the only one doing it because my father still uses family money to buy more food. Luckily for us, my power cut that expense by quite a lot—more than half.
I snap from my thoughts when I arrive in front of my father’s office. I knock on the door and hear my father’s voice calling me inside. I open the door and see my father and mother waiting for me inside the office.
"Father, do you call me?"
"I do. Please take a seat."
I sat in front of him and saw that the situation was so serious that even my mother did not smile.
"Father?"
My father takes a deep breath and says.
"We get a letter from the king, and it involves you and us."
"What is it?"
My father looks me right in the eyes and says,
"The king wants to betroth you with Eleanor Vortigern, the daughter, and heiress to Charles Vortigern."
I can only look at my father and utter a single word.
"What?"
