I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 27: Shifting the Blame?
"What could possibly be more important than the divorce? Grace Winslow, what are you trying to do?"
Caleb Forrest panicked the moment he saw Grace’s determined stance.
Issues with personal conduct were taken very seriously back then.
If Grace brought up his indiscretions to the factory director, it would almost certainly affect his upcoming promotion.
After all, one’s personal conduct was a critical part of any performance review.
The old factory director was about to retire. Barring any surprises, he was supposed to be the one to take over the position.
Anxious, he subconsciously reached out to grab Grace.
But before he could touch her, Nolan Winslow grabbed his hand and slammed him against the wall. "Stay put. Don’t you dare lay a hand on her. What do you think you’re doing in broad daylight? Trying to hit my sister?" 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
Caleb Forrest was seething with frustration.
But he was no match for Nolan Winslow.
His face flushed red. "Let go of me, Nolan Winslow! Aren’t you afraid I’ll go to your work unit and file a complaint against you?"
"Go ahead, I don’t care. Who’s afraid of you? All you do all day is make threats. Can’t you be more of a man?" Nolan wasn’t the least bit scared.
He hadn’t gotten his position through connections; he was a skilled technician with real ability.
His work unit was desperate to keep him.
If he really left, there were plenty of other factories and units eager to poach him.
Seeing Nolan’s brazen confidence, Caleb felt a knot of frustration twist in his gut.
Grace had already reached the factory director’s office.
The director’s surname was Osborne. Rumor had it he was originally from the capital and was known for being exceptionally fair.
Grace knocked on the door and only entered after receiving permission.
When he saw Grace, Oscar Osborne paused for a moment before asking, "Miss, can I help you with something?"
"Hello, Director Osborne. I’m here to formally report Caleb Forrest for abuse of power for personal gain," Grace said in a clear, crisp voice.
Hearing this, Oscar Osborne’s expression immediately turned serious.
Outside the door, Caleb Forrest heard her words and began to struggle frantically, but he couldn’t break free from Nolan’s grip.
"Nolan Winslow, let go of me! You can’t let Grace spout such nonsense—she’ll ruin me! Does she really intend to divorce me and never see me again for the rest of her life?"
His eyes were bloodshot. He truly couldn’t understand how things had escalated to this point.
’Besides, when have I ever abused my power for personal gain?’
Ever since he became vice-director, he had worked diligently every single day, never daring to slack off in the slightest.
The commotion outside caught Oscar Osborne’s attention. He glanced toward the door. "Who’s out there?"
Nolan Winslow released Caleb Forrest.
Caleb Forrest scrambled into the office.
He shot Grace a vicious glare before explaining, "Director Osborne, I am so sorry. This sort of thing should never have been brought before you. It’s just that..."
"This... this lady is my wife. We’ve been having some disagreements lately, and she wants to divorce me. That’s why she’s come here spouting nonsense to vent her personal anger."
Hearing this, Grace let out a cold laugh. "Caleb Forrest, you’re not that important."
"Director Osborne, the factory was hiring for an accounting position. I interviewed for it, passed both the written test and the interview, and even received a job offer from the personnel department telling me to start this week."
"I came down with a high fever and was hospitalized for a week with pneumonia, so I missed my start date. However, I had someone inform them in advance, and they said they were willing to wait until I recovered."
"But he, on his own authority, gave the job that should have been mine to someone else."
"Ivy White needs this job more than you do! Why are you being so vicious? Must you try to steal it from her?"
"She’s already given in to you on every front. Do you really have to push her to her death?" Caleb Forrest looked at Grace, his face a mask of disappointment.
