Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Scram

"Nolan Winslow, if you dare lay a hand on me, I’ll report you to your workplace." Caleb Forrest flinched back a step. But then, feeling a flush of shame at his own cowardice, he stood his ground and said defiantly.

"Go ahead! And while you’re at it, tell everyone just how shameless you are, Caleb Forrest! You’ve got a full bowl but you’re still eyeing the pot. Cheating is one thing, but you actually brought your mistress and illegitimate child home, expecting my sister to wait on them! You shameless bastard! My family must have committed some terrible sin in a past life to end up with a piece of garbage like you!"

"My sister was a good woman when she married you, and now you’re slandering and humiliating her!"

"Even if I lose my job, even if I get sent to a labor farm for ’re-education,’ I am going to beat you to a pulp today!"

Nolan Winslow was already simmering with rage.

After finding out what kind of life his sister had been living with the Forrest family, he wanted to take a knife to Caleb Forrest and that vicious old mother of his.

And yet, here was Caleb Forrest, walking right into the line of fire.

"Brother, there’s no need to dirty your hands over a piece of trash like him." Grace Winslow was genuinely afraid something would happen to Nolan, so she quickly cried out.

Nolan Winslow clenched his fists, his chest aching with fury.

But he couldn’t ignore his sister’s plea.

Caleb Forrest straightened his clothes. Seeing that Grace was still willing to speak up for him, his tone softened. "Grace, I’m still willing to give you a chance. Just come back, and we can go on living like we used to."

"Think it over carefully. I’ll be waiting for you at home. And... Mom really misses you. She’s been talking about you all the time."

Grace Winslow smiled.

’Misses me?’

’Is it just that she’s not used to not having her good-natured, orphaned daughter-in-law around to torment anymore?’

Grace knew exactly what kind of person Cindy Lowell was.

She couldn’t be bothered to engage, not even deigning to reply.

Seeing her attitude, Caleb Forrest shot another glance at Archer Rhys, as if trying to commit the man’s face to memory.

Archer Rhys slowly lifted his gaze. His eyes—cold, deep, and dark—were devoid of any emotion or warmth, yet they made Caleb feel as though he had plunged into a boundless hell.

He saw monstrous killing intent in Archer Rhys’s eyes.

The terrifying intent was so palpable it felt as if the very air around them had grown cold.

He swallowed hard.

"Get out."

The man’s voice was low and detached. The moment he spoke, Caleb Forrest instinctively turned around.

It wasn’t until he was out the door that he realized what he had just done.

Mortified and furious, he wanted to storm back in and get a few harsh words in, but the memory of Archer Rhys’s gaze made him shudder. He hurried away.

Caleb Forrest seethed the entire way home. The thought of Grace being all lovey-dovey with another man behind his back made him want to tear her to pieces.

’How could she do something so shameless?’

’Didn’t she always claim to love him so much?’

’She was always as stiff as a corpse in bed, yet she dared to go fool around with another man!’

’Maybe she was only cold and frigid with him. With other men, who knows how passionate she could be.’

A torrent of such thoughts flooded Caleb’s mind, and once they started, they were impossible to stop.

When he got home, he was surprised to find Ivy White there.

She smiled and came forward to greet him, but her expression dimmed when she glanced behind him and saw no one there. "Caleb, is your wife still not willing to forgive you? Did she not come back with you?"

"How about... I go and explain things to her? I can’t let you two fall out like this because of me. I’d feel guilty for the rest of my life."

Looking at Ivy White, Caleb’s mind was inevitably flooded with the image of Grace and that man in the hospital room, wrapped in a loving embrace. His breathing quickened. He strode forward, pulled Ivy into his arms, and kissed her without a second thought.

’If Grace could mess around with another man, why should he have to keep his distance from Ivy?’

’If she dared to do it, so could he!’
