I Became the Villainess, But My Beast Husbands Can Hear My Mind?!-Chapter 56: The Plan to Protect the Settlement
After the attack by the demon bears, the Vixeria settlement was still being repaired. The people worked day and night, fixing their huts piece by piece. At the same time, they had to hide what happened from the other tribes because they were afraid that if the news spread, others would take advantage of their misfortune.
However, if the settlement were also destroyed by a group of demon wolves, it would be impossible to hide that disaster from the other tribes. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
More than that, some were waiting for the moment when Commander Marlow and the warriors of the Vixeria Tribe fell. Once that happened, they would raid the tribe without mercy.
The reason they were so eager to take over the Vixeria Tribe was because of rumors saying that Loba possessed a mountain of demon beast crystals collected over twenty years.
Those crystals could be used for many things. They could become explosives. They could even be turned into a source of water. Roxanna didn’t know the details, though, since the evil Roxanna had never seen her father’s collection. Most likely, Loba never allowed his reckless daughter to touch something so valuable.
In short, Roxanna couldn’t allow the aggressive demon wolves to attack the settlement.
"There are at least ten of them," Calen said after detecting them through their scent. "We can take them down, but it will probably take a long time since we didn’t bring proper weapons."
Even Azul and Zeir had been forced to improvise earlier, using thick tree roots just to cut off a demon wolf’s head.
They were too focused on what had happened to Calen, so none of them had even thought about bringing real weapons.
Honestly, Roxanna couldn’t help but wonder how her husbands could be so strong when their animal forms were just domesticated animals in her world.
They even could have become warriors—or even replaced Commander Marlow—but because the evil Roxanna wanted to use them as playthings, she never allowed them to stand among the warriors.
"If I remember correctly," Roxanna said slowly, "isn’t there an open void near this area?"
Zeir nodded. "Yes. It’s right behind this rocky mountain. Why?"
Roxanna fell silent for a moment. If the void was that close, then why hadn’t she seen other demon beasts? Why only demon wolves?
Unless... the other demon beasts that came out of the void had immediately fled because this place had become the demon wolves’ territory.
In other words, demon beasts were territorial creatures, and they would kill each other if they entered another’s territory.
"You can tell me if this sounds stupid," Roxanna said quickly, before anyone could stop her.
"But what if we lure them into the cursed forest? Somewhere near other... stronger demon beasts."
She continued right away, afraid they would interrupt her. "If we do that, they’ll be too busy killing each other. And while that happens, we can burn their dead companion and erase our scent."
At least, once the demon wolves started fighting with the other demon beasts in the forest, they could use that chance to cover their tracks and mask their scent by smearing their bodies with something else, like mud, for example.
"That might work," Zeir said after a brief pause, his eyes narrowing as he thought it through. "If they’re busy fighting, they won’t have the time or focus to track us."
"But luring them won’t be easy," Azul added. "Demon wolves don’t chase just anything."
"I can do it," Calen said quietly. Everyone turned to look at him. "My scent is already mixed with theirs. If I move ahead and draw them in the right direction, they’ll follow."
Roxanna’s heart was pounding hard in her chest. Calen had only just regained his freedom, and he had just woken up from that long nightmare.
[I don’t want Calen to face danger by himself.] Her thoughts filled with fear. [What if something happens to him while he’s trying to lure the demon beasts?]
"Calen—"
"We’ll do this together," Calen said, cutting her off gently. His golden eyes locked onto hers. "We both landed on the dead wolf. They’ll track both of us anyway."
Zeir and Azul were the ones who killed the demon wolf, but because they used hardened roots as their weapons, their scent was much fainter.
"I can protect you, so you’ll be fine," Calen reassured her.
Roxanna wasn’t actually worried about that. The only thing she wanted was to make sure Calen wouldn’t go alone.
"It’ll be easier to erase our trail if it’s just me and Roxanna drawing them away," Calen said calmly. "You guys can burn the dead wolf, and maybe wreck their den a little."
Luan twitched his eye, because even the dumbest person in the world knew that Calen was just looking for an excuse to have some alone time with Roxanna.
Still, Luan didn’t say anything because Calen probably needed it.
Zeir finally nodded. "Fine. But don’t be reckless."
Azul crossed his arms. "If you’re not back soon, we’re coming after you."
Cyrus stepped closer to Roxanna and lightly squeezed her shoulder. "Be careful."
After settling on the plan, they finally split up. The others covered their bodies with mud and hid near the demon wolves’ den, staying as still as possible.
Meanwhile, Calen lifted Roxanna onto his back. Then, without hesitation, he let out a loud whistle, clear enough to draw the demon wolves’ attention.
In just a few seconds, the demon wolves turned their heads toward Calen. Their red eyes locked onto him, as if they wanted to burn him alive.
Wolves usually move in packs, and it seemed the same applied to demon beasts. That was why, when one of their kind was killed, the others would try to take revenge.
Right now, they wanted nothing more than to sink their fangs into the bodies of Calen and Roxanna.
"Alright, hold on tight," Calen said to Roxanna.
Without hesitation, Roxanna wrapped her arms tightly around Calen’s neck and closed her eyes as he began to run at full speed.
At least this time, he wasn’t running alone.
