Chapter 57: The One Wolves Fear

[Ding! Ding!]

[Side Mission Activated: Finding Ancient Demon Beast: Demon Fenrir.]

[Reward: Alpha Suppression — Effect: All wolf-type demon beasts within a 5 km radius will suffer instinctive fear and submission.]

Roxanna couldn’t believe her eyes and ears when the system gave her that kind of mission.

First of all, she didn’t even know that Fenrir—the mythical creature from her world—actually existed in this world. But since there were already so many strange things here, she quickly set her shock aside.

[But Demon Fenrir?! Where am I supposed to find something like that?] she complained in her mind. [Still... if I can clear this mission, the settlement will finally be safe from demon wolves.]

The problem was that she had no idea how to find such a creature, especially in a cursed forest filled with all kinds of dangerous beings.

Even the beastman that the evil Roxanna had once sent to throw Azul into Mushy Lake had never returned, so there was a high chance it had died the moment it entered the forest.

"Calen, do you think... we need to find the demon wolves’ superior so we can make sure they won’t escape?" Roxanna asked.

Calen had already heard her thoughts earlier. He nodded right away. "Yes. Most likely Demon Fenrir."

Roxanna widened her eyes. "You know about it?" She hesitated, then asked, "Do you think... we can lead them there?"

Calen took a breath before answering.

"Demon Fenrir is one of the most dangerous demon beasts in this forest," he said honestly. "But the good news is, it has already reached its final stage. It no longer hunts humans."

Roxanna tightened her embrace around Calen. She knew the reason he had so much knowledge about demon beasts was because his former master had often forced him to observe them. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"I’m fine," Calen reassured her. "I’m glad I know these things, so I can give you more information."

"We’ll learn more together later," Roxanna said in a small voice. "But safely. Always safely!"

Calen laughed softly and simply nodded in response. Not long after, Roxanna asked again, "So, do you know where Demon Fenrir lives?"

"I do," Calen said. "It lives in the Dark Ravine. It’s so dark that the only thing we can see from above is darkness."

"But... if Demon Fenrir is at the bottom of the ravine, wouldn’t it be difficult to lure these demon wolves there?" Roxanna asked.

Even though the demon wolves were blinded by their rage for revenge, Roxanna wasn’t sure they would be foolish enough not to realize they were being led toward one of the most dangerous demon beasts in the cursed forest.

Besides, Demon Fenrir must also give off some kind of special scent, one that could be sensed from a great distance.

"Normally, yes," Calen said calmly. "They would notice."

He slowed his steps slightly, eyes focused ahead. "Demon Fenrir’s scent doesn’t spread like other beasts’. The Dark Ravine swallows it. The air there is heavy, and scents don’t flow upward, they sink."

Roxanna blinked. "So they won’t realize where they’re going?"

"They’ll only sense danger once it’s too late," Calen replied. "By then, they’ll already be inside its territory."

He glanced back at her. "And there’s something else."

"What?" Roxanna asked.

"The demon wolves already crossed Fenrir’s boundary the moment they followed us this far," Calen said. "They just don’t know it yet."

A chill ran down Roxanna’s spine.

"That’s why no other demon beasts are around," Calen continued. "They avoid this place. Only the wolves are reckless enough to rush in."

Roxanna swallowed. Not just the demon wolves, she hadn’t noticed it either!

She had been so focused on the chase, on Calen, on the danger behind them, that she hadn’t stopped to think about how strange it was. The forest had grown too quiet. There was no insects, no distant roars, and no movement in the shadows.

"I didn’t notice..." Roxanna murmured.

"That’s normal," Calen said gently. "Fenrir’s territory doesn’t feel like a threat at first. It feels empty."

His voice lowered. "By the time you realize why it’s empty, you’re already inside."

Roxanna held her breath. The air around them felt heavy and unsettling. And yet, for some reason, she wasn’t as scared as she thought she should be.

Still, it was strange. They were standing at the edge of Demon Fenrir’s territory. By all logic, shouldn’t they both be dead already?

[Ding! Ding!]

[Congratulations, Host! Side Mission Complete: Finding Ancient Demon Beast: Demon Fenrir!]

[Reward:

Alpha Suppression — Effect: All wolf-type demon beasts within a 5 km radius will suffer instinctive fear and submission.

+5,000 Spirit Points (SP)]

[Total Spirit Points (SP): 10,400]

Roxanna widened her eyes and immediately hugged Calen more tightly. She hadn’t expected to receive that many Spirit Points, and she knew better than to believe that anything in this world came for free.

If she received that much SP, then it seemed she would have to pay for it in some other way.

Faintly, she heard a low growl. It was deep and unsettling, but her ears still managed to catch it.

"Don’t be scared," Calen said softly. "You’ll be fine."

He didn’t move any closer to the ravine. "We won’t go any further," he continued. "But I need you to do something for me."

Roxanna tilted her head. "What?"

"Smear your blood on a few small stones," Calen said calmly. "Then throw them into the Dark Ravine. If we do that, the demon wolves would follow your blood’s scent."

Calen picked up a few stones from the ground, and Roxanna immediately bit her own arm so she could draw some blood. The demon wolves were still some distance behind them, but they still had to move quickly.

Once they heard the demon wolves’ footsteps getting closer, Calen climbed a tall tree, with Roxanna still on his back.

He waited for the right moment and threw the stones into the Dark Ravine. The demon wolves, unable to sense Fenrir’s scent, ended up jumping into the ravine as well.

A few seconds later, Roxanna heard a deafening growl rise from within.
