Chapter 178: The House From My Past (1)

But Roxanna didn’t answer right away. She was staring at the snow, her mind trembling with memories she thought she had already left behind.

[B-How could this world copy the place where I used to live?] she wondered, her chest feeling tight. [Those cars buried under the snow... I can still see them so clearly in my mind.]

When her ex-husband threw her out of the shelter, the cold wind hit her face without mercy. In front of her, so many cars were half-buried in thick piles of snow, like abandoned toys left behind by the world.

The houses around the shelter were in terrible condition. Many had been looted. Some were so covered in snow that only their rooftops could be seen.

She had only looked at that scene for a short moment before everything ended for her, but some memories don’t need much time to last forever. The last things a person sees before death are not easy to forget.

Then her eyes slowly moved toward the house with blue paint that had almost completely peeled off.

Roxanna froze. [That’s my house...]

Even though she had been locked inside the shelter and was never allowed to return upstairs, she still remembered every detail of her home. Especially because she had seen it one last time before she died.

Back then, the house had already been half-destroyed. It was clear that people had broken in and taken whatever they could. But luckily, no one had known about the shelter hidden underneath. The bandits had searched, taken what they found, and left without realizing there was more below their feet.

But why could she suddenly see her house?

Her husbands were just as confused as she was because this was their first time seeing objects from a modern world. To them, everything looked strange. Calen even thought the half-buried cars were fossils of giant animals that had died long ago.

"Roxanna, are you alright?" Azul asked again. He gently pulled her hands to help her stand properly. Then he brushed the snow off her clothes so she wouldn’t get colder. "Hey, Roxanna."

When she still didn’t react, he snapped his fingers lightly in front of her face. He knew this place looked like her old home, and that made him uneasy. If these were her painful memories, then this place might hurt her again.

"That’s..." Roxanna finally spoke. She raised her hand and pointed at the ruined house in front of them. "That’s my house from my previous world."

Since Roxanna had said it directly, Azul and Calen were finally able to talk about it more openly.

"Your house?" Azul examined the building carefully. "It looks so different from our hut."

Roxanna let out a small, bitter laugh. "Yes. It’s very different."

But the biggest difference wasn’t the shape or the size.

Her old house had always felt cold. Even before the snowstorm destroyed everything, it never truly felt warm. Meanwhile, their small hut was always full of warmth and full of love. No matter how simple it was, it was able to make her smile every day.

"I don’t know why it exists here," Roxanna wondered aloud. "Isn’t this your unconscious mind, Calen?" 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Calen fell silent for a moment. He had briefly wondered whether his unconscious mind had created this place because he had read Roxanna’s thoughts so many times, but honestly, that seemed impossible.

Even if he could hear her thoughts, that didn’t mean he could recreate her entire world so perfectly. After all, this was the first time he had ever seen these strange objects with his own eyes.

"Grr... Grr..."

Mr. Fenrir suddenly let out a low growl and walked toward Roxanna. It pushed her back with its snout, urging her to walk forward toward her house, and it almost made her stumble and fall.

"Hey, stop it!" Azul quickly grabbed the spear that had been thrown to the ground earlier and lightly bonked Mr. Fenrir on the head with the handle. "Stop pushing her like that! You bad dog!"

Mr. Fenrir growled even louder and even tried to bite his spear, but Azul always managed to avoid its bites. Actually, Azul wasn’t even hitting its head very hard. It was more like a gentle bonk.

After all, even though Mr. Fenrir had treated him badly earlier, the giant wolf had never hurt Roxanna. And since his wife had already started to grow fond of Mr. Fenrir, Azul didn’t dare hurt the beast.

"Are you asking me to go inside?" Roxanna asked.

Mr. Fenrir growled again while nodding his head up and down.

"Oh... alright." Roxanna looked at her half-ruined house in front of her with hesitation.

[Why do I suddenly feel scared of that house?] Roxanna wondered inwardly. [Is it because I was tortured there for almost three years?]

Roxanna let out a low sigh. Back when she first bought this house, she had been so happy because it was the first property she owned with her own money. For a moment, she had even believed her life was finally getting better.

But now... she didn’t even want to imagine herself walking into it.

However, since Mr. Fenrir insisted on asking her to go inside, there must be some explanation for it.

[But still... it’s kind of scary.]

When Roxanna was still hesitating to step forward, she suddenly felt Calen and Azul take both of her hands. They held her tightly, as if they wanted to give her some encouragement.

"It looks empty... so maybe we’ll be fine," Calen said, though his voice sounded unsure.

Truthfully, he was still confused. He didn’t understand why Roxanna’s past memories had suddenly appeared in his unconscious mind. But maybe they would find the answer after exploring this strange place.

"Besides... I don’t think we can avoid it," Azul added. "I can’t hear the bell anymore."

Roxanna’s eyes widened. Only then did she realize that she hadn’t heard the bell for quite a while.

[That’s not good...] she thought uneasily. [Is something blocking this place so people outside can’t communicate with us anymore?]
