Chapter 34: Statue

[The Next Day]

In the gentle silence of the Nero Public Library, Mikhail sat with his head slumped down over a book.

He kept on flipping through it without giving much time to read the content.

Kevin, who sat just beside him, frowned when he noticed it. "Quit wasting time." He said. "College screening is just around the corner."

Mikhail paused and let out a sigh. He leaned back on the chair and rubbed his cold face with both hands.

’What am I doing?’

He thought to himself, closing the book titled ’History of Evil.’ He had been going through it in hope of finding any information about the statue.

After what he had ’seen’ on the terrace of the middle school, Mikhail was having a really bad feeling.

’Not to mention that an Artifact of Destruction made me ’see’ that event.’

He rubbed his temples before he straightened his back and looked at Kevin.

"Have you heard anything about the suicides of the students at the art school?" He asked, not hoping for any positive answer.

But to his surprise, Kevin nodded his head. "I did, father told me about it." He replied grimly. "He just wanted to make sure I was safe."

Mikhail asked casually. "Was there anything common between them?"

"Not necessarily." He replied, flipping through the book. "Except being in the same school and having the same teachers, they were all from different worlds."

’...Same teachers, huh?’

Mikhail rubbed his chin as he remembered the man with the sinister smile he had ’seen’ yesterday.

It was pretty clear to him that the man was the one who had manipulated the children into performing a ritual that resulted in their deaths.

’Was that man a teacher at the school?’

Mikhail couldn’t help but wonder, opening the book once again.

He was still in a dilemma about whether to pursue the case or not. It had nothing to do with him and he had no proof to continue with.

’...I will have a look at the school’s teachers and see if I can find him.’

Mikhail had the man’s face engraved in his mind. He was sure he could recognise him at once.

’Though, I still don’t understand why the Artifact of Destruction woke up at that specific time.’

He thought, flipping through the book, albeit slowly this time.

There were four stages to the Artifact, from Stage 3 to Stage 0.

Stage 3 Artifacts were those mostly found in the rifts and had some level of danger. They could mostly affect a single person at a time.

Stage 2 were considered dangerous and using them also had severe effects on the user. They could not be replicated by humans and could affect a small group of people. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Stage 1 were those Artifacts that were extremely dangerous and could affect towns and cities as a whole.

Not much was known about Stage 0 but it was said they could influence an entire continent and sometimes an entire race.

So Mikhail was really curious as to why the Artifact had decided to show him that vision.

’It would have been really good if the church didn’t hoard all the information to themselves.’

He grumbled as his hands paused when he saw a statue’s picture in the book.

It was a statue of a humanoid figure, sitting with one hand raised over its head. It had only a single eye on its entire face and a chain was wrapped around its feet.

’....It’s the same as what I saw in the vision.’

Mikhail thought grimly as he began to read about the statue.

’A statue that was found in the early expeditions of humans within the rift. The statue is said to be a representation of a God from a destroyed civilisation.’

’The statue was said to bring extreme nightmares to the city it was in. Thousands committed suicide under its influence.’

’Later in the rebuilding of humanity, the statue was stolen and was never found again.’

Mikhail leaned back and read the small amount of information he had found again and again.

He was sure what he had ’seen’ was a miniature version of the same statue.

’...A statue that brings nightmares and death.’

It matched with what had happened to the children and Mikhail wasn’t sure how to react.

’Can I consider him an Outer God...He is someone who is outside the ranking system the Creator God made...’

Mikhail thought as he looked at the statue in the book once again.

’There must be an organisation or perhaps a cult behind it...’

He let out a sigh and closed the book. Kevin, who was waiting for it to happen, immediately did the same.

He stood up and stretched his body. "Let’s go play some games!"

Mikhail looked at the time. ’It’s only twelve.’

"Let’s go." Mikhail replied, packing his things. "I am on leave today and I still have some time before school ends."

Kevin revealed a puzzled look. "School?"

"Middle school." Mikhail said, walking towards the door. "I want to look for someone."

Kevin froze in his place and his face contorted in disgust. "They are kids, Mikhail!"

"I am not going after any girls, you hairless monkey." Mikhail replied, immediately understanding his train of thought. "I am going to look for a teacher."

Kevin let out an exaggerated sigh and smiled. "That’s my bro, going after a milf."

"...."

Mikhail felt like he would lose his braincells if he continued talking with him.

He silently walked out of the library and glanced back at the front wall.

The wall which had once been filled with graffiti was now painted black.

’I bet they did it because of the graffiti of the beheaded God of War.’

He thought as they began to walk towards 31st Street, which was known for its entertainment market.

"Where is Methew?" Kevin asked curiously. "I am seeing him less with you."

"Olivia likes to play with him." Mikhail replied with a chuckle. "I just let him be at home."

"Poor guy." Kevin mumbled. "He must be cursing you in his mind."

’...He is cursing everyone to their face though.’

Mikhail thought and chuckled in his heart.

Both of them reached the bus stand and took a mana bus to 31st Street.
