I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 731 - 728 Because I Love You (2)
"Mr. President," the assistant asked again, "are we really not going to make the Peacock River information public?"
Nathan Leafcastle picked up his knife and fork and sliced the egg on his plate in half.
"I’ve made a promise to Vera. Of course, I can’t break my word."
"Well..." Helplessness crossed the assistant’s face. "That would be such a pity."
A cold smile touched Nathan Leafcastle’s lips.
"Just because we won’t disclose the information doesn’t mean others won’t. I only promised Vera that the information wouldn’t be leaked by me. If others want to disclose it, that has nothing to do with me."
Realizing what he meant, the assistant grinned, breaking into laughter.
After taking a taxi to the Ashton Building, Vera Wave found a public phone and dialed Merlin Bradley’s cellphone number.
"I was just looking for you! What happened last night?"
Instead of answering, Vera asked, "Did I leave my bag at your place?"
"It’s here."
"Could you please bring it down for me? I’m at the coffee shop across the street."
"Sure."
About ten minutes later, Merlin Bradley arrived at the coffee shop with Vera’s bag. Seeing Vera sitting by a table, she quickly handed the bag over.
"Vera, what the hell is going on?!"
Vera took her phone out of the bag. Its battery was dead—so dead, it wouldn’t even power on.
"Vera!" Merlin Bradley frowned. "I think you should explain to the BOSS. This kind of news... no man can tolerate it!"
News?! Vera was taken aback. "What news?"
"You don’t know?" Merlin Bradley took out her phone and handed it to Vera. "See for yourself!"
Vera looked at the phone screen to see the headline.
"Young Madam of Ashton in Intimate Chat with President Barker"
There were two pictures underneath. The first showed Vera and Nathan Leafcastle chatting in the loft. The photo was clearly taken surreptitiously from outside; through the window, only their vague side profiles were visible.
In the second photo, Nathan Leafcastle was leaning towards her, making it look as if they were kissing.
The accompanying text was incredibly suggestive. First, it claimed they were "talking and laughing, whispering to each other from time to time," then it alleged they were "kissing from time to time."
Upon seeing the news, Vera was first startled, then anger surged within her. A moment later, however, she felt a sense of relief.
If this scandal could make Kris Cooper give up on her completely, then let the journalists have their fun.
She’d rather he hate her!
"There’s a board meeting today, and the President should be at the office. You can definitely see him if you go now," Merlin Bradley reminded her from across the table.
Vera handed the phone back to her. "I have other things to do, so I’ll get going. If anything comes up, call me."
"Vera!" Merlin Bradley stood up anxiously. "What...what do you mean by this? Are you and the BOSS really having problems?"
"Just stay out of this for now. I don’t want to discuss it." Vera smiled at her. "Goodbye."
Helpless, Merlin Bradley walked Vera out. As Vera got into a taxi and left, Merlin Bradley watched her go, then shook her head and sighed.
A once-perfect couple, first implicated in a death, now entangled in a scandal—what on earth was happening?!
After taking a taxi back to her newly rented apartment, Vera immediately found her charger and plugged in her phone.
Her phone showed several missed calls and messages, all from Merlin Bradley and others, asking what had happened and where she was.
