Chapter 730: Chapter 727 Because I love you (1)

Just as Vera finished speaking, the assistant’s phone rang. After a few words into the call, he looked toward Nathan Leafcastle for direction.

"Mr. President, what do you think..."

Nathan Leafcastle furrowed his brows. Vera stood nearby, watching him anxiously.

She too had lost loved ones and understood his emotions. He was doing all of this simply because he wanted to take revenge on Kris Cooper.

"Brother Nathan, everything I’ve told you is true."

Nathan Leafcastle was silent for a few seconds, then he gave a slight wave of his hand to his assistant. He then raised his gaze to meet Vera’s.

"You must be hungry. I’ve prepared some breakfast for you. Shall we go downstairs and eat?"

He gathered the documents on the table, tidied them casually, and then tossed them into the trash can.

"Don’t worry, this information will absolutely not get out through me."

Seeing him do this, Vera secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

The two of them went downstairs together to the dining room. Nathan Leafcastle brought over the prepared breakfast and placed it in front of her.

It was a lavish Western-style breakfast. However, looking at the golden-brown pan-fried bacon on the plate, Vera felt waves of nausea.

Since becoming pregnant, her morning sickness had been pronounced. She really couldn’t stomach such greasy food so early in the morning.

It was a kind gesture, and she felt bad refusing. She just ate a piece of toast with her milk, avoiding the bacon and any other meat on her plate.

"Why aren’t you eating the eggs and meat?"

"I... I don’t really have much of an appetite."

Nathan Leafcastle picked up his glass of milk and took a sip.

"You and him... what’s going on?"

"Let’s not talk about that." She really didn’t want to discuss Kris Cooper with him. "Where is Miss Janice? I haven’t seen her around."

"She went to Singapore on business. She’ll be back in a couple of days."

"I see." Vera smiled. "When is the wedding?"

"My mother was just buried. I want to... observe a period of mourning for her."

Vera’s smile froze. "Oh, I’m sorry, Brother Nathan. I... I didn’t mean to be insensitive."

"It’s okay." Nathan Leafcastle added more milk to her cup. "I’m slowly getting used to it. Where are you living now?"

"I... I’m temporarily staying at a friend’s place." Vera glanced at her watch and put down her milk cup. "I have some things to attend to, so I should get going now."

"I’ll drive you."

"No, no, really!" Vera hastily waved her hands. "I can go by myself, it’s fine."

Just then, the assistant came in.

"Sir, there’s a phone call for you upstairs."

Nathan Leafcastle didn’t go to answer the phone. Instead, he stood up, took out his wallet, pulled a thick wad of cash from it, and offered it to Vera.

"A hundred will be enough. I’ll pay you back another day!"

She took a single bill from the wad he held, waved it playfully, and then headed towards the entrance hall.

Nathan Leafcastle saw her out the door and watched as she walked down the steps. Then, his voice urgent, he called out.

"Vera!"

Vera paused, looking puzzled. He stepped towards her, reaching out with both hands. Before she could react, he had already embraced her, holding her by the shoulders.

"Thank you for being with me yesterday."

Hearing the deep timbre of his voice, Vera didn’t know how to comfort him. She just raised her arm and gently patted his back.

"Don’t take this too much to heart. We’re still good friends, just like before." Nathan Leafcastle released her and smiled at her. "Take care on your way. Call me anytime if you need anything."

"Alright."

Vera gave him a quick smile, then turned and walked towards the villa’s main gate.

Nathan Leafcastle watched her figure retreat into the distance, then glanced at the small garden nearby. He turned, went back into the room, and took the phone his assistant handed him. Once the call was over, he returned to his seat at the dining table and resumed his breakfast.
