I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 716 - 713: Hide and Seek is Fun, Isn’t It? (2)
After a moment, the Mercedes-Benz hastily drove off. Vera Wave, hiding in an alley and watching it leave, breathed a sigh of relief.
She took her cell phone out of her bag, switched it on, and quickly accessed her inbox to send a text to Isla Hawskin. As soon as the text was sent, the cell phone automatically shut down. It hadn’t been used for a long time, so its battery was already very low.
Shrugging, Vera walked out of the alley. She glanced up at the sun, then brought a hand to her stomach. Having only had a bowl of white porridge that morning, she was now incredibly hungry. Spotting a small restaurant by the roadside, she quickly went in, ordered a meal, and ate ravenously.
When Kris Cooper rushed into the Glimmer CEO Office, Isla had just hung up the phone with Vera. Seeing a shadow flash before her, she looked up in confusion. Before she could discern what was happening, Kris Cooper had already swiped her cell phone.
He checked the call records and saw the number she had just dialed. Kris Cooper asked in a low voice, "Where is she?"
"I...I don’t know."
Kris Cooper bent over, his amber eyes squinting at her face as he enunciated each word carefully, "Where. Is. Vera?"
"I really don’t know. Her phone is switched off, so I couldn’t get through. She only sent me one text message and didn’t say where she is. You can check the messages if you don’t believe me."
Kris Cooper checked her inbox and indeed saw a message from Vera.
"Isla, I’ve made it out of jail successfully. Don’t worry about me; I’ll take care of myself."
After reading the message, Kris Cooper grabbed Isla’s arm. "Was it you who helped with the parole?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"I..." Isla glanced at Tommy Taylor beside her, knowing she could no longer hide this. "Yes!"
"Reason!"
"Reason..." Isla faltered, her gaze flickering away. "That was between her and her lawyer. I just helped her find the lawyer. I... I really... don’t know!"
Kris Cooper clenched his teeth and released her arm. "Settle your accounts and leave. You’re fired."
"You..." Isla was taken aback, then stood up. "Fine, I’ll leave! What’s the big deal? It’s just a job. Do you think Isla Hawskin can’t find another job without Glimmer?"
As she spoke, she began tidying the things on her desk.
Kris Cooper frowned, snatched the pen holder from her hands, and slammed it onto the table. He pursed his lips and then spoke again, "Isla, I beg you."
This time, his tone was no longer strong and domineering but was laced with sorrow and helplessness.
Looking up at the man before her, his face clearly showing signs of exhaustion from his travels, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of compassion.
His recent trip to the United States—what should have been a week’s worth of work—he had completed in five days, a testament to how hard he had pushed himself.
Wasn’t all this for Vera?
"Mr. Cooper, it’s not that I don’t want to tell you. It’s Vera... she asked me not to. I... I don’t know what happened between you two, but I feel... there must be a reason. So... please, don’t force me to betray my friend, okay?"
Nearby, Tommy Taylor took out his phone, listened for a moment, and immediately handed it to Kris Cooper. "It’s the Police Department!"
Kris Cooper took the phone.
"Kris, I just checked. Vera applied for her release on her own. The reason she gave was pregnancy."
Pregnant?!
It took a full five seconds for Kris Cooper to process this.
"Is it...true?"
