Chapter 92: Should we stop for a moment?

Their trail hadn’t been discovered yet so Raymond quickly took out his phone and called Steve.

"We’re almost there." Steve said, with the thought that Raymond was calling to hurry them up but that wasn’t the case.

"Don’t go to the mansion." Raymond said to him. "Head for the mountains. We’ll be heading there."

And without questions, Steve agreed to this.

"Alright."

"We’re going up there?" Ariel asked, pointing at the mountain side that was filled with nothing but greenery and trees.

Raymond kept his phone and looked up the mountain. It wasn’t that far away from where they were and if they could hide there, the twins would definitely not be able to track them.

"We have to hide until my men arrive." He said and she looked at him in disbelief before saying,

"I thought you said you weren’t alone."

"I’m not. I have you." He said and though cheesy, Ariel couldn’t help but feel warm. She really missed him and ended up hugging him.

"I missed you, Sir Raymond." She suddenly said, and though he was surprised that she did that, he hugged her back

"I missed you too, Ariel. I really did." He said, squeezing his arms around her and then lightly stroked her hair. "When we get out of this alive, I have a confession to make."

"What is it?" Ariel asked, breaking the hug.

"Let’s get out of here first." He said, giving a nice smile and she smiled back. Patience was her virtue afterall.

They headed for the mountains stealthily and though the guards were trying hard to find them, they just couldn’t get any lead since they didn’t know for sure where they hid or where they were headed.

"Careful." Raymond warned while helping her to ward off the branch which seemed like a threat to her.

"I’m fine." Ariel said and they kept moving.

The trees were tall, the bushes were thick, yet soft and the guards were apparently super dumb. Just because there were no CCTV cameras around the mansion, they couldn’t use their heads to think.

Well, it was fortunate on Raymond’s side. They would be able to get away without a hitch.

"Are you alright?" Raymond asked and Ariel nodded.

"Yeah, I’m okay." She tried smiling and he smiled back at her.

He continuously asked her how she was doing as they ascended the mountains and she responded positively, feeling touched. She felt like he truly cared for her safety and that made her endurance all this while feel more worthwhile.

Holding firmly on to Ariel’s hand, Raymond led her up the mildly steep mountain till they got far.

Raymond looked back at Ariel. It was the middle of the day and though the branches blocked most of the Sun rays, it was still hot everywhere and she was sweating profusely.

"Should we stop for a moment?" He asked her and just as he suspected, she shook her head and said,

"No, no. I’m fine. Let’s keep going."

Raymond looked at her. She was still so stubborn and for some reason, he felt warm. He squeezed her hand in his and tilted his head to the side.

"I’m glad I finally found you." He said.

"I’m glad to finally get away from that place too." She responded and hugged him. "And don’t worry, I’m really alright. This much sweat is nothing compared to all I’ve..."

Raymond immediately silenced her by pressing his finger over her lips.

"Please, don’t say that."

"What?"

"I know you’ve been through a lot but the more you talk about it, the more it tears me up. I know I shouldn’t try to free myself from the guilt and I can’t really free myself even if I tried but please, stop reminding yourself that you’ve passed through worse. Stop telling yourself that suffering is a part of you so no matter how much you suffer, you won’t feel a thing, because it’s not alright."

Ariel looked at him in shock. What he was saying... She wanted to refute them and justify them but the moment she opened her mouth to speak, she heard his next words.

"From now on, you can cry once you feel even the least bit hurt." She paused and looked him in the eye with shaky eyeballs.

He was smiling with his eyes showing a lot of sincerity and gladness. But at the same time, they reflected pain. His emotions... they were so vivid in his eyes.

When did Raymond start showing his feelings and emotions in his eyes? She wondered.

"Scream once you feel your temper rising. And feel free to kick up a fuss if things don’t go your way." He dropped his hands on her shoulders. "Please, Ariel. This may not be possible but I hope...no, I wish that the little innocence you have left in you will never die. Be a free bird, okay?"

Tears trickled down Ariel’s cheeks. Really, this was no time to cry. This was a really bad time but as much as she wanted to stop herself, she couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down more heavily.

"Sir Raymond." She cried, her voice breaking from choking back on her tears.

"Yes, Ariel. I am here. I will make sure you live the rest of your life without worry and with the warmth and love you deserve." He declared and hugged her once more. "All that happened in the past, are in the past. All the pains, suffering and all the trauma. They may not be easy to erase but I hope to give you a life where you won’t be able to recall any of those awful memories."

Ariel’s eyes widened and she blinked her widened eyes. What was he saying?

"I will help create new memories with you. And not just any memories but memories that when you think back, you will have no choice but to feel warm inside and smile."

She looked him in the eye and he smiled at her, brushing her hair behind her ear.

"All your scars..." His eyes trailed from the scar behind her ear to the wounds all over her body. "... They will fade with time and if they don’t, I will draw stars on them. And so when you look at them, instead of frowning or feeling sad about it, you’ll find it funny and laugh."

Just thinking about it, Ariel chuckled. But she didn’t understand. Why was he telling her all this?

"Sir Raymond, your words sound really weird." She said, "By any chance, did you decide to add a new clause to the contract? I can’t really recall seeing any of this in it."
