I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 229: Jane was a bit lost
Maxwell blinked his eyes. That was unexpected. To think that was what she prioritized at such a moment. He laughed.
"Seriously, you’re not normal," Jane said and turned to Rachael.
She felt it before. Since earlier on, everywhere she went, she would see him. It was like he was keeping her under surveillance.
"No ’thank you’, no problem," Maxwell said with a simple shrug and did not deny that he was following her. Well, he was indeed following her at the request of his dear wife.
Jane shook her head and shook out the creepy feeling he gave her.
"Mr Stein." She called and he sighed. No use trying to hide what was already in the open.
"Let’s talk in the living room." He said and shifted his gaze to Rachael. "You didn’t do anything wrong so you don’t have to look so guilty." He said and kissed her forehead. "Let’s go out."
"I’ll go and find Romeo instead." She said and hopped down from the bed.
They all watched her as she briskly headed for the door with her little legs. She looked up at the uncle at the door and instantly looked away.
"So, is it true?" Jane asked once they were in the living room.
"Yes. Alexa is indeed Ariel." Raymond answered.
"How did you figure that out? I don’t believe you just went ahead to run a test after seeing she was the replica of your dead wife." Jane said. "Was it before you performed surgery on her or after?"
"It was before." Raymond felt like he was being interrogated.
He wasn’t obligated to answer her questions but she was Alexa’s only friend so he should at least do this if he wanted to look reasonable and in his right mind.
"She had frequent headaches. Painful headaches so we ran some tests and Steve found similarities in her blood that matched Paige, Ariel’s cousin." Raymond explained.
"And what if that was a coincidence?" Jane pressed on.
"Yes, that could have indeed been a coincidence, but it could no longer be considered a coincidence after I found out Rachael was my biological daughter." He admitted and she rested her back on the chair.
She did not expect this at all. She thought maybe there had been a bit of spark between the both of them which was why he was going to such an extent.
Or even if there wasn’t a spark, she thought maybe he was treating her so well because she looked like his dead wife when in reality, it was because she was ’that’ dead wife.
She placed her hand on her head.
And it was clear that Alexa had no idea about this since she was still wondering why Raymond was being so good to her.
Knowing Alexa’s character, she probably wouldn’t believe it. She may act like she does on the outside but inside, she would conclude that she was being used as a replacement.
Even while all the facts were clear, she would still doubt it all.
She had been through so much that she wouldn’t want to believe just anything anymore. Even with facts. Because of facts, Serena had been able to chain her life for five years.
And all, while doubting all this, she would keep up that smiling face of hers. That smiling face that held suffering beneath it.
If one could remove the mask of that smiling face, one would see just how many tears she was trying so hard to hide.
She would end up killing herself with those doubtful thoughts and uncertain emotions so it was best if she didn’t discover this truth.
She was with Raymond in this.
"Okay, but there’s still one thing I can’t understand." She said and her eyebrows furrowed. "What are you doing here?" She asked Maxwell who had been silently sitting next to her.
"Hm, I can’t seem to remember." He said with a sarcastic tone. "Anyway, why mind me? Go ahead and ask whatever it is that’s bothering you."
Jane clicked her tongue. Was he following her? He had a wife, didn’t he? Or was there something he wanted from her?
"Anyway," she decided to ignore his existence. "... About Serena, I didn’t know before but after the party, I found out she’s a Stein." She said, "Let’s use the word, she was because she’s made a completely different name for herself elsewhere and that’s why I couldn’t tell she was connected to you from the beginning."
"Does she have that many connections in Germany?" Raymond asked and she nodded.
"Her name is big and I assume she achieved all that without using the Steins name, if not we all would’ve known who she was. Even the hospital I work in is affiliated with her cooperation." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Raymond thought about this for a while. It was going to be very tricky to bring her down. Since he didn’t know to what extent her influence spread, he needed to be cautious.
Even for him, Serena was no way for. She knew that very well and that was why she had no problem attending the event the other night.
"Wow, you knew she was such a big deal yet you wanted to go head-on and strangle her," Maxwell remarked. "You’re something out of a comic book."
"And you’re something out of a children’s drawing." She fired back.
"Are you trying to say I am innocent?" He asked which sent shivers down her spine.
Innocent her foot! He was nowhere near innocent. Even she knew that.
"When I said you were something out of a children’s book, I meant the humans who have deformed bodies and no brains. You’re just creepy." She explained. "Besides, I was angry. Sernmena is a bitch who needs to die."
"I believe you and I are on the same page there," Maxwell said and she shook her head. He snickered and put on airpods so he wouldn’t hear the rest of their boring talk.
"I know this is too much to ask but," Raymond brought up. "Can you go back to your country and investigate for me?"
Jane was a bit lost. What did he mean by investigate? And she wasn’t a detective so how was she going to do that?
"I would love to help but I honestly don’t have any idea what you want me to do," Jane said.
"You won’t be doing much. All you have to do is help get the list of affiliated companies Serena works with. With that, we can roughly gather information on her connections." Raymond explained and she poked her head.
It was easy on the ear but she knew it wasn’t going to be easy. She’s only ever beaten up guys who misbehaved and held a scalpel for surgery.
She wasn’t that knowledgeable as to get in and out of a classified place without being found out.
If she attempted, she would immediately get caught and be thrown into jail.
While she was still contemplating this, Raymond said,
"You won’t be going alone." She looked up at him.
"Excuse me?"
"You won’t go alone." He repeated. "If that’s what you’re worried about, you don’t have to be. All you have to do is tell them where you think the information is and they’ll do the rest."
"Oh?" She felt more relaxed after hearing him say this. "Well, that’s good. That was indeed what I was worried about. So, who are they?" She asked and Raymond shifted his gaze to the man sitting next to her.
Reluctantly, her head moved in a robotic motion towards Maxwell who was no longer paying attention to them and lost in his phone.
"Uh? You don’t mean him, do you?" She hoped Raymond was messing with her but he wasn’t.
"He’s the best man for the job," Raymond said. "Though it’s not easy to convince him. I’ll need to convince his wife first."
"But does it have to be him?" Jane protested. "I mean, isn’t there someone else for the job?"
"There are a few," Raymond said and started tapping his fingertips on the table. "But his capabilities are above theirs and I thought it would make you feel comfortable if you went with someone you were a little bit familiar with."
Jane went silent. There was that reasoning but... she looked at Maxwell who was still staring at his phone... she didn’t feel good going with him.
He came off as a psychotic creep to her and she was scared he would suddenly do something while on the trip.
By something, she meant, he would help her divide her souls from her body.
But since Raymond said he was the best fit for it and she didn’t want to travel with a stranger, she decided to give in.
"Alright." She said,
"Don’t worry, you two won’t be going alone." Raymond suddenly added and she blinked.
"Uh?"
Why the hell did he omit that important information?
Maxwell suddenly took off his AirPods and asked,
"Were you talking about me? My ears are a bit itchy." He said but they did not respond and simply gave him blank eyes. "Hm, maybe it’s my sweet wifey thinking about me. I should probably call her."
He got up and left to make his call.
Jane sighed. This wife-obsessed maniac was the man she was going to be traveling with. Well, at least they wouldn’t be going alone.
On that note, she would use this opportunity to surprise Daniel, since she said she would spend the whole week here.
She couldn’t wait to see the look on his face.
