Chapter 228: I can wear it myself

Jane cried for a while and finally calmed down but she did not stand from her spot and sat there for a while until she heard a knock.

"You stopped crying a while ago." Maxwell’s voice came from the other side of the door. "Don’t you think it’s time to come out?"

Though surprised, she stayed silent.

"Hm? Did you fall asleep?" he asked, wondering because of the silence.

"What do you want?" She asked in a little cracked voice. Screaming and crying so much must’ve hurt her voice.

"Nothing much but I’m running an errand right now. I would very much like to complete it and get back to my wife." he said politely and once again, she fell silent.

For some reason, Maxwell wasn’t mad like he would be in a normal case. He hated anything that made him stay away from. Paige even for a second but with Jane, he wanted to watch more.

She was... how would he put it?... Amusing.

Jane finally got up and unlocked the door. Slowly, she opened the door and exposed her haggard appearance.

Her feets were red. Her eyes, as well as underneath her eyelids were swollen. Her hair was also scattered and her dress was ruined. She looked horrible.

Well, anyone would assume she was a mad girl with the way she looked.

"Poor you." Maxwell remarked and took off his coat. He placed it around her and then handed her her phone.

He had picked it up when chasing after the guys that tried to kidnap her. She must’ve purposely dropped it but he couldn’t tell why.

"Thank you." She said and checked the screen. It was a bit chopped at the corner but it was still good.

Maxwell also had a pair of shoes with him. He really came prepared. Well, he was always prepared.

"I can wear it myself." Jane said and took the shoes from him. "Thank you."

Maxwell watched her. She was such an amusement piece but she was the third person he found amusing so far.

First was Paige but since he loved her, he didn’t feel right with putting her in the current number of people he found amusing. His feelings were beyond that.

Then, he would replace it with Ariel. Though he never encountered her one on one before, the clips he watched of her, she was such an unpredictable human being. It was obvious that she had a very kind heart but she managed to pull off such wicked acts without batting an eye.

It was very commendable and since she was the daughter of the woman Paige looked up to so much, he liked her too.

Then, there was the little Rachael and now her, Jane.

They all had something in common. Having a smiling and kind face but when they were serious, they changed completely and acted completely out of everyone’s expectations.

Unpredictable humans were what amused him the most.

He discovered Rachael to be like that when he saw her frowning at the maids who were speaking about her mother being a replacement. She looked so angry for a four year old and clenched her tiny fists.

He was sure Rachael was going to do something at that moment. Yell, scream and even go as far as threatening them but the moment she spotted him, she immediately changed her expression into a sunny one.

She was so good.

And seeing the commotion she caused at this event of the year, he was finding her even more amusing. What was there not to like?

The same blood flower through all three of them so it was understandable but this girl. Jane! She was no way related to then but she had this strong personality under that dumb font she carried on a daily basis.

But maybe she wasn’t that dumb. After all, she was a known surgeon so...

Just then, Jane’s phone rang. She looked at the caller ID and immediately transformed her expression into a sunny one.

"Daniel." She said cheerfully, "You saw the pics? Yeah, I’m doing great, as you could see."

Daniel was her fiance, the one she had sent her pics to during the day before all this commotion. She was acting like she was alright when she was in such a state.

(Sorry but I can’t seem to remember her fiance’s name so let’s go with Daniel.)

"Of course I’m alright. I’m having fun, babe."

Maxwell watched her and grinned.

The hypocrisy in her tone was only noticed by the man standing next to her. She was not alright. She had cried a lot, so much that her voice was hoarse and cracked. Her eyes were puffy and her appearance...

Her dress was ripped, her feet were red inside those shoes from running bare for so long and her hair was in a mess. Exactly how did she manage to keep her voice straight in such a situation? Acting all normal. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Jane cut the call and turned to Maxwell whose grin was beyond vivid.

"What?"

"Shall we go now? I think it’s time to leave." He said, checking his wristwatch and she sighed before nodding.

They went out. The host of the event was leaving early and people felt there was no use staying longer so they started leaving as well.

Back at the mansion, Raymond sat next to Rachael while she slept. He was thinking.

For a moment, when he entered the restroom, he thought of the scene from a long time ago, when Ariel beat down the girls in the restroom, the first time he took her to an occasion.

A young lady who was trying to live up to his expectations and take back her life... she was so bold and reckless.

Rachael seemed to have taken a lot from her mother in the sense of being too brave... and reckless. Standing up to someone who was three times her size... she was very reckless.

That recklessness came with such a price but he couldn’t help but smile. How much she resembled her mother... how much of a talented person she would grow up to be.

The next day, Jane acted like nothing was wrong. She was back to spewing out all her thoughts in a single breath but she was also drinking a lot of coffee. Not to Alexa’s knowledge though.

If Alexa found out she was taking in so much coffee, she would immediately guess that something was going on behind her back.

Romeo and Rachael did not go to visit Alexa. Rachael refused to go with all she had and Romeo followed her lead.

She pleaded for Raymond to lie and said,

"I know lying is bad. Mummy says lying is bad but... ngh..." she wanted to cry. "I don’t want mummy to see me like this."

Raymond hugged her. He didn’t want Alexa to see her like that either. He was already planning to kee Rachael hidden even if she didn’t ask him to.

This would be the second time he was hiding his daughter’s injury from Alexa. It made him feel bad and that he was very irresponsible but he couldn’t think of any other way.

The last thing he wanted was to see Alexa in tears and look at him with eyes filled with unsaid accusations.

He had already seen a lot of it in his nightmares. No more. He didn’t want to see those eyes anymore.

"Alright." Raymond said. "But first, I want you to tell me something."

He broke the hug and Rachael looked at him with wondering eyes.

"What is it, daddy?"

"How did you know that I love your mummy?" He asked and she bowed her head.

"That portrait, I know the lady in there is the one daddy loves and unlike her, mummy’s eyes are a little far apart but such a thing doesn’t mean anything because I heard you and uncle Steve talking about mummy."

She explained and fiddled her thumbs.

"You said mummy lost her memories and that is why she doesn’t remember you. You said you did the test and mummy is... the lady in the portrait."

"Is that true?" Jane’s voice suddenly resounded in the room and they both turned to see her.

She looked shocked and in disbelief.

"Alexa is Ariel? Your Ariel?" She asked as she stormed into the room. "The Ariel that died five years ago?"

Raymond was silent and so was Rachael. Neither of them wanted to affirm what she heard.

"Why aren’t you saying anything?" She asked. "Is it true that Alexa is Ariel or not? And..." she looked at Rachael. "Rachael." She turned at Raymond. " Does this mean Rachael is your real daughter?" She asked but there was still no response. "Why is no one answering me?"

"Because that is the answer." Maxwell’s voice came from the door and she turned to see him with a smug look on his face. "Can’t you tell? Their silence clearly states that your words are true."

Jane looked at him in disbelief. One would think she was shocked at the news but rather, she went ahead and frowned before asking,

"You ...are you following me?"
