Chapter 185: What happened?

"Now that that’s solved, do you think it’s safe to bring up another issue that suddenly crept up?" Paige asked, pursing her lips and then licking it.

"What do you mean another issue?" Steve asked, completely oblivious of what she was going to say.

"There was an accident and..."

"Wait, Paige, tell me Rachael wasn’t involved." Steve said, feeling his sweat suddenly drip down his forehead.

"Yes, sadly she was involved. We’re currently in the hospital and Rachael is unconscious."

"Rachael is unconscious?" He exclaimed a little too loud and Raymond who had just entered his room, turned grim as he asked in a furious tone,

"What did you just say? What happened to Racheal?"

Paige heard Raymond’s voice and covered her mouth. Did he hear? Oh no, this was the worst.

"What did you say happened to Rachael? Why is she unconscious?" Raymond asked, storming towards Steve.

"Well, that’s..." he kept quiet, darting his eyes aside. He didn’t know the full story so what was he going to say?

"Answer me, Steve." He demanded and from the other line, Paige could already sense his furry.

Just then, a nurse came in and announced that the lady’s surgery was a success and she was currently being taken to the ICU.

"Paige," Steve called. "I think it would be best if you came to the facility."

Paige heard this and sighed. She cut the call and kept her head down for a moment before raising it to speak to the nurse.

"Where’s the doctor? I want to request the patient to be transferred to another facility." She said and squeezed her hands together.

She had never made this sort of mistake and for some reason, she was getting overly anxious.

Now, she wondered about these things. Maybe I should’ve gone with more guards. Maybe I should’ve taken the kids home after the movie. Maybe I should’ve just taken them home after the incident with that suspicious man.

These thoughts roamed through her head.

Rachael wasn’t extremely hurt but the thought of Raymond getting mad at her own mistake, it made her feel anxious.

She saw him during the days when he was losing himself because of Ariel’s death. She was there and witnessed how scary he could be.

But even then, she tried her best to treat his broken mental state. She didn’t succeed and so many failed as well so when she heard this particular news of a psychologist who had never sent a patient away as they were, she knew she just had to take the chance.

Anything to make him go back to normal. Anything to end the madness he put up at night and the madness that found a way to instill pity and at the same time, fear, into the hearts of all those around him.

Getting to the facility, Paige found a stretcher ready at the entrance.

The people involved in the transfer carried the lady’s stretcher down from the emergency bus and towards the people from the facility. After the transfer and signing the completion document, the people from the hospital returned.

Paige squeezed Romeo’s hand tight and pursed her lips. Now it was time to face Raymond.

"Mummy," Romeo called and she looked down. "Daddy is over there." He said and she looked back to see Steve standing at the door.

Rachael had already been taken up as well so she walked towards him. He had his arms folded as he watched her.

From the looks of it, he was exhausted. He probably hadn’t gotten the opportunity to rest after performing the surgery.

"What happened?" Steve asked.

"Let’s go inside. I’ll tell you when you finally sit." She said but Steve shook his head.

"If we go in now, you’re going to have to face Raymond. I need to know what happened to be able to respond to him."

Paige sighed and said,

"We went to a playground and while I was on a call, Rachael and Romeo discovered a suspicious person. They probably felt threatened and decided to draw everyone’s attention to the suspicious man."

Steve looked at her as she talked, wondering where the accident took place.

"Nothing happened to them then. It was all okay and the suspicious man was taken away but then when I went to get ice cream to cheer them up, a bike came out of nowhere. It was being chased by a car so even after Rachael was able to dodge the bike, she couldn’t avoid the car because she realized too late."

Steve’s eyes widened.

"Did she get hit?" He asked but she shook her head.

"That blonde lady saved her." Paige said and Steve sighed. "Right now, she’s just unconscious with a few bruises."

Steve looked down at Romeo and unfolded his arms before patting his head. He looked fine and that had him relieved.

"In other words, the only one in critical condition is the lady who saved Rachael." Steve said and Paige nodded. "That’s a bit relieving but for Raymond..." he shook his head. "With his two important people unconscious, do you think he will be able to think straight?"

Paige stayed silent.

"It’s not that I’m blaming you but for Raymond, I don’t think he’ll brush it off." Steve said.

"I know." She said and looked up to meet his eyes. "I’ll go talk to him. You, get some rest. I know you’re stressed out already so don’t push yourself too hard." She patted his shoulder and left Romeo in his care while she went towards Rachael’s ward.

Raymond stared at Rachael unconscious on the bed. He pursed his lips, let out the heaviness in his chest through a deep breath and then pursed his lips once more.

He covered his face with his palms and then rubbed them. He didn’t know what he was doing wrong. What was it that he was doing so wrong that he was always getting punished?

Why was this happening to him?

"Knock!" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

He looked back to see who made that single knock and found Paige.

What he wanted now, more than anything, were answers. But he didn’t want to take his feelings of insecurity out on anyone.

Paige was a lady who was careful in all that she did, she was smart so for something like this to happen, it must’ve been out of her hands.

But then again, Rachael wasn’t one to get injured out of stubbornness or carelessness so he wondered,

"How did this happen?"
