Chapter 180: He was witty but not very bold

"You’re teasing me, aren’t you?" Rachael asked with pouted lips and Raymond laughed.

"Do you believe I’m teasing you like they do in the movies as well?" He asked and she pumped her cheeks harder while eying him and he laughed once more. "Okay, I’m not."

"Then why did you say it like that? If you want to marry my mummy, you won’t joke about it." Rachael said.

"You’re right. But this has to do with your mummy so I’ll have to hear her opinion before saying anything about this." He said and she nodded.

"But just let me know, do you plan on marrying my mummy?"

"Why do you want to know that?" Raymond asked with a knowing smile and she shrugged her shoulders.

"You never know, I can be your little matchmaker." She said with a wink.

Raymond laughed again. She was such a cute thing.

"Come on, tell me already." She urged him but just then, a knock came from the door.

His assistant walked in and Raymond turned his chair to face the door.

"Sir, I’ve brought the documents that require your attention as well as your schedule for the rest of the day." He said and Raymond sighed. He looked down at Rachael. What would she do while he was working?

"I understand." He said and to Rachael, he asked, "What do you want to do while I’m working?"

Rachael thought about it. Then she remembered the drawing she couldn’t give him because of those bullies in her old school.

"Can I get a little desk and chair right over there?" She pointed to the spot where the assistant was standing.

"Sure. You want to watch me while I work?"

"Not like that. I want to draw a pretty picture so I’ll need a full crayon set," she counted her fingers. "...a few cardboard papers, and a pencil."

"Alright." He said and looked up at the assistant. "I hope you got that. Get it for her right away. I won’t start work until they’ve arrived."

"Right away sir." His assistant hurried out of there but then came back in. "What color of chair and desk?"

"Make it blue." Raymond said and the assistant left.

Raymond didn’t know why he said blue but a part of how Rachael made her request reminded him of the time he bought a blue chair for Ariel at the meeting so he just blurted out blue.

An hour later, Rachael’s full table set arrived and was positioned right in front of Raymond’s desk. He liked that he could see her each time he raised his head from his work.

Her face was a type of soothing medicine that relieved him of his fatigue. He smiled.

While Raymond was busy working, Rachael busied herself with her drawing. She wasn’t an expert but she was great at doodles.

Meticulously, she drew a family portrait and each time she looked up to see Raymond working with his full attention, she’d smile and face her drawing.

When it was noon, Rachael felt her stomach grumble. She looked up at Raymond, he was still working hard.

’Should I tell him I’m hungry? But he looks busy.’ She considered.

Sensing Rachael’s eyes on him, Raymond looked up and met her gaze.

"What’s wrong?" He asked and she looked aside.

"Well, I was wondering, won’t you eat lunch?" She asked and Raymond quickly checked his watch. It was past lunch time.

How could he have been so neglectful?

He immediately stood up, against the heavy load on his desk.

"Sir, I can help get your lunch." His assistant said. "You can stay while I..."

"I want to take my daughter out for lunch." Raymond intercepted.

Rachael looked at the anxious assistant. It seemed there was still so much to do and that was why he felt anxious.

"Um, daddy, why not just wait for the mister to get us lunch?" She suggested but he shook his head.

"By the time he gets back, you’d be too hungry." Raymond said and she shook her head.

"Then I’ll go with him. We’ll both pick out your lunch while you stay back and work." She hopped out of her desk and held the assistant’s hand. "I think that’s the best solution."

"Rachael, I can’t let you go with him alone." Raymond stated.

"Then we’ll go with the guards." Rachael said, "Please, daddy. You can’t afford to miss more work and stress out your employees, can you?" She asked with cute puppy dog eyes.

Raymond was silent for a moment. He didn’t want to be stuck here working his ass off while Rachael had fun with a stranger. Plus, he was feeling very insecure. What if something happened to Rachael while she was out with Chain.

Raymond has two assistants. One, a female sitting just right outside his office, taking care of his appointments and the rest and the other, Chain who was also working as his secretary.

He was witty but not very bold.

If something happened to Rachael, he wouldn’t be able to handle it. So the best option was for them to go with as many guards as they could.

Plus, now that he had exposed Rachael’s existence, danger was bound to follow.

"I can’t be sure." Raymond said.

"Are you really going to leave your work, daddy?" Rachael asked, keeping up her puppy eyes.

"Rachael, don’t you want to have lunch with me? Is that it?" He asked and sat down. "You’re probably tired of me already, aren’t you?"

"No, that’s not it." Rachael said and looked at Chain. She tried her best. Besides, she wanted them to have lunch together anyway. "Alright, let’s go."

Raymond smiled and stood up. He walked out of his desk and went to carry her.

"We’ll have a quick lunch and get back right away." Rachael said with her hands clasped together, hoping the assistant wouldn’t feel too stressed out.

But Chain was already breaking in his head. The workload kept increasing by the minute. He had never faced such a heavy workload since he started working for Raymond Stein so it was a bit - scratch that - It was too overwhelming.

He looked back at the files and got a call from another section of the company asking for permission to send more materials up.

He cut the call and sighed.

"Guess I was way over my head when things were going so smoothly over the years." He exclaimed and scratched the back of his head. "The real work starts now."

Raymond and Rachael went to a nice restaurant, with the company of his guards, of course. They ate their meal and Rachael reminded him to pick up something nice for the assistant.

Raymond did not oppose that and asked one of the guards to order a takeout meal for Chain while they waited in the car.

"Did you enjoy your meal?" Raymond asked, stroking the little girl who had eaten to her fill.

"Yes." She answered and burped. "Oops, excuse my manners." She said and they both laughed. "Let’s come with mummy sometime soon. When she’s all better." She suddenly said in a solemn tone.

Raymond nodded his head and said,

"Yes. You, your mom and I will come out to dine once she’s all better." Rachael nodded and closed her eyes.

He heard that healthy kids tend to sleep after eating a full belly.

After getting to the company, he carried her as she slept and laid her on the bed in the office room. Yeah, the same one Ariel used on a daily basis in the past.

He left the door open in case she woke up. She might get scared, waking up in an unfamiliar place and he didn’t want that so he left the door ajar.

Chain was very grateful that the chairman went out of his way and got lunch for him. He made sure to eat it meticulously and resumed his work with full vigor.

Raymond worked hard and long till the sun set. Rachael woke up just as the sun was setting and she met a colorful view of the outside through the see-through glass.

It was so pretty that she got lost in the scenery.

Raymond glanced at her and smiled, returning his gaze to his work. She looked so much like a little Ariel.

Ariel always had a thing for pretty things. She had been a child who had seen nothing but hardship and pain and when she finally got exposed to pretty and heart warming sights, she would stare in amazement.

It almost got to the point where her eyes would tear up. Life was beautiful, it had so many beautiful things.

But how was life so beautiful that she didn’t see any of it till she was at her last breath? She had wondered and so did he.

Beautiful things... in all his years of living, he only got to see something beautiful after having her break into his life and... his heart.

And for Ariel, one of those beautiful things life gave her, the most beautiful thing life gave her was Raymond.

She was thankful. Even when life refused to show its beauty to her, it managed to give her a spark to put her hope on. That beautiful spark bred about beautiful hope, longing and dreams. She was truly grateful.

And at the time when Raymond’s beautiful thing was taken away from him, the world once again showed its ugly side and he fell into darkness.

He watched as Rachael looked from the glass to him and smiled. He smiled back and watched as she turned her attention back to the glass. He too was grateful...to have come this far.
