I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 179: Did they scare you?
Raymond stayed by Alexa’s bedside while holding her hand. It was the second day and she hasn’t woken up yet.
Rachael was worried and was scared but she rarely cried. She was currently standing outside, refusing to come in to see her mummy in this bad condition.
’Can I really work while I know she’s like this?’ Raymond wondered and pressed her hand on his forehead. He wouldn’t be able to concentrate.
And then there was how to take care of Rachael.
Romeo had gone to school so she would be alone with the maids and he didn’t want that so the conclusion was to take her with him to the office.
But here he was, wondering if he would really be able to go to work.
There were a lot of things that needed his attention in the office so he couldn’t stay away for much longer.
"I’m taking Rachael to the office with me." He said to Alexa. "I’ll make sure to keep my eyes on her while I work so you don’t have to worry." He kissed her hand. "But don’t worry, we’ll be back soon."
He let go and got up. Outside, he found Rachael standing just outside the door while hugging her plushie.
"Is mummy still not awake today?" She asked and Raymond squatted down to her level and brushed back her neatly styled pigtails.
"She’s still sleeping but don’t worry, once she wakes up, they’ll let us know." He said and she nodded.
"Alright." She said and he carried her up.
"Now, would you like to come with daddy to work?"
Though sad, it could be seen from the delight in her eyes that she was interested in going to his workplace.
Raymond took her out and got in the car. He placed her down to sit and she looked out the window. Once he was balanced, he said to the driver,
"Let’s go." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
At the office, everyone waited patiently for the chairman’s arrival, including the acting CEO.
The important figures stood outside as they waited while the lesser figures, like regular employees, lined up inside.
"It seems the chairman wants to make a big announcement for him to ask everyone to gather outside." The vice president said to the CEO who just looked on in wonder.
Raymond wasn’t someone to indulge in flashy announcements or hearings so for him to ask everyone to gather around, he must’ve had a reason to do so. A valuable reason.
’Does he plan to dismiss half of the board members?’ he wondered, glancing over at the board members who were middle-aged men and then Raymond’s car as well as his entourage drove in.
Three cars went forward before Raymond’s car stopped in front of the entrance.
The guard sitting at the passenger’s seat got down and opened the door. Raymond put one leg out before getting down, adjusting his suit in the process.
The crowd was just about to greet when he turned his back on them and brought out little Rachael.
He carried her in his arms and turned to them.
Stunned, they watched as Raymond walked in majestically with Rachael in his arms. Who was the little girl and why... Why was the chairman carrying her in his arms?
The CEO, Moses, was stunned. He was a man of over fourth and he got the position as CEO thanks to his talents and hardwork. He used to be a mere worker and his expertise wasn’t recognized because he didn’t have a background.
But unlike every other corrupt establishment that looked at background to determine a person’s capabilities, Raymond looked at capabilities and handpicked those who would be in power in his company. He couldn’t have asked for more.
He had worked for Raymond for five years yet now, this was the first time he was seeing such a bright expression on his face. His expression looked lighter and he was doing something they had never seen him do before.
Surely everyone knew the story of how he lost his wife and unborn child and they all knew he had a weak spot for children but he never actually went that close to them. The only one they knew he was close with was Romeo.
The child from his friend and in-law. But even Romeo wasn’t carried around like this in the company.
In any case, it was rare to see him carrying a child around.
"Daddy," Rachael called, shocking them even more. "Why are they all staring at us like that?"
"It’s because Rachael is just so cute." Raymond said and Rachael exclaimed.
"Oh." She looked at all their stunned expressions and smiled. "Thank you. I think you’re all good looking too." She said and Raymond smiled.
Her smile caught all of them off guard.
She always had her way with words and then she’d smile. It was truly adorable.
"Moses." Raymond called, breaking him out of his shock and he stepped forward. "They can return to their work and stop staring. They’ve seen Rachael enough."
"Ah, yes." Moses said and bowed his head. Then, he looked up and peeked at Rachael.
She was such an adorable little girl with hair as black as Raymond’s and wide eyes that seemed to hold the world in it.
Looking closely, he could see clearly the resemblance she had with Raymond.
Wait, was she his...? No! There was no way she was his daughter. Raymond didn’t meet anyone after his wife’s death.
"I said stop staring." Raymond said and Moses looked away.
Raymond carried Rachael into the building while everyone was left to wonder.
Moses gave out a breath of relief.
"Everyone can return to their posts now." He announced and the vice president, Oscar, walked towards him.
"Just now, was that what I thought it was?" He asked and Moses patted his shoulder.
"Whatever you thought it was, I don’t know. If you wanna know, you’ll have to be patient. The chairman will probably reveal it soon." He said and walked in.
Raymond took the elevator to his office and inside, he watched Rachael as she stared at herself in the elevator wall’s reflection.
"Did they scare you?" He asked and Rachael shook her head.
"No." She said, "I get stares like that when I go out with mummy anyway." She added and he nodded.
"Don’t worry, okay? Your mummy’s gonna be okay."
"I know." She said and clutched on to him tightly.
The elevator doors opened and he walked out. He walked into his office and Rachael’s eyes widened as she saw the see through glass.
"Whoa!" She exclaimed. "Put me down. I want to see."
Raymond put her down and she ran to the glass. Her eyes twinkled. The entire wall was made of glass, enabling her to see everything from that height.
"Wow, why is it all made of glass?" She touched it and felt it was sturdy. "We’re so high up." She said, "Everyone looks like ants. Just like that night at the amusement park where everything was so tiny." She turned to Raymond with a big smile. "Do you look out every day? Do you stay till it’s dark so you can see the lights from here? Do you...?"
Her questions were interrupted when Raymond suddenly carried her.
He sat on his chair and placed her on his legs.
"I don’t really have time to look down." He said. "But at times when I work so late that it’s very dark out and I feel lonely, I turn around from my table and view everything through the glass."
"Really? And how do you feel when you do that? Does it feel magically relieving?" Rachael asked and Raymond stared at the glass with a sad smile.
The times he stared at the glass, stared at his reflection, and all he saw was Ariel hugging him for comfort.
"Yes. Yes, it was."
Rachael saw Raymond’s expression from the see-through glass. It really was a see-through glass because from that angel, she could see the sad and relieved smile he had playing on his lips.
He was sometimes mysterious and she didn’t understand his actions or his words but she could tell that he was a good person from one glance. In fact, he was the best person, after her mother and that was why she wanted him to be her daddy.
She wanted to love him as much as she loved her mummy. She wanted them to live together and be one big family.
She planned to make that come true but now, her mummy is sick.
"Daddy," she called and he looked down at her. "...the person you were looking for, is it the person you want to get married to?"
"What? Where did you get that idea from?" He asked her and she hugged her plushie.
"I saw the portrait in the hallway." She said, "That person... she looks so much like mummy but... it’s the girl you like, right?"
Raymond was silent. Even Romeo couldn’t point out the difference.
"She was the girl I liked." Raymond said and brushed her hair back.
"Was?"
"Now, I like your mummy." He said and her eyes widened. She turned her head to see him smiling.
"Are you saying you like my mummy?"
"I just said that." He said, nodding his head.
"Then, does that mean you will marry her like what they do in the movies?" She asked in anticipation.
"I don’t know. Should I?" he grinned and she pouted her lips.
"You’re teasing me, aren’t you?"
