Chapter 171: Her unsteady feeling

Alexa opened her eyes and slowly blinked before closing her eyes again. But then, she jolted up as if she was shocked by electric bolts and sat up, breathing heavily. She looked towards the door, hurriedly took off the sheets covering her and started rushing towards it.

"Where are you going?" She heard a voice ask as she was about to open the door and turned to see Raymond. He was sitting at the end of the room with a book in his hand.

That part of the room was a little dark with only a lamp on so she didn’t notice. Anyway, with her current condition, she wouldn’t have noticed anything.

"You...What are you doing here?" She asked. Raymond placed the book on the table next to him and stood up. He approached her.

"You probably don’t remember but the headache attack came again." he said and she looked down at his arm. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt so that means she didn’t bite him this time, right?

"Don’t worry, you bit on a cloth." He said.

"Then how... how did you know I was having a headache attack again? Weren’t you in your room?" She asked him and he looked sadly at her.

"I was in my room when the maids rushed to me saying you were hitting your head against the wall." He said and slid her hair aside, showing the bruise on her forehead.

She touched it and was shocked. She didn’t feel anything till that moment. She pursed her lips.

He explained this so she would understand better since apparently, she didn’t remember waking up with a headache. A gruesome one at that.

"It went down but I couldn’t be sure that it wouldn’t break out again so I stayed here."

Hearing that she had a breakout again explained to her why she was feeling so sweaty but she couldn’t understand his reasoning.

"Why?" Alexa asked and he started touching her head, stroking down the stray hair that was ruffled. What was he doing?

She looked down, suddenly remembering the feeling she got after waking up. Her expression looked like she was greatly disturbed.

"Is something the matter?" He asked her and she looked up at him.

"Where’s Rachael?" She asked him.

"She’s in the next room sleeping with Romeo." He said but she still wouldn’t calm down. She pursed her lips and searched with her eyeballs. "What’s the matter?"

"I... I want to see her. I want to see my daughter and make sure... make sure she’s okay." She said,

Raymond couldn’t tell her reason for worrying but seeing how disturbed she looked and how unsteady her pupils were, he decided it was best to just show her her daughter and put her at ease.

"Come." He held her hand and led her steadily to the next room. Silently and slowly, he opened the door. "Look over there." He pointed at the kids.

They were sleeping peacefully next to each other and her heart finally felt at ease.

"Thank God." She said, breathing in relief. "Thank God." She repeated and walked away from the door towards her own room.

She paced the room a bit and Raymond was finally compelled to ask her what was going on.

"Did you have a nightmare?" He asked but she shook her head.

"I didn’t." She said, "I didn’t have a nightmare yet somehow I woke up like someone who had seen their own death in their dreams." She said and paused. What did she just say? "It’s a metaphor." She said as if assuring herself.

"Sit down first." Raymond told her and she sat on the bed. He picked up the bottle of water from the lamp stand and gave it to her.

"Thanks." She said and drank it, a little too fast as she ended up coughing.

"Easy." He patted her back, taking the bottle water from her and she nodded her head.

"I’m okay." She said, "I’m okay."

"Why do you seem like you’re in a rush? Are you sure you didn’t have a nightmare?"

Alexa pursed her lips and looked up at him.

"I told you I didn’t." She said and lowered her head, her hands clutching tightly on the sheets. "I didn’t but somehow, I felt something strange. I opened my eyes and closed them, only to feel like I was losing the most precious person to me. It was awful. I wanted to scream but my voice wouldn’t come out. It was terrifying. Is there such a thing as a sober nightmare?" She clutched his shirt in an act of desperation. "I was clearly awake when I felt that ."

Sweat rolled down her head and Raymond placed a hand on her shoulder. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

"It’s possible your memories are struggling to come out." He said. "And that’s why you’re feeling pain every now and then. If you can just bear it a little longer, you might be able to recall a bit of your past, even if it’s the bad part."

"If this is about recalling my past then... can’t we just try hypnosis? If I remember them forcefully, I wouldn’t have to face this torment, would I?"

Raymond was silent. She looked like she was in pain. It was also painful watching her struggle like this. She was never like this. She never had this lousy appearance.

What did they do to that strong lady?

"It’s not that simple." Raymond told her. "And it’s not certain that you won’t feel the pain."

"This is too much." She grabbed her head. "Why would she do this to me? Why would she go so far? Argh."

"Calm down." He held her but she was so mad that she didn’t want to be consoled.

"I can’t calm down. I can’t believe I ever thought she was a good person. I accepted such an evil person as my sister and it makes me feel awful. How did I end up with her?"

’Who is this ’her’?’ Raymond wondered.

"Who knows, if I hadn’t noticed it on time, she could’ve done much worse. I was such a fool and it makes me mad."

"Alexa, calm down. You will only agitate the headache if you continue this." He said and she looked up at him, biting down on her lips.

Really, if she hadn’t met Raymond, how would she have fared till now after finding out about Serena’s plots? She might’ve already been caught and locked up somewhere.

Thinking about it, her eyes suddenly became teary.
