Chapter 157: Where’s Rachael?

"How do you find Raymond’s unusual attachment to your daughter?" Paige asked.

Alexa looked at her. What exactly did she want her to say?

"Do you think he’s doing that because it’s a child from a woman who looks like his late wife?" Paige asked and Alexa stared deep into her eyes, as if searching for the answer this lady would like her to say.

"Honestly, I find it weird." She answered.

"Oh? Then do you like the idea?" Paige asked but Alexa did not respond. "There are times when mother’s use their children to get together with a man in power. Do you like Raymond Stein? Do you wish for your daughter to draw you closer to him for financial gain?"

"I won’t deny that I have a little attraction to Raymond Stein but I will definitely not use my daughter just to get what I want. Financial gain? As long as my daughter is happy with me, I don’t need riches." Alexa admitted.

"And what if she wants Raymond to be her father? Would you marry him because of your daughter’s wish?" Paige asked and Alexa fell silent. She gulped down silently and then answered,

"Aside from what I want, I would definitely follow my daughters wishes. You may say I’m spoiling her but for Rachael, who gave me a reason to continue living even when I was in the dark, I would do it. Even if it meant exchanging my life for it."

Paige was silent. She closed her eyes and smiled. She too was a mother so she understood where Alexa was coming from.

"Good enough." Paige said, opened her eyes and turned her head to look towards the slightly opened door. "Does that answer your questions, hm, Steve?" She asked and Alexa looked towards the door to see a blonde hair man wearing glasses walk in.

"Ahem." He cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses. "It’s alright." He walked closer and stood in front of Alexa. "Nice to meet you, Miss Alexa. My name is Steve and I’m the doctor in charge of your treatment which...’’ his eyes trailed to the unfinished drip. "...Has been interrupted."

"Oh, that, I...sorry, I... I panicked because I didn’t know where I was, so... so sorry." Alexa frantically apologizes.

"It can’t be helped. Anyone in your situation would panic as well." Steve said and went towards the drawers. "Afterall, you were unconscious when you were brought in."

He picked up a ball of cotton from inside the drawer and iodine. He went over to her and cleaned up the blood on her arm.

"Bear with me, it’s going to sting a bit." He said and cleaned up the blood before covering it up with a bandaid.

"What was in the drip bag?" Alexa asked.

"It was just normal Saline. Why? Do you have a headache? You seemed to have overdosed yourself with some hard medication so I flushed your system. Is that okay?"

"Hard medication?" Alexa thought back. Was he talking about her headache pills? She did take more than usual because she felt frustrated and the headache wouldn’t go down.

"Anyway, you might feel weak since you haven’t eaten anything in two days but after now, you can eat enough and regain your strength."

"Haha, she was so light when I carried her. It was like I was carrying a notebook." Paige laughed.

"Wait, did you say two days? Was I out for two days?" Alexa asked, beyond surprised.

"Well, yes." Paige answered. "You’ve been unconscious for two days."

Alexa tried to get up in a hurry and held Paige.

"Where’s Rachael? She must be worried. I need to see..."

"Mummy!" Came Rachael’s loud and excited voice.

"Rachael?" She turned her head to see Rachael running towards her.

"Mummy." Rachael threw herself in her mother’s arms and they both fell back into the bed.

Alexa had no strength that even her daughter was able to throw her off balance but she didn’t care about that. As long as her daughter was in her arms.

"Oh my baby, mummy made you worried. I’m so sorry." She kissed her head and held her tight. "I’m so sorry."

"Mummy, don’t get sick anymore." Rachael sobbed. "I was so scared."

"So sorry, baby. Mummy won’t get sick anymore." Alexa said and then, she heard steady and heavy steps approaching them. She opened her eyes, only to see the owner of those heavy steps to be Raymond’s.

He had his hands in his pocket as he looked at the mother and daughter duo. Through that indifferent expression on his face, she could see that his complexion was bright. What changed?

"I’m glad you’re awake." Raymond said and Rachael got down from her mother. "Your daughter was worried."

Alexa sat up and looked at Raymond Stein. He looked good. Like really good. He looked really good and that was all her mind could think of at the moment.

"Thank you, for everything." She said and finally got her thoughts straight. "Can I ask, why?"

"Hm?"

Paige and Steve seemed to understand what Alexa was asking and their attention went to Raymond. That was the same thing they wanted to know but he refused to say anything.

"Why did you take such a risk? It’s not your responsibility or obligation. We’re not related. Why would you get up in the middle of the night and fly across the world just because my daughter called you over? Why?"

Raymond was silent for a moment. All eyes were on him, including Rachael. They waited for him to speak and the moment he opened his mouth, he said a very basic thing.

"Just because." He said, which shocked them. What sort of reason was that? Did that mean he chose to do so without a particular reason?

"You’re joking." Alexa said in disbelief. "There’s got to be a reason."

"You want me to state a reason?" He asked and her stare said so. "Miss Alexa, I told you, I like your daughter and I like spending time with her. This was an opportunity to get her to my side with you included." He leaned his head closer towards her and asked, "Is that a good enough reason?"

Rachael saw what was going on and though she understood, she wanted to do what was in her mind and asked,

"Are you going to kiss my mummy?" She asked to the astonishment of everyone and covered her face. "Should I close my eyes? I promise I won’t watch."

"Rachael, that’s not..."

"Do you want that, Rachael?" Raymond asked, shocking everyone even more. "Do you want me to kiss your mummy?"

"Yes?"
