Chapter 126: What happened to your hand?

"Hey." Jane snapped her fingers in front of Alexa’s face and that brought her out of her chain of thoughts. "What’s with you?"

Alexa blinked her eyes twice and looked up. She had been so lost thinking that she didn’t know when Jane entered her office.

Jane, all dolled up in a white dress, her fringes nearly combed and hair nicely done, looked at Alexa in a bit confused and worried way. It wasn’t like Alexa to simply trial off in her thoughts.

"I called you name like six times. What were you thinking about?" She asked and Alexa shook it out of her head.

"It’s nothing." She said and looked up at Alexa again. "I thought you..."

"Went out with my fiance? Yeah but I forgot something in my office so I had to drop by. On my way out, I decided to check up on you, only to find you daydreaming. What happened?"

"It’s nothing." Alexa repeated. "I just had something to think about." She said but Jane squinted her eyes while looking at her. "What?"

"You’re acting strange. Did something happen?"

"Hm, no. Nothing happened."

"Are you sure?" She asked but Alexa gave her a straight face silent response. "That reminds me, how did it go with your appointment?"

Alexa made a pause before answering,

"It went well." Though she said this, Jane couldn’t stop her inquisitive nature and she kept her eyes on her suspiciously. "What?"

"You paused. You actually paused, Alexa." She pointed out.

"Yes? Your point is?"

"Alexa, you’re acting differently today. You were thinking so hard, you paused before answering my question and now you have this look on your face." She mentioned but Alexa did not see a problem with her attitude.

"That doesn’t mean anything. I just had a lot in my head." She said and rubbed the back of her neck.

"Not even that museum speech got you so racked up so, what’s going on? ’Who’ is on your mind?" She asked so intently that Alexa had to think about it. She was indeed acting unusually.

"I guess I’ve been too stressed lately." She made up yet another excuse but that infuriated Jane who snatched the notepad from underneath her arms. "Jane, why are you behaving this way?"

"Because ’you’ are behaving this way." She said and Alexa sighed. How strange was she acting for Jane to behave so indecently towards her? "Let’s see here. Who did you meet?"

Alexa sighed once more.

"Raymond Stein?" She called and looked up in surprise. "Raymond Stein is your patient?"

"Yes, Jane. Raymond Stein is my patient." Her eyes glazed over, not knowing why Jane was making yet another big deal out of ’nothing’.

Jane blinked her eyes in disbelief and then looked back at the information gathered on the notepad. It seems off to Alexa so she asked,

"What is it?"

"Alexa, do you know who Raymond Stein is?" She asked her but Alexa didn’t look like she had any clue as to what she was talking about. "Oh my God, when you heard your client was someone very high up, did you not bother to research about him?"

"I don’t check out my clients information till I meet them and get proper permission." Alexa explained.

"Well you should’ve."

"Besides, I wasn’t given his name until today." She explained and Jane nodded her head.

"That’s understandable. You don’t know who you’re dealing with here, do you?"

Alexa was silent. Where was all this coming from? She felt a bit drained after thinking so much and the last thing she wanted now was to occupy her mind with the private details of her patient.

"What’s this?" Jane asked as her eyes skimmed through the contents of the notepad and she read it out, "His wife has a similar resemblance to me?" She looked up. "Is this true?"

"Yes, now give me that and get going. Your fiance is probably waiting for you." Alexa said and got up, only for Jane to see her wrapped hand.

"What happened to your hand?" Alexa looked at her hand. The reminder that she had a rough start with that man. "Wait, did he do this to you?" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"No, Jane. It was an accident. I hit it against the table, that’s all." She said and wanted to brush it off but Jane took it seriously.

"But... " Before she could ask anything further, her phone rang and she saw that it was her fiance. Looking at it, she turned her gaze to Alexa and said, "You better take a look at who you’re treating. He’s not just ’some’ important figure." With those words said, she walked out of there, answered her fiance’s call and went on her way.

Alexa was honestly confused. Why did she have to look into her patient’s personal life? Well, if she used getting more research about him as an excuse then she could do it without a problem but she wasn’t entirely comfortable with it.

She looked at the notepad and then her hand. But with everything that was going on, she ought to get to know him better and he wasn’t much of a talker.

The tales he told about his wife were truly captivating as well so she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t curious as to what their past looked like.

She took her seat behind her desk and faced her computer. She reached for the mouse and started clicking.

As an important figure, there were bound to be pictures of him and his wife on the internet, right?

Reluctant but not so reluctant, she typed down ’Raymond Stein’ and the history brought out the entrepreneur businessman that shook the business world.

Stunned by what she was seeing, Alexa clicked on almost all the news outlets that featured his achievements but that wasn’t exactly what she was looking for.

Then, she saw pictures of Ariel and she was convinced that they did look alike a lot. It must’ve hurt when he saw her.

She kept scrolling down, then she came across a wedding clip. She immediately clicked on it and in it was the beautiful moment of Raymond Stein and his wife, Ariel Stein, exchanging rings.

They looked so happy and so pretty together. But for some reason, her heart ached. Unaware of the reason why she ached inside, she scrolled down and saw other clips of their wedding but aside from that, she saw a text stating the tragic demise of ’Miss Stein’ on their wedding night.

Alexa paused as a sudden shiver ran through her entire body. What was this feeling?

"It’s probably my conscience bothering me. I should stop." She told herself and closed the search window.

No good would come out of prying and knowing too much.

"Phew." She sighed and leaned her back on her chair. "I shouldn’t think too much. All I have to do is aid him in his recovery. I’ll do my best."
