Chapter 342: Tattling On Her

Throughout the week, neither Ruediger nor Lariette let the topic of Vincent, Chairman Alvord and the Alvord Corporation bother them.

They spent the rest of the week as if that man’s appearance and his audacious request were just figments of one’s imagination.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Aside from being preoccupied with teaching, Lariette was busier as the school geared up for the end-of-term examinations and final evaluations. She returned home mostly from five to six now, exhausted and longing for the bed.

As for Ruediger, he had been discussing additional measures to be taken against the Alvord Corporation if they retaliated. He learned from Nathaniel how frantically they tried reaching out to him.

"I think I’ve lost count of how many times they wanted to meet me. Well, Fabian said Vincent approached him during a banquet last week, but he promised nothing."

Ruediger scoffed upon hearing that remark from Nathaniel. He told his friend to continue ignoring the Alvords and also to inform him if they had changed their tactics.

As always, Nathaniel reassured Ruediger that he would have his back.

Indeed. His estranged father had gotten more desperate but it wasn’t his problem.

As the week approached its end, the pair went to visit Chairman Delaney on Saturday at noon. Ruediger received his truck back on Monday evening, a day after leaving it to the Campbells.

The temperature had dropped further and the breeze carried a semblance of frost. Winter would arrive anytime soon, including the end of the year.

Stepping into the entryway, Lariette and Ruediger saw Chairman Delaney walking toward them. It seemed like he heard the engine, or the bodyguard notified him of their arrival just now.

"Lari! Eddy!"

"Grandpa!"

Lariette ran into Chairman Delaney’s arms, her hair tousling behind her back. Ruediger smilingly watched the grandfather and granddaughter pair laugh while asking for each other’s wellbeing.

Wrapped in a soft cardigan, Chairman Delaney happily welcomed his granddaughter and grandson-in-law to his abode. The elderly man was as lively as ever.

"Oh dear, where’s the fat in your cheeks?" Chairman Delaney scowled as he squeezed Lariette’s face, "Did you skip eating? I don’t think Eddy has been starving you."

Chairman Delaney and Ruediger frequently texted each other. The elderly man always asked his grandson-in-law to send photos of the dishes made for the day.

The reason?

It was solely for bragging. He boasted about his multi-skilled grandson-in-law’s abilities to his old friends.

"It’s not that..." Lariette whined. She quickly wriggled free from her grandfather, not expecting a nagging as soon as she arrived, "I eat like usual."

"Grandpa, scold her," Ruediger quickly tattled on Lariette to Chairman Delaney, a smirk tugging on his lips, "She didn’t eat much these days, too busy with work."

"Eddy!" Lariette glared, lips pouting.

Shrugging, Ruediger said nonchalantly, "I’m just telling the truth. Grandpa should know."

Chairman Delaney glanced from his pouty granddaughter to his smirking grandson-in-law. Then, his focus zeroed in on Lariette, "Were you too busy with work? Why? Did they give others’ work to you too?"

Through the occasional texts and phone calls, Chairman Delaney knew that Lariette was busier than before. But he didn’t expect it was enough to make his precious granddaughter eat less.

Lariette was annoyed. Shifting her gaze from Chairman Delaney, she glared at the culprit Ruediger. He seemed smug after tattling on her.

He needed to be punished!

Sure, she was busier, but she still ate like usual! She hadn’t even lost any weight.

Grandpa was just a worrywart, and this cheeky guy just added fuel to the fire.

"Everyone’s busy," Lariette narrowed her eyes, looking from Chairman Delaney to Ruediger, "And I’m still weighed the same. I even eat like usual. Grandpa, want me to accompany you to get your eyes checked?"

If her grandfather insisted she had lost some weight, maybe there was something wrong with his eyes, no?

As for Ruediger, she would sort him out at home later.

Humph!

"Ugh... this brat," Chairman Delaney huffed, "There’s nothing wrong with my eyes! Ahem, I know I’m old, but I can still see well."

"Really?"

"Really!"

As the three stayed in the hallway, bantering and laughing, the housekeeper reminded them to come inside. Lunch was already served in the dining room, waiting for them to dig in.

The room was bright with autumn sun filtered through the tall windows. Polished silverware and meticulously plated dishes lined the long table.

"Oh! Looks yummy!" Lariette exclaimed once she saw the feast, her face beaming.

"Eat more," Chairman Delaney said while settling in his chair, "I won’t let you go home until I see you eat everything."

"Grandpa!"

Huffing, Lariette sat on her chair. She glared at Ruediger who sat across from her. Another smirk was drawn on his lips.

The chef did well today for lunch. Roasted chestnut soup, miso-glazed black cod and sauteed brussel sprouts. He also prepared swirled apple tarte tartin and genmaicha tea.

They chatted while enjoying lunch. Their voices echoed in the dining room, laced with laughter.

And...

"Lari," Chairman Delaney said, spooning another helping of black cod onto his beloved granddaughter’s plate, "Here, you should get more protein."

Lariette groaned softly, almost inaudible, "Grandpa, I’m eating. I’ll be too full at this rate."

"Not enough," Chairman Delaney replied firmly, his eyes narrowing, "You’ve gotten thinner."

Ruediger bit back a chuckle, hiding his smirk behind a sip of tea. Lariette shot him another glare, the very one culprit who had planted that concern in her grandfather’s head.

Noticing her cute glare, he arched his brows. She kicked his leg but barely earned even a wince from him.

Chairman Delaney wasn’t done, "You need energy to work, Lari. Handling students is hard work, you know? Won’t you get much busier next month? Right before the holidays?"

Chairman Delaney didn’t know much about Lariette’s duty as a middle-school teacher, but he acknowledged his granddaughter could be so busy at times.

"You couldn’t be more right, Grandpa," Lariette chuckled, "My colleagues and I try to get everything done before winter break. It begins before Christmas and ends a week after New Year."

Lariette truly anticipated the break that would take over two weeks. She couldn’t wait to relax while enjoying winter. She and Ruediger had talked about decorating the apartment with a Christmas tree and ornaments once December came.

"About your Christmas," Chairman Delaney paused, eyes glancing from Lariette and Ruediger, "What’s your plan? Do you want to celebrate it like usual or change it?"

Her grandfather’s question caught her off guard. In a second, her mind was inadvertently reminded of her maiden family.
