Chapter 343: How To Celebrate Christmas this Year

The holiday seasons were rarely enjoyable to Lariette from the year she left Moonville. Even though the Elsher family’s Christmas celebrations were nothing short of extravagance, she wasn’t happy.

The Elsher family often threw two Christmas parties, one for family and relatives while the other was for friends and business acquaintances. Both were not pleasant to Lariette.

As always, her parents and brothers’ focus was only on Stephanie. As if the Christmas celebrations were her birthday party, she was the star, smiling brightly while being showered with lavish gifts and praises.

How about Lariette?

She was merely an afterthought.

The Elsher family did give her Christmas presents, but it was evident everything was bought without much thinking, unlike how carefully they chose gifts for Stephanie.

And when she presented them with the gifts she got for them... to say they had little interest was an understatement. They handed the presents to the maids and she found out later they rarely bothered to open them.

The lack of thought put into her gifts and the lack of interest in the ones she presented them, both played a role in disappointing the teenager Lariette.

When she contemplated silently leaving the party to go to her room or any quiet place, her maternal grandfather saved her from her disappointment. He let her stay by her side as he chatted with their relatives and friends, also talking about her to them.

"Seriously, why did you give Mom and Dad this? Couldn’t you do better?"

Stephanie openly ridiculed Lariette when she took the liberty of opening Samantha and Jonathan’s presents after the party. The mockery in her soft blue eyes was very apparent.

Lariette had nothing else to say aside from smiling weakly. She knew she wouldn’t only invite trouble to herself if she refuted Stephanie.

The following holiday seasons were just the same. She was simply a wallflower to the family. But over the years, she tried to keep her hopes down to avoid being disappointed over and over.

As for this year...

Did she want to celebrate Christmas like usual with the Elsher family?

And subjected herself to the unneeded stress?

No. She did not want that.

Christmas should be a day full of joy, not sorrow. And she knew better now biological family meant nothing much to her.

Lariette blinked slowly, already having her answer. Her eyes shifted from the elderly man to Ruediger, both waiting for her reply.

"I won’t join the usual celebration," Lariette said, her tone careful as she assessed Chairman Delaney’s face, "I’ll discuss with Eddy how to celebrate Christmas this year. We’ll tell you our plan later, Grandpa."

Lariette knew for certain Ruediger didn’t want to celebrate Christmas with the Elsher family, and surely not with the Alvords. But she wondered what he might have in mind.

Perhaps a little celebration just for the two of them? Or they could join Madeline and her mother.

Christmas and the New Year were still one month and a half away, but she couldn’t help but envision the days already.

"Yes, you should do that, Lari," Chairman Delaney drew a smile on his lips, "Maybe we can have a little dinner sometime, either before or after Christmas. Or perhaps on New Year."

Despite his disappointment, Chairman Delaney supported Lariette’s decision. He knew his granddaughter wouldn’t be happy celebrating Christmas with her family.

Thus, it would be better if she made another choice.

Unable to help herself, Lariette beamed, overjoyed from receiving more support from Chairman Delaney. Her sapphire eyes sparkled, resembling the ocean under a summer sky.

"Thank you, Grandpa! Sure, we’d love to have that. Perhaps we should host you at our place."

"I agree with Lari," Ruediger chimed in, fully approving Lariette’s impromptu suggestion, "We haven’t hosted you at the apartment ever since we got married."

All this time, Ruediger and Lariette went to Chairman Delaney’s residence for their catch-up sessions. They had only hosted dinner for Madeline and it happened only once so far.

"So, does it mean I get to taste my grandson-in-law’s cooking again? Of course, I’ll say yes!"

Chairman Delaney’s merry reply elicited laughter from Lariette and Ruediger. The pair promised to plan the special dinner well before giving the elderly man the details.

Their lunch ended on a happy note. Lariette and Ruediger spent more time with Chairman Delaney until it was time for his post-lunch afternoon nap. They took this chance to wander outside.

The garden stretched like a private wonderland around the manor. Afternoon light filtered through the bare-limbed branches, casting delicate shadows across the winding cobblestone paths.

Holding Ruediger’s left hand, Lariette said with a mischievous smile, "Eddy, you’ve been far too smug earlier. Don’t you think you’re too bold now?"

Amused, Ruediger raised a brow, "So? Are you going to punish me with a stroll now? It won’t ever be a punishment to me, my dear."

"Humph! I’ll sort you out at home later."

"Oho? How?"

"You’ll see~"

Letting Ruediger’s hand go, Lariette suddenly skipped down the path, her boots tapping lightly on the cobblestones. Her hair and coat fluttered behind her.

Ruediger couldn’t help but chuckle, entertained by Lariette’s random antics. He followed her with longer strides, "About what you told Grandpa earlier, have you had any ideas? How should we celebrate Christmas?"

Landing on a step far ahead, Lariette glanced behind her shoulder, looking at Ruediger. The breeze picked up, ruffling through his crimson locks. freēnovelkiss.com

"Actually, I’m not sure yet," Lariette tilted up her chin, staring at the overcast autumn sky, "Grandpa’s question shocked me. I wonder, should we have a quiet Christmas celebration? Or, maybe we can ask Maddie if we can join her."

Reaching for Lariette’s hand, Ruediger gently twirled her to face him, one hand cradling her waist. As their eyes met, his lips curled into a soft smile.

"What do you say if go to Moonville? We’ll decorate the cottage and have fun there. I think Aunt Mel and Uncle Paul will be happy if we celebrate Christmas there. We can visit your grandma’s grave on that day too."

Lariette gasped softly, her eyes widening.

Christmas in Moonville?

Was he being serious?
