Chapter 341: My Wife is So Sassy

After dinner, Lariette and Ruediger proceeded to their next routine of washing the dishes and cleaning the dining table. The mango panna cotta was still in the fridge, waiting to be savored afterward.

"Eddy, you also want one?" Lariette asked while opening the fridge door, glancing at Ruediger who was wiping his hands dry.

"Sure," Ruediger smiled, "Just one."

Taking two small glasses of panna cotta, Lariette brought them to the living room. She couldn’t wait to have another one of Ruediger’s tasty cold desserts.

The bright orange color of the mango puree had been tempting her. With just one look, she knew it was delicious.

The couch welcomed them in its usual way, comfy, quiet and warm. Lariette curled up beside Ruediger, legs tucked beneath her. She passed one glass to him before leaning over his shoulder.

For a while, there was only the comfort of silence and a gentle breeze brushing against the windows. The city was still very much alive at eight in the evening.

Halfway through her glass of panna cotta, Lariette shifted slightly, looking up at Ruediger, "Eddy... there’s something I should tell you."

The caution in Lariette’s tone was enough to alert Ruediger. He immediately glanced down at her, "What is it?"

Hesitating, Lariette put the glass down on the coffee table. Then, she turned to properly face Ruediger whose brows slightly furrowing.

"That man... Vincent came to see me at school today."

Ruediger’s body tensed instantly, "...he what?"

Lariette sat up a little, still cautious but steady, "He didn’t cause a scene. Said he wanted to contact you through me. I didn’t let him say much before I told him to leave."

Ruediger’s hand clenched the glass, the one grasping the couch seat. His jaw tightened as he replayed Lariette’s words in his mind. A sharp glint flared in his eyes.

"He shouldn’t have come near you," Ruediger spoke, his voice low but just barely controlled, "He knows exactly what he’s doing."

Reaching out both hands, Lariette gently pried the glass off Ruediger’s hand. Smiling faintly, she said, "I thought you should hear it from me. I didn’t want to hide it."

Her heart whispered to keep Vincent’s abrupt visit a secret while her mind persuaded her to relay it to Ruediger. After a deep contemplation, her rationale won.

Ruediger exhaled slowly, trying to suppress the anger boiling in his chest. He searched Lariette’s face, finding evident lines of concern in her countenance.

"Lettie, thank you for telling me," Ruediger leaned forward, bringing Lariette into his arms, "He won’t get to bother you again. None of them will. I won’t let them."

Lariette chuckled, tension melting from her shoulders. She patted Ruediger’s back, hoping to reassure him that she was alright.

"That’s good, Eddy. Because if he does..." she pulled away slightly, then punched the air with a fierce little growl, "I’ll land a punch or two myself. I’ll throw darts at him too."

Blinking, Ruediger laughed, the sound breaking through his tension. Lifting his hands, he cupped Lariette’s face before squeezing her cheeks.

"My wife is so sassy. Remind me not to get on your bad side, okay?"

Lariette grinned as she leaned against Ruediger, heart steady again, "Hehe, you never will. But... have you known already? About him failing to contact you?"

Lariette remembered Vincent saying he had failed so far to reach Ruediger. She wondered whether the latter was already aware of that fact.

Upon listening to her inquiry, he sighed again, and then nodded, "I knew. Yesterday evening, I found some messages sent to my old e-mail address. And this morning, I went to meet Mr. Hayes."

Blinking, Lariette frowned, "Did he come here? He told Mr. Hayes to inform him once you were back, right? Then, what did Mr. Hayes do?"

Ruediger smiled faintly. While stroking Lariette’s head to calm her, he began telling her, starting from the e-mails, then to the letters and what Vincent requested from Mr. Hayes.

By the end of Ruediger’s story, Lariette was so mad her heart boiling with anger. Her face flushed red out of her wrath toward the shameless Vincent.

"How dare they! They came crawling to get your help after all these years? How shameless! They thought they could just demand whatever they wanted? Hah!"

With both hands on her hips, the upset Lariette began nagging. She kept shooting bullets from her mouth, amusing Ruediger who kept quiet, eyes on her.

"You’re not his servant! Aren’t they the high and mighty Alvords? Freaking solve their problems themselves! Why must they drag you too?!"

Ruediger, "..."

"Do they think they can bully you? Over my dead body! I gonna hit them next time! GRRR!"

Unable to help himself, Ruediger finally burst out laughing, his heart light and free. He quickly pulled the upset Lariette into a hug, his laughter rumbled in his chest.

"Ah! Eddy!" Lariette’s legs flailed when Ruediger suddenly pulled her.

"Lettie, don’t let them ruin your mood. It’s not worth it," Ruediger spoke between laughter, entertained seeing Lariette’s angry look, "You might get too upset to sleep well tonight."

"Humph! I won’t!" Lariette complained, brows wrinkling and cheeks puffing, "I’ll dream of kicking them into a cesspool and wake up happy!"

Ruediger only laughed harder, his breath warm against her skin, "Hehe, you’re so cute when you’re angry."

"Grrr! I’m still mad!"

Lariette wriggled in Ruediger’s grasp, trying to push him away but he held fast. Her fingers brushed along her sides as he shifted, unintentionally grazing sensitive spots on her waist.

She squealed, "E-Eddy! That tickles!"

Ruediger blinked, then grinned mischievously, "Oh? Here?"

"Don’t you dare!"

Lariette shrieked, half-laughing now, trying to wriggle free as Ruediger poked again. She laughed so hard she nearly slid off the couch, clutching at his sweater for balance.

"Okay, okay! I give up!" she cried between giggles, "You win!"

Ruediger loosened his hold, smiling as Lariette caught her breath, cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling.

"See?" he grinned, brushing her hair from her face, "Much better than being mad. They’re not worth even an ounce of your attention."

"Hmm... okay. I won’t think of them."

Lariette returned to Ruediger, leaning on him. She smiled when he gently cradled her, his lips brushing atop her head.
