Chapter 83: Images Of The Past Life

Audrey was quiet the whole ride back to the Grey Blood Pack. She kept thinking about what she had just learned about Mr. Russell and she couldn’t bring herself to believe that the always-cheerful boss she’d known for a long time could be so inhumane.

A thought suddenly popped into her head and she turned her head toward Alpha Lake. Thinking about it, she concluded that Mr. Russell was even merciful compared to what Alpha Lake did to her as a little girl without a wolf.

"What’s the matter?" Alpha Lake asked.

He had noticed Audrey staring at him for some time and decided to ask her if everything was alright.

"Nothing," Audrey replied and faced the window.

"We’re here, Alpha," Henry announced as he rolled the car to a stop in front of the Packhouse.

Philip quickly went out to open the door for Alpha Lake, bowing his head as the Alpha came out from the car.

"Catherine, follow me, there’s something I need to show you," Alpha Lake said, stretching his hand out to Audrey who was already halfway into the Packhouse.

She sighed and reluctantly turned to walk towards Alpha Lake.

"Catherine!" She suddenly heard someone call her name from inside the Packhouse.

She turned her head to see Maya running towards her with speed.

"What’s the matter, Maya?" She asked skeptically.

She had only told her to find her if she ever heard the voice in her head again. And if that was the case, she had warned Maya never to discuss anything of that sort with her in front of Alpha Lake.

"Thank you for the other day. I haven’t heard anything since then," Maya hugged Audrey, whispering the last part into Audrey’s ear.

Alpha Lake stood there, watching Maya with narrowed eyes, something didn’t feel right to him about her.

He wondered when Audrey started getting familiar with his guests.

"Hey, can we talk later?" Audrey asked, glancing back at Alpha Lake.

"You have to go now?" Maya asked cutely.

"Yeah," Audrey nodded.

"Okay, see you soon, then," Maya suddenly tipped her toes and placed a kiss on Audrey’s cheek, running off after that.

Audrey stood frozen in place, looking at the fleeing girl.

It can’t be, she had read her thoughts the moment Maya touched her and was shocked to find out that the way Maya saw her had changed.

She now viewed her in a romantic way, it was the last thing she imagined to happen between her and her sister’s daughter who was by the way, a dark witch.

She shook her head, clearing the thoughts, and walked forward to Alpha Lake.

She avoided looking into his eyes, as she felt the volcanic anger and jealousy erupting through her stare.

"Come here, Kitten," He commanded in a dark tone.

Audrey reluctantly took his outstretched hand but mmediately wanted to withdraw it.

"Argh!"

The next moment, Alpha Lake doubled over in excruciating pain, holding his head with his other hand to reduce the pain but it didn’t work.

The pain kept getting worse and worse as unfamiliar images flashed through his eyes.

He saw himself making love to someone exactly like Audrey in a strange-looking open garden.

Suddenly the image shifted to a wedding between him and this Catherine’s look-alike, he heard himself calling her Catherine, just like he called Audrey.

He screamed louder as he watched the scene shift to where was driving a knife into Catherine’s heart while she tried to protect a familiar-looking lady behind her.

Suddenly, the pain was gone as if he had just imagined it. He slowly straightened himself and stared at Audrey with the strangest look he’d ever had.

"Catherine?" He called her cautiously.

He didn’t know what to make of what he just saw. But he was so sure that the woman in his flashes was the same person standing before him.

Audrey froze for a while. He called her Catherine alright, but she knew he wasn’t referring to the present her. She had also seen the images flash through his mind because she was holding him all the way through.

She didn’t know how to react. She stared at him blankly for a second before deciding to act clueless.

"Yes?" She answered him casually like she did every day.

"Who are you answering as, Catherine?" Alpha Lake asked directly, his forehead creasing in confusion.

"I don’t understand, as Catherine, your secretary of course," Audrey said innocently.

"I feel like I’ve known you from a past life," Alpha Lake confessed, staring her right in the eyes, trying to detect any lies from her.

"That’s strange," Audrey chuckled.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Audrey shrugged her shoulders.

Alpha Lake couldn’t bring himself to believe her. He’s always felt a connection between him and Audrey from the moment he set his eyes on them during his gala, and as time went by, it seemed like things were starting to make themselves clearer to him.

"I don’t believe you," He replied.

Audrey sighed, frustrated. She was trying to figure out why this happened but she couldn’t come up with any reasonable cause.

Was she the cause?

"Here’s what, I don’t believe in reincarnation, but if what you’re saying was the truth, then maybe we might have been lovers in the past life or some other universe. But I’m sorry to disappoint you because I don’t recall anything like you just did. Please, I beg you for the last time, stop trying to turn me into who I’m not. First Audrey, now, some unknown lady with the same name as me," Audrey subtly removed her hand from his.

"Hey, wait," Alpha Lake grabbed her hand as she was about to leave.

"Then, for the last time, answer me this, I promise to leave you alone if you still maintain the same answer," Alpha Lake spoke softly, his heartbreak could be detected in his voice.

Audrey nodded.

"Have you never felt a strange connection between us? A connection not from this world but from a past life? Have you never felt like I’m the missing piece that’ll make you whole? Tell me I’m the only one who has been feeling this way from the moment we set eyes on each other?" Alpha asked, different emotions flashing through his vulnerable eyes.

Audrey slowly looked away from him, she couldn’t bring herself to answer him honestly. She felt that this time, if she really denied it, he’d never look her way again.

But she couldn’t bring herself to say the truth either.

"Look into my eyes and answer me, Kitten," Alpha Lake turned her face back to him.

Audrey didn’t say a word for a very long time, she didn’t want to. She kept looking everywhere but at him, trying to look for something to divert his attention from her.

"Well then," Alpha Lake released her hand from his hold, taking a step back, "There’s my answer," He said, his countenance looking shattered.

"I-"

"You don’t owe me any explanation, Catherine. From now on, I’ll never cross your path again. I’m sorry for having imposed myself on you all this while," He said, bent down, and dropped a barely-there kiss on her cheek.

Audrey stood there short of words as she watched him walk away from her, going towards the direction of the forest.

As he went farther away, Audrey felt like a part of her was leaving. It felt like a part of their mate bond had shattered with his heart.

She felt alone.

And this time, she felt the weight of his words when he said he’ll never cross paths with her anymore. She knew he meant every word he had just said to her.

She sighed heavily, trying to convince herself that this wasn’t the reason she had returned to that pack. This was one of the things she had to endure in the pursuit of her power.

"Hey, I heard everything," Audrey turned to see Maria standing behind her, an understanding look in her eyes.

"You’ll be alright, I promise," Maria hugged Audrey softly, patting her back to suit her worries.

"Come, on, Bridget made some dinner," She wrapped her hand around Audrey’s waist and gently led her into the Packhouse.

Audrey glanced back one last time towards the direction Alpha Lake had taken, but she couldn’t see him anymore. She sighed and followed her cousin into the Packhouse.

"Cheer up, child," Ms. Bridget rubbed Audrey’s back as she sat at the dining table with her friends, playing around with the food on her plate.

"You know? I kind of feel like things will eventually work out between you and the Alpha," Ms. Bridget said convincingly.

"Yes, me too," Sandra replied, smiling encouragingly at Audrey.

"Agreed," Maria said, nodding her head.

"There’s no way that’ll be possible again, I ruined all my chances," Audrey sighed dejectedly.

"Then let me help you get over him," Alex suddenly said.

He’s been quiet all these while, observing Audrey and feeling his heart shatter with how broken Audrey looked. He decided that then was the right moment for him to step into her life.

Sandra quickly turned toward Alex, secretly glaring at him, she knew he was about to make a very grave mistake that might sever his and Audrey’s friendship forever. She kept shaking her head at him but he ignored her, pretending he wasn’t seeing her restrictive signs.

"How so?" Maria curiosly asked Alex.

"What?" Maria whispered to Sandra who pinched her side for asking Alex such a question.

It only spurred him on.

"Be my mate, Audrey," Alex said seriously.

Cling!!!

Maria’s fork fell loudly to the floor as she unbelievably stared at Alex with her mouth ajar.

"What!?" Maria screamed.
