Chapter 71: Acceptance Challenge!

"Damn, human! You’re not bad!" Lawrence said as Audrey held him down between her legs, holding a blade to his neck, blood trickled down across his neck to the ground.

"Fall out, Lawrence," Audrey whispered slyly.

"Get off first, ugh, you’re quite heavy," Lawrence grunted.

"Sure, but first, answer this," Audrey pressed the knife slightly deeper into his throat.

"Ouch! Do you reallyo kill me? Fine, tell me what you want to know," Lawrence said with a furrowed brow.

Lawrence felt the shift in Audrey’s eye, he couldn’t explain it, but he knew whatever she was about to ask him was very important to her.

Audrey lowered her mouth to Lawrence’s ear so no one would hear what she was about to say to him, but before she could open her mouth, a hand drew her up by the elbow and roughly pulled her away from Lawrence.

"Fall out, Lawrence!" Alpha Lake growled menacingly.

Lawrence quickly stood up and bowed to the Alpha, he quickly hurried away, sending Audrey a sympathetic look.

Sandra stood in the distance and watched Lawrence walk away from the scene, she almost felt like going to him but she remembered how he had brutally rejected her as his mate and decided against it.

She saw how Alpha Lake was holding Audrey to his side.

She couldn’t help but wonder what could be going on between them this time. She was about to walk away when she saw Adeline heading straight to Audrey.

"What do you think you’re doing?" Alpha Lake asked angrily.

His face was filled with dark and raw rage.

Everyone around felt the strong presence of their Alpha’s hurt and angry wolf; automatically, they stopped their fight and turned their heads to him, ready to fight beside him.

"Keep practicing!" Andrew roared to the crowd, getting their attention away from Audrey and the Alpha, and... Adeline who was standing furiously four steps behind Alpha Lake.

"You would’ve told me you were into BDSM," Alpha Lake spoke nastily.

"It’ll be more sensible to let go of me now," Audrey frowned.

He dared to insult her!

She was angry.

Who told him he could treat her however he wanted in front of people? These kinds of situations make her remember the hatred that was between her and the Alpha.

A

She remembered when she would let him treat her however he wanted and whenever he wanted and she would just take it all in without a single word.

Not now.

She wasn’t the same girl anymore, and it was about time he came to understand that.

She hoped he heeded her warning because if he didn’t, she would so use him to vent out all her frustrations.

"Or else?" Alpha Lake asked dauntingly.

Audrey tried to pry his hand away from her arm but it stuck like glue and wouldn’t budge.

"Have it your way," Audrey smiled innocently at him.

Before he could understand the sudden change in her demeanor, he felt a hard kick between his legs, directly to his crotch.

"Ugh! Argh!" Alpha Lake groaned painfully.

"Bitch!" Adeline ran towards Audrey with incredible speed, claws out and ready to attack, but Audrey easily dodged her. Infuriating her the more.

"Adeline, stop it," Alpha Lake was on his feet in a second, holding Adeline back.

Not because he feared for Audrey, but rather for Adeline.

He had seen and had witnessed first-hand how strong Audrey was; Adeline hadn’t. He knew Audrey could easily defeat Adeline in a fight, unless Adeline chose to fight in her wolf form, which was unacceptable considering she would be fighting a human.

He had yet to understand how Audrey came to wield such strength as a human.

"She dared to disrespect you, Alpha!" Adeline tried to struggle free from Alpha Lake’s hold.

She so wanted to use this opportunity and teach Audrey a lesson. She’s been dying to hurt Audrey personally, and now, the opportunity has posed itself to her but there she was, being held back by the Alpha.

She felt so infuriated.

"Let her be," Alpha Lake drew her to his side as he locked eyes with Audrey.

He wanted her to feel what he felt when he saw her with that Lawrence of a boy.

By that time, everyone had stopped whatever they were doing and was now focused on the scene. Even Andrew was surprised by the turn of events.

Audrey saw what Alpha Lake did and shrugged her shoulders. She picked up her spear and walked toward them.

Everyone, both the Pack members and the visitors were all whispering ill things about Audrey.

Some of them were ready to pounce in her for physically and publicly hurting their Alpha, but they knew they could not act without an order.

Andrew wanted to go and take Audrey out of that place but a hand held him back.

"What do you think you’re doing, Cub?" Andrew asked Alex who suddenly appeared behind him.

"First, my name is Alex, Second, let her cook," Alex winked at Andrew and locked his arm with his, standing closely beside him.

Andrew felt a strange feeling wash over him as he saw Alex wink at him, he always wondered why and how this particular Pack member always seemed to draw his attention. He found everything he did cute and that’s why he called him Cub.

But he couldn’t tell him that, rather he told him he called him Cub because he was older than him. He didn’t want to sound like a freak.

"Quit staring at me and watch," Alex scrunched his nose at him.

Andrew cleared his throat and nodded, "Sure," He turned his face away from Alex and faced the scene.

"You know what?" Audrey said with a demeaning smile, stopping in front of Adeline and looking down at her

"Maybe you should fuck her already, it’s partly part of her frustration, and to add to her list, menopause is knocking, knock, knock!" Audrey smiled sweetly at Adeline as she raised her folded fist and made a knocking sign In front of her face.

The crowd roared with Oohs and Ahhs.

"I said stop it!" Alpha Lake held Adeline tightly as she raised her claw to Audrey’s face, aiming to scratch it.

She knew she could damage her for life by doing so as she was just an ordinary human.

"Let me teach her a lesson she’ll never forget?" Adeline insisted.

"Ooh, I’m so scared," Audrey mocked her by pretending to shiver from fear.

Alpha Lake knew he couldn’t stop Audrey, he just kept holding on to Adeline whose wolf was threatening to surface. He knew it wouldn’t turn out well for Audrey if he let Adeline go.

"I’m out of here, don’t have time for a low esteemed bitch," Audrey turned around and started walking away.

But deep down, she knew the show wasn’t over, she felt it in her bones and she was so ready for the next scene.

"I, Adeline Sullivan of the Furry Pack, challenge you, human, to the battle of acceptance!" Adeline said loudly.

Audrey paused in her tracks and smiled to herself.

"What!"

"Oh no, not the battle of acceptance,"

"That’s it, she’s dead meat,"

"If I were her, I’d just decline and leave the Pack,"

"I saw this coming,"

Adeline smiled evilly as she heard different comments whispered through the crowd.

She was sure Audrey was dead meat just like the third comment said, she knew Audrey had no idea what the battle of acceptance was all about. But from the little she’s known her, she believed Audrey wouldn’t want to lose face to her, and if she was stupid enough to accept the challenge, she would never let such a golden opportunity pass her by.

She was aiming for the kill.

"I, Catherine, from the human world, accept your challenge," Audrey’s smile widened as she heard the gasp from the crowd. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"Catherine! You don’t have to do this!" Alpha Lake was by her side in a matter of seconds, shaking her vigorously by the shoulder.

"Let go," Audrey stepped away from him, putting enough distance between them.

"Catherine-"

"Please, it’s not like you care. You should be happy that I’m finally going to die and get out of the way for both of you," Audrey said, pointing at Adeline.

"That’s not-"

"Trying to beg your way out of it?" Adeline emerged behind Alpha Lake, a sinister grin on her face.

Audrey smiled, she was happy her plan was working, and Adeline was starting to lose her composure.

Baby steps, soon, everyone will see her for who she is.

"I’m ready whenever you’re done sorting out your Daddy issues," Audrey winked at Adeline, throwing her spear from one hand to the other.

"Catherine," Alpha Lake called cautiously.

"Alpha, you know the rules too. She can’t back down now," Adeline spoke loudly so everyone could hear.

She could hear the whispers grow louder from the crowd.

Alpha Lake knew it too, Adeline was right. Once a person accepts a challenge, it’s non-revocable.

Andrew came forward and motioned for everyone to form a large square around Audrey and Adeline.

When everyone had formed the perfect square, he looked at Alpha Lake and nodded at him.

"According to the early tradition of werewolves, humans were never allowed to live amongst us!" Alpha Lake spoke as he now stood in front of Audrey and Adeline inside the square.

"But, as time went by, the Moon goddess decided to start blessing us with human mates," He continued confidently.

"Now, to let them live amongst us, whether as mates or acquaintances, they have to go through a test to see if they are fit to live amongst werewolves," Alpha Lake looked meaningfully at Audrey before he continued.

"Catherine! You have accepted Adeline’s challenge of acceptance, and this challenge determines if you stay or leave the Pack. Adeline, you are to fight in your wolf form and not relent, for any human who wants to join the Pack, must be able to fight with the Pack. The first one to surrender, losses," He finished, and a roar was heard from the crowd.

The crowd was gingerly cheering for the fight, stomping their spears on the ground.

Alpha Lake sent Audrey one last look before he walked out of the square.

He had done his part as an Alpha by giving the speech, but, as a mate, he wanted to carry Audrey out of that square and into the safety of his arms where no harm could reach her.

But, as an Alpha, he couldn’t do it, he couldn’t go against a century-old rule.

Audrey and Adeline turned and faced each other.

The battle has just begun!
