Chapter 87: Attack

’User, I was observing Seraphine, but she disappeared out of nowhere. I believe she murmured something about things going as planned!’

Lilel’s voice echoed inside Shin’s mind the moment he arrived back at his house.

He had accompanied Jun and Izumi during their training for a while, though most of that time had been spent recovering. His body no longer felt exhausted, but he still couldn’t say he was at one hundred percent.

"Even though I said she was impatient..." he muttered quietly to himself as he stepped inside and closed the door. "Isn’t this a bit too fast?"

Shin had hoped he would have at least a week to prepare. But the way things were going... He was probably screwed.

Lilith was too impatient!

’Try looking around the house,’ Shin instructed calmly. ’Anytime I get out of your range, tell me so you can move and give me a bit more coverage. First, we need to see if we can find the assassins.’

He glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already almost nine PM, and the sky outside had been dark for a long time.

His enemies were strong, but more importantly, they were professionals. That meant they would likely choose the safest moment to strike.

Which meant they would strike when he was asleep.

Attacking someone in their sleep minimized risks and reduced the chances of something unexpected happening.

In that case, Shin could turn that logic against them. His sleep would become the bait.

Should he prepare traps?

He considered it for a moment before dismissing the idea. He had no real tools to set proper traps, and worse, there was a chance the assassins were already watching him.

It was safer to behave normally.

It’s probably better if I don’t do anything suspicious, Shin thought calmly. I can’t let them realize I know about the attack.

First, he needed information. Where were they hiding? How many were there? If he were lucky, they would believe he was completely unaware and defenseless.

That assumption alone would give him a massive advantage.

The Golden Sovereign Pistol could be summoned instantly out of nowhere. No one would expect someone who had barely possessed a system for two months to already have an epic-grade weapon.

As long as the enemies weren’t overwhelmingly powerful, he might actually have a chance.

For a while, all he could do was continue with his normal day, moving around the house to ensure Lilel would have the most reach possible.

’I found them!’ Finally, the little fairy said it.

Shin froze.

’I identified three people,’ the tiny fairy continued quickly. ’They’re already hiding inside your house.’

’Seriously?’ Shin asked silently, shocked. ’When did they get in? I didn’t notice anything...’

He forced himself to remain calm.

’Anyway, keep watching them,’ he continued. ’We need to know exactly when they will attack. If possible, find more about them, and about their powers.’

Lilel quietly flew through the house, her tiny invisible form drifting from room to room while she kept track of the intruders.

A few seconds later, her voice returned.

’One is hiding in the living room ceiling,’ she reported. ’Another one is outside near the back window. Apparently, two of them will keep watch on the outside to ensure no one interferes. And a third killer will get you.’

Shin slowly nodded to himself. They were naturally more worried about Haven sending someone to interfere than with Shin’s capabilities to resist.

But this would definitely play to his advantage.

’Get ready, I will need you to defend the first blow for me,’ Shin explained.

The clock was ticking closer to 10 PM. It was a bit earlier, but he could already go pretend to be sleeping.

He stretched lazily as if nothing was wrong, then walked toward the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water. After drinking it slowly, he wandered through the house back to his room. He got into bed and pretended to fall asleep.

Thinking about it, at least it was a good thing the girls were out tonight. Or maybe the assassins had chosen this exact day because he would be alone.

Either way, Shin felt relieved knowing they were all safe at Eva’s house, enjoying their girls’ night.

Now all he needed to do was make sure they would still have a boyfriend waiting for them in the morning.

’User... they’re not moving yet,’ Lilel whispered.

’That’s fine,’ Shin replied calmly. ’Stay close to the one who is going to attack me. From what you can see, what equipment does he have?’

’He has a normal pistol, I think. He’s wearing a black cloak to conceal his identity, but I believe he has some defensive gear beneath it. And he also has a dagger, the blade shines a bit with a few weird texts, so it’s definitely some magic item. It’s actually too flashy for an assassin.’

’Okay...’ Shin replied, his body tensing slightly. ’Stick by his side.’

Lilel did exactly as ordered.

For a long time, nothing happened.

The assassin carefully checked the entire house, making sure there were no traps and no other people present.

Then, just as Shin had predicted, the three of them split their roles.

Two of them stayed behind in the kitchen. They seemed to be installing some strange devices there. From what Lilel could understand from their conversation, it was some kind of teleportation device, or something similar.

In any case, it was magic that would allow them to escape instantly if things went wrong.

One of them remained near the device to protect the escape route. Another stayed on high alert to signal if anyone approached the house.

And finally, the third assassin moved toward Shin’s bedroom.

"They really are diligent with their work..." Lilel murmured to herself.

Things would have been much easier if they had made some careless mistake.

Still, she quickly reported everything to Shin.

’User, he’s entering your room right now. I don’t know how he’s doing it, but he can move through walls. He’s currently inside your wall.’

’Okay,’ Shin replied silently. ’He’s probably going to aim for my neck with a single killing blow. Stay by my side and be ready to block the first attack.’

’Okay...’

’Once he commits to the first strike, I’ll seize the opportunity to shoot at him at close range. He probably won’t bother defending because he doesn’t expect me to have a weapon.’

’Roger. I’ll use my body as a shield,’ Lilel said confidently. ’Just don’t die. No matter what happens to me, as long as you’re alive, I’ll be fine.’

’Okay.’

Silence returned, and for an agonizing second, Shin stayed on his bed. He tried to focus on his senses, but he couldn’t hear anything; it was like no one was in his house.

Then, suddenly, the assassin moved.

He burst out of the wall with shocking speed, his shiny dagger already aimed at Shin’s neck. It was a good thing that the weapon was so easy to recognize even in the darkness.

Still, he was so insanely fast, they barely had time to react.

Lilel, who had been hovering beside Shin the entire time, could barely do anything. She instantly threw herself forward, placing her tiny body directly in front of his neck.

She didn’t even try to check the trajectory of the attack. If she had, she would have reacted too slowly.

Instead, the tiny fairy simply trusted Shin’s prediction and positioned herself accordingly, hoping the assassin would strike exactly where he expected.

Then, in the blink of an eye, she felt something collide violently with her invisible barrier.

The assassin had aimed for the neck.

However, the strike was far too strong. The blade pierced through her barrier.

A scream echoed violently inside Shin’s mind, as Lilel was under so much pain she couldn’t control herself.

Lilel felt like she was being torn apart and sliced by multiple knives at the same time. Even so, she forced herself to remain in place, desperately blocking the attack for as long as she could.

That single moment was enough.

Shin moved instantly. His hand snapped upward as the Golden Sovereign Pistol materialized in his grip.

Bang!

The shot was fired from point-blank range.

Shin heard Lilel’s agonized scream echoing in his mind, but he had no time to think about it. He needed to win the fight,

The bullet tore through the assassin’s defensive gear.

However, the enemy reacted at the last possible instant, shifting his body slightly before the impact.

Instead of his chest, the bullet pierced straight through his shoulder.

Still...

Shin didn’t hesitate.

Before the man could even process what had happened, Shin raised the gun again and aimed directly for his head.

At the edge of his vision, he saw something that made his chest tighten. Lilel’s tiny body was slowly dissolving, breaking apart into countless green particles of light.

She was disappearing. But Shin didn’t let it take his focus away even for a second. They had a plan, and he needed to follow through with it.

Besides, she said she would be fine. Lilel was part of his system, so if Shin was still alive, she couldn’t die.

Clenching his teeth, Shin pulled the trigger again, not giving the opponent even a second to react.
