Chapter 38: Levon Rein

A deep seething rage was building up within Vale, his fist clenched so hard that his fingernails dug into his skin, leaving red prints. ๐“ฏ๐™ง๐“ฎ๐“ฎ๐’˜๐“ฎ๐™—๐™ฃ๐’๐’—๐’†๐“ต.๐“ฌ๐“ธ๐’Ž

He wasnโ€™t even so pissed by the fact that the girl was now his responsibility, what truly pissed him off was the fact that he had been dismissed, and his opinion hadnโ€™t even been asked for.

It was a true hit to his pride that he wasnโ€™t willing to take.

"This wasnโ€™t what we agreed on." His voice was slow and agitated, even though he still didnโ€™t want to resort to any violent means.

Corvis chuckled, and for some reason, it made Vale want to punch right through his skull.

"It is what fate wants, I do not have a say concerning the matter. Besides, Iโ€™m sure you wouldโ€™ve eventually come to the decision to take her out of the Prison realm without my intervention."

"Donโ€™t mistake me for a fool, I am not helping your granddaughter escape this godforsaken realm, and if you think I canโ€™t find a way to circumvent the contract, you are solely mistaken."

Vale spoke while pointing at the man behind the counter who looked as calm as a waveless sea.

Just then, Valeโ€™s outstretched finger bent backwards with a sickening crack. A searing pain reverberated throughout his body in an instant.

Vale fell to his knees as he let out a sharp high-pitched scream.

The pain from a single finger spread around his body and he desperately tried to fix the finger, twisted at an unnatural angle.

Everyone just silently watched him suffer.

Then the pain slowly subsided and Valeโ€™s groans reduced. The finger, with a soft click, straightened itself as if by magic. Valeโ€™s breath was heavy as the intense pain was still vivid in his mind.

In front of him, the interface was showcasing a notification.

______

The contractor is plotting to abandon and circumvent the contract. This constitutes a breach of contract, and punishment will be imposed accordingly.

Decided Punishmentโ€”Broken finger for a minute.

______

Seeing the notification in front of him, Vale could only smile bitterly. It seemed the system was not going to give him any way out of this one.

It was still frustrating that he would have to do something he hadnโ€™t signed up for, but the pain had made him realise that he didnโ€™t have much of a choice.

"You really played me didnโ€™t you?" Valeโ€™s laugh was dry and cracked as he got up.

He was just about to say something else when what he saw made his words get stuck in his throat.

The lady, Fallon and the Ogre, were on their knees and their heads were on the floor as if bowing to him. Their foreheads were touching the floor.

"Please," Fallon said, not even raising his head. "What we did wasnโ€™t right, but it was the only way to get your help. Other than a few mana stones we have nothing else of value.

"Please, donโ€™t take your anger out on Rein. Weโ€™re the ones at fault. She has nothing to do with this."

For some reason, Vale thought of Lilly at that moment and even though he didnโ€™t want to listen to them, something inside him did. It was clear that Rein was someone special to them and they had done everything for her.

He tsked and turned towards Corvis, instantly the little sympathy he had in his heart immediately vanished.

The fucker was still arranging the drinks on the shelves and wasnโ€™t even showing an iota of remorse.

"You may not know it now, but her presence would end up being vital in your journey. Itโ€™s just a matter of time," he said.

Corvis fetched three more boxes identical to the one that held the first mana stone. He arranged them on the counter side by side.

"I should probably leave you a parting gift." Immediately those words left his mouth, the walls of the inn began cracking and peeling, revealing an old and dusty surface underneath.

Not only that but the tables began to warp, going from new and clean to battered and dusty.

Even the few other people sitting at the tables seemed to be fading.

"Here, Covodex. Itโ€™s one of a kind," Corvis said, waving a new bottle of wine in front of him. He dropped in on the counter alongside the mana stones.

That was the parting gift he had talked about: a bottle of wine.

The inn seemed to get older and even the people in it began to fade. Soon everyone was transparent and the state of the inn became unrepairable.

"Hopefully, we wonโ€™t meet again. So take care of my granddaughter for me." Then in a whisper, he said, "You were always meant to walk this path."

Those were the last words of Corvis before he began to fade and the sunlight filtered through his being.

"Whatโ€™s happening?" Vale questioned as he stepped back looking at the people about to disappear.

Then Corvisโ€™ words echoed in his mind. "You neednโ€™t worry yourself about dead men."

It was clear now that he hadnโ€™t been lying as everything crumbled and everyone faded. Vale now got to see the innโ€™s true form. It was dilapidated and looked to have been abandoned for years.

Insects were moving over the dust-coated floors from time to time and the furniture was irreparable.

On the counter, apart from dust and cobwebs were the four boxes that should contain the mana stones and beside them was a bottle of wine.

The dust had also found its way on these items, making them look as old as everything else in this store.

A cough from Roxy got his attention, he immediately went to pick up the mana stones. With a small click, he opened the box, revealing the stone glowing with a luminous blue light.

It was perfectly preserved and as Vale picked it up he couldnโ€™t help but sigh in relief. At least this would help Roxy recover a bit.

She was already awake and staring at his hand with a greedy glint in her eyes.

"Give it," she muttered with some difficulty.

Vale handed the stone to her as she got down from his back. Normally one had to hold the mana stone in oneโ€™s hand and slowly absorb the energy it emanated.

Both Qi and Mana users could do this, just that for Qi users the mana would be converted to Qi.

This was a process Vale didnโ€™t know much about.

Roxy, however, directly placed it in her mouth, and Valeโ€™s eyes widened at the crunching sound she made as she ate the stone.

With his mouth agape, he watched her swallow it and enter a meditation stance.

He had a feeling she wasnโ€™t completely human but this just sealed the deal. No human could survive eating that.

While Roxy was meditating, Vale noticed something from the corner of his eye.

Standing outside the inn was a girl, her black hair cut short, only reaching the bottom of her ear.

Her clothes were unamusing and Vale wouldโ€™ve mistaken her for a regular towns member if not for a striking detail: The mask covering her mouth.

That was Levon Rein. His new problem.
