God Class Awakening: Ascension of the Demon Hunter-Chapter 37: I Have Read The Terms And Conditions.
It didn’t take long for the man, whom Vale later found to be named Corvis, to explain what he meant by babysitting, and when he was done, Vale realised that the deal wasn’t so bad.
According to him, there was a beast surge coming and it was going to be big.
Vale already knew about this as the old couple had informed him before they left. They hadn’t explained much about it as they didn’t know all the details behind it.
But Corvis was more educated on the subject.
The bottom level where they all resided was divided into two parts, although that wasn’t an accurate analogy. The part where the beasts resided was about a quarter of the entire level and it was sealed off by a barrier.
The beat surge was caused by the annual weakening of the barrier; this was an event that happened every five hundred days, and since the sun was not a reliable method of tracking time, most towns had devices to track it. According to Corvis, this cycle’s weakening had come earlier than anticipated.
Rein, whom he had talked about earlier was his grand-daughter and she had recently turned sixteen.
Corvis didn’t think it would be right to keep her in this town anymore and therefore needed Vale to escort her to the main city.
The main city, Mitdrel, was the biggest human settlement in the prison realm, and it was located in the middle of the prison realm. It had withstood hundreds of beasts surge and this one would be no different.
In return for being an escort, not only would Corvis give him the few mana stones he had left, but he would also give him the supplies required for the journey.
"Why can’t you take her there yourself," Vale asked, not completely trusting everything the old man said. He was clearly powerful enough to do it, so it was weird that he was placing his granddaughter’s safety in a random person’s hands.
"Dead men can’t move too far from their graves," he replied while arranging some glass cups. He always seemed to be doing one thing or the other behind the counter.
"This inn is my grave," he continued. "And if I go too far from it, I’ll lose myself."
Vale still didn’t understand what he meant by dead men, but whenever he asked for a more in-depth explanation, Corvis would always circumvent the topic.
After a while, he just decided to accept it.
Rein had a very unique ability—or disability depending on the viewpoint—and Corvis hadn’t gone into much detail, only saying that we shouldn’t mind her silence.
There was also something about how whenever she talked, she consumed mana.
Vale wasn’t too worried about that though. The job was to get her safely to the city, not to make small talk with her.
"Why me though?" Vale asked, still unsure about the deal.
The man had clearly proven to be void of ill intention, at least on the surface, but Vale was still curious as to why he had been chosen. Surely the man wasn’t some type of seer who could look into the future. Or maybe he was.
"The gospel said you were trustworthy, so I decided to trust you."
Vale wanted to ask what he meant by gospel, but something caught his eye in the next moment. It was the book Corvis had been reading when he got in.
It was old, with intricate carved into it. The words printed on the thick cover were clear and visible: The Gospel.
In an instant, Vale was able to make the correlation. The book was clearly some artefact that could predict events, or maybe see into the future.
Whether it was accurate or not, it wasn’t in Vale’s place to decide.
"I won’t force you to take the offer. But just know that without mana stones that girl will most likely die in a few days."
Once again, Vale was reminded of his predicament. If Roxy didn’t recover then he wouldn’t have a chance of getting out of this prison realm, and in her current state, she was a burden that could be used against him in a fight.
Under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t be inclined to take an escort job. Especially not in a foreign realm.
But right now, he had barely any other choice. He could certainly try to look for mana stones elsewhere, but who was to say he would find any?
In a place like this where the mana in the air was extremely thin, it would be hard to come across any mana stones.
Going to the city would also prove helpful as Vale didn’t want to get caught in the beast surge.
Since the city was a haven, his best bet was to head there.
"Okay, fine, I’ll take up your offer. Give me the stone."
"That’s more like it," Corvis said with a wide smile. "Let’s go back now, shall we?"
Vale nodded and with a simple clap of his hands, Corvis brought them back to the real world.
Vale’s world blurred as he tried to balance himself. Roxy was still on his back, grasping onto him like he was some holy sanctuary.
"So how did it go," Fallon asked with an expectant look.
Vale just nodded at him, signifying his cooperation.
"That’s brilliant. All that remains is for you to sign a contract."
Vale grimaced inwardly; he disliked signing contracts as the signer would always be at a disadvantage compared to the person who created the contract.
But [Binding Contract] was a skill that could only be used by tier two adepts.
Corvis then stretched his hands into the air and his mouth moved.
"Binding Contract." Immediately a scroll appeared in his hand.
Corvis had clearly prepared the contract beforehand. Who knew how long he had been waiting to use it?
"You can read through it." Corvis then handed the scroll to him.
Taking a look at the contract, Vale realised that it was a standard contract. Unlike maiden Samsara who had been able to form a contract with just verbal agreement, most people needed to actually write the details on a scroll or piece of paper for it to be recognised by the heavens.
This contract in particular was very long and after reading a bit, he grew tired and decided to just sign it.
After all Corvis and he had already agreed on the details, and neither of them had any reason to go back on their word.
"All you need to do is put a drop of your blood on the contract," Fallon explained.
Everyone had the same eager expression as they waited for him to do that. It ticked Vale off: they were a really weird bunch.
Still, he took out his dagger and made a small cut on his hand.
His blood slowly fell towards the contract and immediately they touched, the drop of blood was absorbed.

The blue interface before him was visible, but it was very clear that something was wrong. What he had expected to see was not what he was seeing.
