Chapter 1088: Blood Rising (4).

The procession was made up of four {Longhorn Mares}.

The {Longhorn Mares} were creatures with large crevices on their backs that could house a decent number of people. They had evolved that way to raise their going away from the dangers of the ground.

On their heads were enormous spiral horns that let out a soft glow in the shade of twilight. In some sense, they were beautiful creatures.

They were also semi-aquatic, and hand been found nesting in a tide pool at the far ends of the beach.

Thankfully, they were rather docile creatures so forming contracts with them was not too hard. They fed on a specific type of coral that only grew in thw tide pools. Fortunately, there was a terrifying abundance of this coral, meaning they were easy to maintain.

Still, even with four Longhorns, the number of people in the procession was not a very large number.

There were also a few of people ahead of the procession.

Cain’s expression didn’t change as he spoke clearly, his words drawing everyone’s attention,

"There is a fairly large horde of Devil Mutants up ahead."

Gilead raised a brow,

"So soon?"

Lukas snorted, "Just when I thought this ride would be uneventful."

Cain shrugged, "It’s already being handled."

Lukas raised a brow and glanced forward, his eyes narrowed.

With eyes that could peer far ahead, he could see, with utmost clarity, after concentrating a bit, the horde Cain had spoken of.

He could also see, the absolute death that was falling from the skies as the mages and marksmen released the opening salvo from the backs of the {Longhorn Mares}.

There were about a dozen mages and a dozen more marksmen. Despite that, the usual grin sky had turned into a festival of colors like the very heavens had opened up to deliver Divine judgement.

"Damn." Lukas exclaimed with wide eyes.

It was something else, seeing the combined might of so many powerful individuals.

The magic in the air seemed to boil as fire, hail, stones, arrows and bullets fell, turning the beasts below into black sludge on the ground.

However,.that was just the beginning.

One of the more prominent characteristics the Devil Mutants acquired, from what he had read, was the ability to procreate at incredible speeds.

This was why getting rid of them was rather difficult compared to regular mutant beasts.

A pool of dark mire right in front bubbled as even more of these creatures poured forward. They had long muscular limbs with a single large eye on their face and a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth.

Tehri eyes were wide and huge proportionate to their head.

One of them let out a terrifying shriek then opened its mouth. From the depths of its expanding trachea, red-hot flames surged.

With a blast, it spat the flames forward.

The ball of fire traveled in an arch, aimed at the forehead of the Longhorn as the head of the procession.

A barrier was erected right in time, completely blocking the attack.

However, the flames were like globs of sticky acid, sizzling against the barrier even after the collision.

Dozens more came arching through the air but wer promptly stopped as well even as more attack spells and projectiles rained down.

The beasts were not mindless, however, when they saw that there was no way to win, they quickly skuttled away, back into the depths of the pool of mire.

Lukas had a frown on his face,

"They retreated."

Gilead shrugged, "It’s better that way, no? It’s best we conserve our energy. Who knows from where and when the enemy could strike."

The {Longhorn Mares} moved fast, quickly strutting past the area.

As they walked on, Cain noticed that there were even more pools of the dark mire and smoldering miasma. Luckily for them, it mostly cling to the ground.

And for some reason, they were not attacked even after the last longhorn walked past the last pool of mire.

"That’s odd."

"Could they be part of a hive mind, much like the Devils?" Lukas said with a frown.

Cain shook his head,

"No. I doubt that’s it. But with ears like that, perhaps they have spread a warning to the rest of their kind."

Of course, that was just one type of Devil Mutant. With quite a bit more to their journey,n they were bound to encounter more, some of which would definitely be more aggressive than these ones.

’It is a shame that we can’t clear them out at the moment.’ Cain thought to himself.

Still, he wasn’t too bothered. From the show earlier, he had a feeling they wouldn’t be that hard to deal with.

With most of what was left of City Z being rubble, the large swathes of emptiness felt even more empty. There would be the occasional strange, twisted structure, but that was about it.

As they moved further, they encountered a few more groups of Devil Mutants.

Finally, after a few hours, it was time to take a break.

The {Longhorn Mares} were relatively fast. They also had a lot of endurance for long journeys. However, to keep them in optimal shape, it was best for them to take periodic breaks instead of making them sprint for long periods.

As the enormous beasts came to a halt, the rest of the procession came to a halt. The large group of humans and demi-humans were not all fighters.

A few of them were in charge of handling the logistics— feeding and caring for the mutant creatures, as well as handling a ton of other stuff like setting up camp and provisions for those that would be involved in the battle.

With loud bellows that traveled through the world, the four enormous beasts kneeled and hunched over into a resting position.

Now much closer to the ground, the humans could easily disembark from them.

Feet meeting the hard ground, Cain watched as the camp of humans slowly became alive.

In a few minutes, the entire camp would be properly set up with tents and guard posts.

He let himself relax for a moment...
