Chapter 42: Passive Skill [1]

"Heh," Roy let out a brief chuckle with a worried expression, "M-Master, sorry I didn’t hear you properly. Can you come again?"

Master Abraham stood quite a distance away from Roy in a wide area. This was the floor above where the APC was parked. Almost nothing but structural pillars spaced evenly and a ceiling made of similar concrete as everything else around them.

"You heard me right," Master Abraham said, holding a thin, long baton. "Try your best to kill me."

Roy held the netherstone dagger with both hands and his legs wide open.

"A... Are you sure?"

Master Abraham nodded slightly and put a hand behind his back, facing Roy vertically. His beautiful (fake) blonde hair blew with the calm breeze.

"As of this moment, I am an F-Class Executioner... who wants to kill you," he answered, his tone sounding nothing short of serious.

Roy took a large gulp.

The light blue short-sleeve shirt he had on blew slightly in the wind. On his lower body, he wore simple brown shorts and a black canvas pair that Donald had gotten for him, saying it had excellent mobility and durability in any form of combat.

Whereas Master Abraham had on a black long-sleeve shirt tucked into cargo pants of similar colour. He also had on the same footwear as Roy.

In this dying world of gates, abyss creatures, and systems, they were just regular people in the end.

Right then, Roy charged at Master Abraham and slashed repeatedly; however, the man just swerved from side to side, easily dodging the attacks.

Roy could feel the strength and speed behind his swings were way more than he was capable of a few days ago as a normal human, but then nothing he did came close to hitting Master Abraham.

"You slash instinctively and desperately. Observe and act," Master Abraham instructed.

"Easy for you to say! You have [Solve for X]!" Roy retorted, increasing the desperation in his movements.

"I’m not using any skill," Master Abraham said and struck Roy on the head with the baton.

Roy groaned in pain and grabbed his head, halting in his tracks.

"And you’re dead."

"Tsk. Let me use the pistol too, let’s see," he muttered with furrowed eyebrows.

But to his surprise, Master Abraham summoned his Array and threw the high-tech gun to Roy.

"Do note I will start striking harder."

Roy caught it, cleared his throat, and returned it. "I-I was just joking," he said.

"I thought so. Again."

Roy let out a battle cry and tried to stab Master Abe’s abdomen, but the latter deflected the dagger with his baton and smacked Roy in the face.

"Ah! You slapped me?" he voiced in shock, and angrily charged again.

This went on for over thirty minutes before Master Abraham said they should rest. Though by then, Roy already had sores all over his body and was just an ’Are you okay?’ away from bursting into tears.

Sitting down somewhere, he blew on a bruise on his elbow, caused by when he fell on his butt after Master Abraham pushed him.

Master Abraham walked closer and sat beside him.

"This was to be a fight to the death. Why didn’t you summon your abyss soul or use your skill?" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Roy glared at his mentor and tended to his injury.

"Your [2x Multiplier] skill should’ve been able to make you faster, strike harder, and more."

"It drains my energy just using it once." Roy then muttered, "How can I ever do that?"

Master Abraham gave him a long look. "You’re treating your passive skill like it’s an active one. No passive skill needs that much energy, most especially not your starting passive skill."

Roy shrugged. "Well, mine does."

Master Abraham let out a deep sigh.

"I wanted to assess your current fighting capabilities for myself, and I’ve deduced your biggest issue is following orders. You didn’t invest in your Physical stat when I told you to, did you?"

Roy opened his mouth to say something, but looked away, pouting.

"Every single point increase will always be evident when you fight. You kept on fighting despite not wanting to, meaning you put it in your Willpower instead."

Roy raised his head. "Master, you’re wasting your time being an executioner. You should work with the police as a detective."

"That was one of my side-jobs for the Association."

"Yeah, about that. Since Lady Sunfire saw you today, won’t they know you’re now back in the game?"

"They will. But they won’t come for me anymore," he said.

’This is my chance,’ Roy thought and quickly asked, "Master... why did you really stop signing in?"

Master Abraham fell silent once again and muttered, "Beware of..."

"What? Beware of?" Roy reflexively asked, but the C-Class Executioner already stood up.

"Get up. Use your skill. Let’s try something," he said and took Roy’s weapon.

Roy reluctantly got up and grumbled, "But you haven’t still told me—"

"Roy! Focus, and follow my instructions..." Master Abraham cut him off.

Roy shrugged and closed his eyes. ’Easy for you to say. I don’t have a mind-soul stat called Focus, remember? And what the hell is: Beware of? Beware of who or what, for God’s sake? Tsk. So annoying. Let’s just get this over with...’

He focused on the warm feeling in his chest and thought about the [2x Multiplier]. Unlike before, he had no weapon in his hands, so when he opened his eyes, the ethereal light flowed from his hands and settled on his palm.

"I’ve done it," he told Master Abe. "There’s a blue light in my palm. I don’t think you can see it, but that’s my skill."

"Good. But why your hands? Take it to your legs, instead," his master said in a soothing voice.

"Take it to my legs? There’s no way that’ll w—" Roy paused. He doubted, but still followed the instructions, and now the blue light flowed like electricity down his legs, and he felt his muscles bulge and tighten.

Bearing widened eyes, he quickly jumped slightly and performed a roundhouse kick!

Pa!

Master Abraham caught his leg with his left hand, but the gust from the kick blew his hair, a bit of shock evident on his face.

Roy retracted his leg and landed just as quickly as he jumped, then stared at his legs. He still felt the energy coursing through.

He raised his head to look at Master Abe, with immense shock and astonishment written all over his face.
