Giant Dragon Lord: Starting from Daily Intelligence-Chapter 161 - 155: The Mammoths Strike
Golden Wheat Castle.
On the castle walls, a guard dozing against a battlement was violently shoved awake by his companion, the force of it nearly sending him to the ground.
"Look!"
He rubbed his drowsy eyes and impatiently followed his companion’s trembling finger.
On the horizon, a serpent of yellow dust was roiling toward them, its silent, oppressive presence seeming to freeze the air itself.
At first, it was just a small dot, but the dust serpent swelled at a heart-stopping speed.
"Enemy attack!"
A sharp blast from a horn shattered the tranquility of Golden Wheat Castle. The tremor and cracked notes in the sound spoke more of the lookout’s terror than any words could.
The sleeping castle was startled awake.
More soldiers rushed onto the walls, bleary-eyed, fumbling with the straps on their Leather Armor and cursing the bastards who had shattered their pleasant dreams.
But when they saw what lay beneath the serpent of dust, all their curses died in their throats, replaced by sharp, horrified gasps.
This was no ordinary army.
Leading the torrent of Knights were ten behemoths, like moving hills, advancing with heavy steps that made the very earth groan under their weight.
Their massive tusks glinted with the cold light of metal, and their thick hides were covered in crude but effective Iron Armor.
"They’re... they’re Mammoth Giant Elephants..."
A young soldier’s teeth chattered, his grip on his Long Spear failing.
Fear spread across the walls like a plague.
"Hold the line! Everyone, hold the line!"
A powerful voice boomed across the walls.
A burly, middle-aged Knight in a full suit of Plate Armor strode onto the wall.
The pommel of the Long Sword at his waist was inlaid with a tiger’s eye, marking him as a Tier Two Great Knight.
He was the Guardian of Golden Wheat Castle, the Baron’s uncle, Knight Rogge.
Rogge forced himself to remain calm, his eyes locked on the approaching enemy army.
He saw the fluttering banners of the Thunder Dragon Duchy.
"It’s the army of the Thunder Dragon Duchy! What are they doing here?!"
’A storm raged in his heart. ’Wasn’t the natural barrier of the Nu River supposed to be impenetrable?’
But this was no time to dwell on such things.
"Archers, ready! Aim for the eyes of those beasts!"
Rogge drew his Long Sword and pointed it forward.
"For the glory of Golden Wheat!"
His roar steadied the panicked soldiers slightly, and they all drew their bows and nocked their arrows.
However, as they watched the Mammoth Giant Elephants advance like a moving fortress wall, their arms trembled uncontrollably.
At the head of the army, Raylo reined in Baofeng. The knights of the Moonlight Knight Order at his side were expressionless, as if what lay before them wasn’t a siege, but a routine hunt.
"Ready bows!"
Knight Rogge roared himself hoarse from the top of the wall.
"Loose!"
Hundreds of arrows flew toward the Mammoth Knights, letting out a dreadful shriek as they tore through the air.
However, the seemingly powerful attack proved to be pathetically weak.
CLINK! CLANK!
Most of the arrows were deflected by the Mammoths’ thick hides and Iron Armor. The few that managed to find their mark only pierced the skin, not even slowing the beasts for a moment.
An attack of this level was more like a minor annoyance.
One Mammoth Knight even yawned lazily and patted his mount on the neck.
"Hey, buddy, they’re just scratching an itch for you."
His companions roared with laughter, the sound carrying clearly to the walls, like a resounding slap across the faces of all the defenders.
Knight Rogge’s face turned a shade of deep crimson.
He knew that conventional methods were useless.
"Rolling stones! Hot oil! Drop everything you’ve got on them!"
But it was too late.
The ten Mammoth Giant Elephants had already charged to the base of the walls.
They ignored the gate, opting instead for the sections of wall on either side.
"Ram!"
A Mammoth Knight let out a furious roar.
BOOM!
The first Mammoth lowered its head and slammed its massive, iron-plated skull into the five-meter-high stone wall.
The entire castle shuddered. Rubble flew from the wall as a web of cracks spiderwebbed across its surface.
The soldiers on the wall lost their footing, stumbling and staggering. A few unlucky souls screamed as they plummeted to the ground below.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
It wasn’t a single impact, but ten Mammoth Giant Elephants ramming the wall one after another.
They were like ten massive Siege Hammers, destroying the defenses of Golden Wheat Castle in the most primitive and savage way possible.
Knight Rogge stared, his eyes wide with horror. He could clearly feel the wall beneath his feet Wailing as it disintegrated.
The sturdy defenses he had taken such pride in were as fragile as a cracker before these prehistoric Giant Beasts.
Raylo watched all of this with cold indifference, then raised his hand.
"Ed."
"Here!"
Personal Guard Captain Ed urged his horse forward.
He rode a warhorse, while his bonded Storm Griffin soared overhead.
"Once the wall is breached, you will lead the Moonlight Knight Order and mop up."
"Yes, My Lord!"
As soon as the words left Raylo’s mouth, a deafening crash resounded.
KRA-THOOM!
Under the tireless, repeated charges of the Mammoths, a nearly twenty-meter-long section of the wall finally reached its breaking point. Amidst a chorus of despairing shrieks, it collapsed with a deafening roar.
Dust and smoke filled the air, revealing a massive breach to everyone present.
ROAR!
Their task complete, the Mammoths let out a triumphant bellow and charged through the breach into the castle without a moment’s pause.
Their massive bodies rampaged through the narrow castle streets, knocking over houses as if they were made of paper. Soldiers who attempted to resist were trampled into paste beneath their feet.
In an instant, the castle was filled with a cacophony of cries, screams, and the sound of collapsing buildings.
"Moonlight Knight Order, charge with me!"
Ed raised his Long Sword high. Taking the lead, he led the Moonlight Knight Order through the breach like a silver torrent.
Unlike the Mammoths, they did not rampage wantonly. Instead, with a clear division of labor, they moved directly toward their objectives.
One contingent swiftly secured the walls on either side of the breach, clearing out the remaining Archers. Another made straight for the main keep. The rest broke into smaller squads to sweep the streets, eliminating any soldiers who still resisted.
Knight Rogge watched it all unfold, his heart turning to ash.
He knew it was over. From the enemy’s first appearance to the fall of the wall, not even ten minutes had passed.
This was a complete rout, a slaughter.
A Knight spotted him and spurred his horse into a charge, his Long Sword aimed straight for Rogge’s throat.
Rogge gave a wan smile. He was a Knight, and he would choose the manner of his own death.
With a furious roar, he raised his sword to meet the charge.
CLANG!
As their swords met, an immense force traveled up the enemy’s blade. Rogge’s hand went numb, and he nearly lost his grip on his Long Sword.
He realized with horror that this nameless Knight was in no way his inferior in strength!
And the enemy had hundreds more just like him.
Despair completely overwhelmed him.
The Knight gave him no second chance. The next sword strike was like a viper lunging from its hole—vicious and lethal.
