Chapter 117: The Dack Knights (2)
"So what if you’re from the Dack Knights?"
The bulky man scoffed, hopping into the air as he descended to the ground. With a powerful boom, the man landed before the carriage, coming to face the three men.
"This is my territory, and you boys haven’t paid your fees."
"You’re playing with forces you don’t understand, bandit." Henry growled. "No one touches the Dack Knights and lived to tell the tale."
"Is that right?" The man chuckled heartedly. "Then I guess I’ll be the first. Am I right, boy?!" He spread his arms out to his gang as they mocked and laughed at the three men.
"Alright, fellas." The laughter abruptly came to an end. "You know how these things go, right? You have stuff that we want and you want to keep your lives. So hand over whatever is in your possession.
"And don’t give me that crap about what is in the luggage section of your carriage." He looked over to the back of the carriage where a large chest lay. "We want the good stuff."
"Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but we don’t have anything," Henry replied with a smug smile. "We’re on our way to our base. If we don’t make it in time, the others will come looking for us."
"And your storage rings?" The man pressed, looking at their fingers. "I’m sure you have something useful."
Henry and Geoge looked at each other, silently communicating. They were being honest when they said they had nothing. What they told Leslie was all a sham to get the show on the road.
"Right."
The two slowly removed their storage rings, gesturing for Leslie to do the same. The rings were then tossed over to the man.
Promptly, one of his men stepped forward, collected the rings and checked their contents. Everyone waited for the verdict, but when the goon lifted his head to the boss, he shook his head.
"There’s nothing useful."
"What...?" The boss man snapped his head to his subordinate. "Give me that!" The man swiftly sent his senses inside, and just as he heard, there was nothing useful.
"Fucking hell!" Anger boiled in his heart. "There is nothing!"
Turning to look at the three men, the boss man gritted his teeth as he glared at the men. However, he soon got a hold of his emotions, his expression returning to the usual domineering look.
Henry and George suddenly felt unease creep into their hearts when they looked into the man’s eyes. Bandits were notorious for being ruthless when they didn’t get what they wanted.
"Look, pal. We don’t want any trouble." Henry tried to appease. "We’re on a mission of extreme significance. Our boss won’t be happy if we delay."
"Hah..." The man didn’t immediately reply, looking at his men. "There’s one thing I’ve learned in my many years on the job."
Naturally, they knew he was talking about banditry. But his words didn’t exactly make sense.
"Organizations like yours are either on a mission to eliminate someone or shipping something illegal." His words raised eyebrows as that was not news to people like them. "But whenever they have nothing on themselves, it means one of two things."
’No, it means we’re on a fake mission!’ George yelled inwardly. ’Tsk. If only they weren’t this many. Henry and I could take them. Running isn’t an option either.’
They were surrounded and had no way out. Well, there was, but that was basically throwing their lives away.
"Either they are serving as bait," The first caught the two men off guard, causing them to widen their eyes in shock. "Or they are disposable."
"Huh?" Leslie asked, looking over to Henry and George who had their furrowed cautiously. "What’s he talking about?"
Henry and Goerge didn’t like the fact that this man knew something like this. Clearly, he wasn’t simple. However, what surprised them more was the second point.
’Disposable, huh.’ Henry mused, looking at the surrounding men. ’Well, looking at our situation, he may be right.’
The Dack Knights knew this place was dangerous, yet this route was chosen anyway. The hope was that their targets could fall prey to the bandits, weakening them to a certain degree.
They knew the risk, but they didn’t think about it that way.
"Since you have nothing on yourselves," The man raised his left hand. "Don’t blame me for losing your pitiful lives. And don’t worry, when your friends come searching, we’ll treat them the same way."
The archers in the group drew their bows while the spell casters conjured their spells. What these bandits hated the most were people who came through without carrying anything of significance.
"Wait!" Henry yelled at the man. "There’s no need to go this far. We can work something out."
"Ooh, I thought I didn’t know who I was messing with." The man flashed a smug grin. "Also, we’re not idiots to let you guys go. We didn’t survive this long by being careless."
"Oh, goddess. We’re going to die!" Leslie began panicking, looking around desperately. "Do something!" freewebnøvel.coɱ
"Like what?!"
George growled with gritted teeth. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. Turning to the boss man, he yelled.
"You’re right! We are on a mission! Just not the usual kind."
George caught on to what his partner was doing, but there was no other choice. It was either their target or them. At least, they could create a situation that would give them a chance at escaping.
"We’re acting as bait for someone or should I say for two people." Henry said with a sigh. "The reason we used this route was so you guys could focus on them instead of us. It was a gamble, but like you said, we may be disposable."
The boss man furrowed his brows but wasn’t too surprised. He had already signalled some of his men to search the area to see if there was anyone else tailing the men.
"So your organization was hoping to use us like some grindstone to slow down your enemy." The boss man wasn’t born yesterday. "Whoever you’re baiting should not be easy to deal with."
For a moment, he thought about the Knight Commander, but they barely came to this section of the wilds. It was mostly shady men, those running from something or lost travellers.
"Who is it?" The man growled, finally releasing his aura.
The three men groaned as Leslie ended up on the ground while Henry and George struggled under the pressure. They feared the bandits for their numbers but did not expect their leader to be this powerful!
’We’re fucked if those two don’t do something!’
