Chapter 116: The Dack Knights (1)
The carriage hit the road in no time, taking several minutes to cross over from the daily travelled roads to the long and dangerous roads for long-distance travel.
"Where exactly is the new headquarters?" Leslie asked his fellow men. "And why are you guys changing?"
Once the three got to the carriage and hit the road, the two men who came for Leslie wasted no time changing out of their normal clothes into adventuring ones.
This was not particularly strange, but as members of an underground organization, blending in was their way of doing business.
"You ask too many questions, Leslie." Henry, one of the two men replied. "The way we dressed earlier was in order to bypass the gate guards. Also, we’re fighters and we need our protective gear."
"Yeah." George agreed with his partner. "We’re heading to a place not frequently travelled. Even we have to be careful of monsters and other groups who would want to get their hands on what we have."
"I see..." Leslie replied with a nod, turning to look outside the carriage.
The carriage was travelling past a steep mountainside, heading deeper into the forest and mountain range.
Leslie knew there was the possibility of monster attacks and even bandits; something that was pretty common.
Unfortunately for folks like them, they couldn’t use the teleportation hubs without paying a significant fee for the authorities to look the other way.
Aside from being hired hands for doing shady businesses, their organization was also involved in the illegal movement of goods and services, mostly for crooked nobles and merchants.
Turning to look at Henry and Goerge, Leslie frowned upon seeing their antsy nature, as if they were worried about something. A little bit of thought from Leslie and he was able to figure out what was on their mind.
"Are you guys still worried about those two people?" He asked cluelessly, making the other two men sigh. "As I mentioned earlier, they didn’t see me at all."
"Right..." Henry could only shake his head. ’Why do we even have a moron like this on our team?’ Naturally, he knew the reason. But knowing and accepting were two different things.
’His naïve nature makes it easy for anyone to deduce something is up with him.’ Henry thought. ’It’s what we’re counting on, and I hope those two are actually following.’
The only issue the two had was that they had no clue if their target was actually following them. Another issue was that, because they were using a carriage, it would be hard for them to keep up if they were weak.
But they were assured those two were not weak. Jetro – one of their strongest – was found dead. Killed by the catwoman after a bit of investigating.
’Despite this being our own plan, we’re at risk of running into danger ourselves. Using this route is like using a dual-sided blade.’ The man thought. ’We’re at risk of harming ourselves.’
The thought barely ended when the frightened cry of their carriage horses reached their ears. All three men nearly hurt themselves when the carriage came to an abrupt stop.
"Shit!" George cursed, quickly regaining his composure. "We’re being attacked!"
They didn’t have to see what was happening outside to know what it was. The whooshing sound of arrows came raining down on their carriage, and the desperate cry of their driver and horses reached their ears.
"Ah...! What’s happening?" Leslie got down, both hands over his head. "Is it those two people?!"
"No, dumbass!" Henry growled, getting his hand on his weapons. "We’re being ambushed by bandits or another group!"
"Huh?" Leslie opened his eyes and removed his hands as silence settled in the carriage. "Is it over?"
"Not by a long shot."
"Come out!" A loud shout came from the outside. "I know you’re in there! We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way!"
"Do you know who you’re messing with?!" Henry shot back. "You’re making the biggest mistake of your lives!"
"Hahaha...." The rowdy and deep voice came once more. "I’ve heard that one before. You only have yourselves to blame for travelling this route! Only those truly desperate and have something to hide use this path!
"So yes, we do know and we don’t care! Now, come out before we set that thing on fire!" freēwēbηovel.c૦m
"Tsk, we have no choice." George turned to his partner. "This could all fall apart."
"That is assuming they were following us." Henry replied as he and the others prepared to step out. "Don’t shoot, we’re coming out with both hands up!"
The carriage doors slowly opened and the first to step out was Leslie. The man was quivering in fear. However, he was part of the big boys now; stuff like this was their daily bread.
Leslie looked around and seeing the men surrounding them, he knew they were doomed. Standing on the sides of the mountain path and around the carriage were men armed to the teeth.
The driver and horses were already down, bleeding out on the ground. The sight was almost enough to make Leslie puke his gut out.
"P-please, don’t hurt me."
Leslie pleaded, tears streaming down his face. The man just realized he was way over his head, his heart filling with the regret of his bad choices.
"Come out!"
The voice of the leader echoed once more, causing Leslie to nearly jump out of his skin. He quickly looked up, where an extremely bulky fella stood with a huge battle axe over his shoulder.
The man had dark brown hair, a bushy beard and stood at an impressive height of 2 meters. Just staring at the bulky man made Leslie tremble even more. The aura he gave off was truly suffocating, to say the least.
"Fucking hell..." George cursed once more. "This was not part of the plan. We’re not even close to our destination and we had to come across these bandits."
"Hah, we have no choice." Henry sighed as he took out something from his storage before gesturing to his partner. "Let’s hope this works."
Under the bandits’ vigilant gazes, the two stepped out with both hands up. However, in Henry’s hand was a seal that identified their organization.
"The Dack Knights."
