Genesis Code: The Genetic Awakening-Chapter 115: Lead (2)
Chapter 115: Lead (2)
"Alright, I believe you." Caleb said, letting the man go.
The man scurried away to join his companions, but Caleb and Jess were no longer paying attention to the man.
Their senses were locked on the person who slipped away the moment they could push through the heavy pressure.
While the others did a similar thing, this person in particular moved with a destination in mind instead of just getting away.
"Let’s go,"
The two disappeared in a flash, leaving those who remained to gasp in shock. They had no intention of stopping their target and only wanted to follow his lead.
The suspect ran through the city at full speed, complimenting their movement with magic. Within 30 minutes, the suspect was almost out of the city.
"I don’t think our guy is in this city." Jess said, leaning her back into Caleb’s embrace. "They probably packed and left."
"Most likely," Caleb replied. "Leaving the city probably has a different reason."
The suspect suddenly took a turn and headed for a roll of houses on the outskirts of the city, quickly disappearing into one of the houses.
"I guess not. Let’s go."
........
Leslie had only one job; to stake out the old location for when that fella came around. As a new member of the group with no in-depth knowledge of operations, he was the perfect person for the job.
Who would have thought the person would be that scary?
When they first arrived, Leslie’s instinct was to run. However, seeing the others gathered around, he believed there was a chance they could take them down.
There was no way two people could take on several others at once, after all. And because he didn’t know much, he decided to stay behind and watch.
But then he felt that pressure fall on his shoulders and he nearly passed out. They didn’t even make a move, yet they were incapacitated!
Leslie could only think about finding a way out of there before those two changed their minds. When the chance presented itself for him to escape, he didn’t hesitate.
The plan was to reach home and call the boss to inform him of what he just witnessed. The house they rented out for him was made purposely to eliminate any connections he had with the underworld.
But the scare he received drove all common sense out the window. He didn’t follow the plan set out to lose them in the event they were tailing him. Leslie could only think about the safety of his home.
"Fucking hell." Leslie cursed as he shut the door behind him, his chest rising and falling. "They never said they would be monsters."
A shiver ran down his spine just recalling the sight of the man helplessly caught that man’s grip. Leslie moved towards the bedroom, where he kept the communication artefact.
Leaving it on himself would have made it easier for those guys to get it if they caught him, something he was glad he was able to avoid.
"James, this is Leslie." The man quickly called out the moment the communicator went through. "The boss was right. That man did show up, and he came with that woman."
"Where are you right now?" The voice from the other end asked. "Were you followed?"
"Of course not." Leslie shook his head. "They don’t even know I was there."
"Hm, we’ll see about that. In any case, what happened?"
"Nothing in particular, James." Leslie went ahead and explained the situation. "Th-then, they left after. Hehe."
Leslie made sure to tweak the story just a bit in order to avoid being punished.
"You did well, Leslie." James said after a couple of seconds. "We’ve now confirmed they’re indeed after the organization. Hang in tight, I’ll send some people to come for you."
"Yes." Leslie swallowed nervously. "What are you going to do about those two anyway?"
"Don’t worry, we have a plan for them. Just stay low until they come to get you."
"I hear you."
The call came to an end as Leslie sighed and fell back on his bed.
"That went well. It should be enough to prove my will to join the organization." Leslie murmured hopefully. "If only they told me where they went, I would have gone there myself."
Leslie closed his eyes, deciding to rest to get his nerves down. A soft smile graced his average features as he daydreamed about his new life as part of the organization.
"A day or two shouldn’t be a problem."
....
"He’s bait."
Caleb said with certainty. He and Jess overhead the entire conversation through their senses.
"Mm, I agree." Jess nodded. "They know this Leslie fella is a loose end, and they expected him to be followed. Whoever that person or persons are, they would most likely be leading us to a trap or something."
"Yep." Caleb found the entire situation funny. "I wonder what they have in store for us."
True to their prediction, two men appeared at the entrance of the house two days later. They appeared like clueless citizens on the surface, but Caleb and Jess could see the caution they had around themselves.
"Leslie?" One of the men knocked. "We’re here. It’s time to leave."
His voice was deliberately loud, catching the attention of the few people around. However, the people paid the bare minimum of attention before getting back to their daily activities.
"Oh, right!" A response came from the house. "Give me a few minutes to take a few things!"
"You guys sure came fast." Leslie appeared a few minutes later with a beaming smile. "I’m ready. Let’s go."
The men looked around once more before leaving for the city gates, hoping they were being followed.
"Eh, are we going to go on foot or is there a carriage waiting outside the gates," Leslie asked a few minutes later, wondering where the horses were.
"Don’t ask questions like that." A sudden slap echoed from the back of Leslie’s head, making the man yelp. "You should know the kind of things we do. Bringing the carriage into the city is asking for trouble. There are some deliveries we have to do on our way back."
"Oh, okay."
High above the buildings and out of sight were Caleb and Jess, who listened in on the little show. A second later, they both disappeared in a flicker of mana.
